91 fj12. givi hard saddle bags mounted to a custom built rack. worked fantastic since i purchased the bike w them on it 3 months ago. this weekend while riding home on a smooth backcountry road at 120km/h i hear a sound and look in my mirror. there i see my left side bag sliding down the pave behind me. toppling a few times and sliding a long way.
when i went back to pick it up it was not broken but seriously road rashed.
looked it over and nothing was mechanically wrong w it.
snapped it back on the rack and it held strong. course on the way home i was expecting it to fall off again.
anyone safety tying theirs on? I'm all nervous about it now.
I'll lube and inspect the locking/securing mechanism on mine.
Thanks for the heads up. Sorry about the damage. :empathy:

Many years ago I had a bag fall off a BMW. Put it back on. I know how you feel... Mine never came off again but I inspected my latching system a lot more often and always locked mine on.

I came across a top box one day that fell off an fjr1300, it was a factory fitted item that came off after he went over a rough bit of dirt on the shoulder of the road. It went back on the bike ok, but I noticed when locked back on how much movement it had. he reckons their all like that, and in my opinion a bad design for a big tourer like that.
I had one of my K2s come off once.. I cleaned the latches...
Had the top box unclasp the mount and the latch was all that saved it..
Cheers.

This is a known problem on the FJR and has been addressed via a factory recall.
i emailed Givi service...haven't heard boo yet though. doubt i will.
:hi: I have a set of Krauser bags, (top and sides), on my '85...and I have a safety strap around both side bags, just as extra insurance :good2:

hey Tiger, yup...thats my next step is to put a quick release safety leash on them somehow. the givis are smooth and slick so it might be a bit of a challenge. i also added some duct tape to the bottom attachment points on the mounting hardware. this 'tightened' up the whole unit and took some play out of it. so that's a stop gap but if it works i'll add more permanent rubber of some kind at the bottom point.
well the tape really firmed things up. there was a slight up/down/in/out bit of play..that seems gone now w just the tape. another few rides and i'll upgrade the tape to something less ad-hoc.
