Title: Gas mileage poll
Post by: Paul1965 on July 05, 2014, 07:08:36 PM
I'm just curious what kind of mileage other FJ riders are getting. I was getting 45+ until I added my mods (Uni Pods, Yoshi 4 into 1 and carbs) and now my mileage has dropped off more than I would have thought.

My gas mileage is usually in the 43-45 mpg range. I have the 18/38 tooth sprocket set up. Last year on my trip to Gunnison, CO. I had 2 legs that came in with 53 mpg. Granted I was traveling on the highway and a dozen or so small towns with speeds down to 35mph for short distances.

The Central FJ Rally is less than 2 weeks away. The mileage from my house to The Hub, is 361.48 miles. I am going to attempt to go 300 miles on a tank of fuel.

My math says 53 mpg can make it. 300 miles, 5.8 gallons = 51.72 mpg required.

I will keep everyone posted on whether I am successful or how many miles I did make, before I failed.

Fred

I feel your pain... still trying to work my way through it.    :sorry:

Used to get 43-44, dropped about 10 after the airboxectomy, but I've got it back to 38 now.

Mine had initially dropped to 30 mpg. I played around with the jetting, swapping in 112.5 mains and 37.5 pilots and dropping the needles one notch. Today I took a trip to Sublette IL where I managed to get 38 mpg. I guess that isn't too bad since it was quite a bit of stop and go on the back roads and also included blast down I39 at 75 mph into the wind, but I want to do better than that. Maybe I need to look into changing gears next, especially since I keep trying to shift into 6th

Hmmmm, miles, gallons...?
Ok, I know a mile is 1.6km (1600 meters) but how much is a gallon?
School was a long time ago, but I think a US gallon is 3.78 litres, and a UK gallon is something like 4.54.
So, if I recall correctly the 1200 had a 22 litre tank (I think 2l is the reserve) which makes total capacity of about 5.8 US and 4.8 UK gallons.

Now if we assume my conversions are correct then the rest is easy.
First, I cant recall what the bikes sprocket sizes or jetting were/was but I am almost certain all of my FJs were factory.

On a normal trip I would comfortably get between 350 and 400km (220-250 miles) on a tank (generally consuming about 19 litres).
However when the pace went up (a lot) I recall figures of 18L for around 200km.
Therefore; at around 19 litres of use my mileage would be around 220-250 miles from 5US (4.2UK) Gallons or 44-50mpg US (48-55mpg UK).
The worst (or perhaps best) I saw was about 33mpg US (28mpg UK). :-)

42mpg with UNI filter in the stock air box and Yosh slip-ons and 18/38 gearing.

Fred, I hope you're bringing a can with a gallon of gas, just in case.  Rumor has it a 550lb FJ is a pretty tough to push for more than a mile or 2

bring a gas can with you or you will wear out the soles of your boots from pushing the heavy beast.

Fred had this plan before the accident. Yes he planning on bringing along a fuel can or two.

I think he shuts off the bike and coasts down hills. Hooks a rubber bungee to trucks for the up hills. Lets not talk about his low drag plan.

When my 86' was bone stock I could get 50MPG. Now with UNI's, Suppertrap slip-ons and proper jetting I get 42 to 46, 38 ish if I am following an aggressive rider.

18 front 41 rear. Best mileage to date is 49.9 mpg. I was following a guy on a cruiser and almost fell asleep. I hope my mileage never is that good again. Average is around 40-43. I will not take any slabs unless it is impossible not to.

I do 95% town riding, under 45 mph or so. I think I'm getting around 35-36.
WAAAYYY better than the 11 my Dodge Ram 5.9 gas gets!!
And more fun too.

When the time is right, can I ask you for a tutorial on increasing my performance with said upgrades?
I'm not ready now, bike runs good and I'm busy with school, but afterwards I would like to upgrade.

The mileage on my '92 FJ1314 varies between 35 and 43 mpg (US). There seems to be a correlation between the twist of the right wrist and the fuel gauge. Not much difference between this FJ and the '86 FJ1200 that I had from '94 to '05. The best range (calculated) that I ever got to a tank was just over 250 miles (400 km).

Mileage on my '84 with RPM's 1350cc engine, UniPods, 42.5 pilots, 122.5 mains, needles up 1 notch, 5 degree ignition advance with 18/40 gearing is ~33 on the low side to 36mpg on the freeway.

With 40 pilots and 117.5 mains I got as high as 41mpg, but the engine was not happy......I like happy.

Mileage on my '92 with DynoJet stage 3, UniPods and Kerker 4 into 1, 5 degree ignition advance, 18/40 gearing is ~42 mpg all day long.

My '88 with stock everything except slip ons and jetting adjustment ran in the low 40s ( US), rising to high 40s as the engine got older and looser just before it started eating oil at the 120 thou mile mark then steadily got worse till I replaced it.

The 92 with stock everything was around the low 40s the whole time I had it.

The engine was such a torque monster stock or near stock I wondered why anyone would want to mess with it. Then I rode Arnies. Yeah it was worth it.

I get about 40 under normal, town, and aggressive riding conditions.  I've seen as much as 59 a couple of times.  This is at 60mph ~3500rpm  for over 100 miles or so.  I also only weigh 135lbs, I'm sure that has something to do with it.  I've got a Dyna 2000 ignition and Supertrapp exhaust.

Don't think its you.  I have a Cagiva Navigator with the TL1000 engine and it doesn't match the FJ for mileage.
As a matter of fact, neither does my Aprilia Shiver and that's only a 750cc V-twin.  FJ's hard to beat.

Same engine, 39mm FCRs, 18/41 and I get ~31mpg in daily use as a commuter ranging to ~36mpg at ~6000ft elevation riding in the Sierras last week.  This was also my first >4,000ft elevation run since the dyno tune of the FCRs and the bike ran great up to ~7,500ft on the passes.

Touching on another point that has been discussed here...  my FCRs were tuned at sea level effectively and ~75F.  I've run them in ~45F at sea level to >100F at 7,500ft with mild performance impacts (richer cold, leaner hot and high altitude, but no knocking or anything destructive).  I don't believe these carbs on an FJ are nearly as finicky as one might think...

There are no hills in Kansas to coast down.  :blum1: Bungee cords to a truck is an idea though.. :dance2: For the low drag plan, I could spray the bike with a good coating of Pledge furniture polish.  :good:

I really do not think about gas mileage. Ridding Sunday, three quarters throttle, 7,000 rpm plus, going up the canyon. What was I thinking? The guy on the R1, not fast in the turns but when he goes full throttle down the straight, that bike is fast. I just got out horsepowered. Man I need EFI. That will also fix the fuel mileage.

I have gotten a low of 35 mpg (US) back in '03 and '04. The past couple of years I routinely get 48-54 mpg. I stay off the highways and ride very sedately. It's a cop magnet to begin with and I got old. It's basically stock tune with a Uni air filter and stock gearing. I have a slow bike to ride fast, my XS650 and the '89 I like to ride slow. The Venture is for long rides.
