Two quick questions:
1. Are the '85 brake and clutch master cyl identical in specs to the later model 1200's.
2. When did Yamaha correct the 2nd gear problem. Any change during '85 production?
Thanks, Rick

As far as I'm concerned, my '89
still had the problem. New shift forks and an undercut transmission are the only 'real' fix.

The clutch master cylinder internals are not interchangable. I believe the brake master cylinder internals are.

Thanks Fred, I saw on Randy's web site that the internals are different. I was wondering if the reservoir, top and gasket are interchangeable, my sight glasses are toast as the bike sat for 10 years, and I've seen separate replacement parts and was wondering if they could be combined to make a working unit. Some of these were from a '91 mine is an '85.

The front brake master cylinder, all internals, sight glass, and cover are the same for the 1100 and 1200.
The Clutch master cylinder for the 1100 is model specific and does not interchange with any other Yamaha.

Maybe the internals are different, but if you're looking to use/swap a '86-'87 FJ1200 clutch hand master cylinder on a '84-'85 FJ1100 you'll be okay.
The only outward difference that I see between the two FJ's I have, is that there is a plastic plug stuck in the internal threads for the mirror (where they are mounted on '84 - '85) on the 87's clutch hand master cylinder. Can't speak for later ('88 onward) FJ1200's though.
I think the main problem is there are no more rebuild kits for the first gen clutch master cylinder? Is this correct?
I was looking at old parts the other day (why I didn't throw away parts from a rebuild 15 years ago is beyond me). But, from my observations (without doing any detailed measurements), the clutch master piston and seals look a lot like the front brake master piston and seals. I'll try to get another look, but it MIGHT be possible to use a front brake m/c rebuild kit on the older model clutch master.

No, they're still available.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out.
