Title: straight pipes and pod filters
Post by: glukasil on July 16, 2014, 08:15:25 AM
Hi guys. I bought an unfinished project 96 fj1200 which has 4 straight pipes..... and some cheap looking empty pod filters....
Question 1 , what is easiest way to muffle the sound without welding anything to the pipes...
Question 2 , do I have to adjust carbs ?

Thanks a lot..

Bolt on one of the available exhaust systems, or find some stock exhaust.

Hey, you said "easy" and "without welding", you didn't say "cheap"...

To be able to give better advice, a photo or two would be great.

If the down pipes end near the center of the motor, you may be able to get a stock/motad collector and mufflers.

Measure the inside diameter of the straight pipes, then the length, then find 4 steel baffle cores you can slide in the pipes, drill the pipes for the attachment thru bolts and call it a day. Some baffle cores are longer (quieter) some are shorter (louder)
Harley guys do this all the time...

Baffle cores is perfect. I forgot to mention,  the bike is a street fighter unfinished project i bought. Stock pipes were replaced with just pipes going under the bike. No place for exhaust.
So next question. I ve seen some fiberglass cloth to baffle exhausts...can i combine both solutions? I dont want to be too loud.
Thanks a lot

This is what i made for my 4 into 1 and i wrapped proper muffler padding around ouside and wrapped wire over the top to keep it from bunching. I loved the look but i lost a bit of bottom end and midrange power, so i changed it back to bought muffler.

May be it is because you connected all four pipes into one....i have 4 separate pipes......

Not sure! It wasn't a huge difference but noticeable.

Good luck...
