Title: Cager Rear Ended Me Today.
Post by: aviationfred on June 19, 2014, 08:49:49 PM
I guess the falling down do do others iscontagious. I was on my way to the post officeer work this afternoon and stopped in t he street due to an emergency vehicle approaching . Then screeching tires and WHAM I am doing a Superman impression. I was wearing my black mesh and leather jack and had enough sense to Tuck and Roll. The armor in the elbow and shoulder took the brunt of the impact and I rolled right up onto my feet, pissed off and already screaming what a dumb ass the cager was as he exited his truck. I came away unscathed but my old faithful did not. Over all pretty minor damage. Most disturbing is the rash on the Lockhart Phillips FJ1100 lowers and the destruction of my RPM/German homogulated clear LED tail light. My pc internet is down this evening. I will post photos in the morning.

Sorry to hear that Fred. Good that you got away unhurt. Being rear ended is also my biggest worry.  Dave

Wow Fred, I guess you've had a touch of it too!  Glad you're OK.  Good idea with the tuck 'n roll!  Bummer about the FJ.  I sure hope the cager had insurance.

sorry to hear. Thats my biggest fear. Getting rear ended. Stupid moron cagers just dont pay attention anymore and it seems to be getting worse daily. Countess times now I have thought about giving up the ghost and selling fj and just sticking to dirt/adventure only. Sucks cause I am also addicted to the FJ too.

Glad you are OK Fred. The bike is just stuff and fixable.  I have a friend who was in Salt Lake at a stop light with an SUV stopped in the lane next to him, a semi truck rear ended the SUV scared the shit out of my friend.  Killed the SUV driver.  All the crap flew around my friend and was unscathed but his comment about the event has always stayed with me  "damn, if a truck can't see a f***en SUV in front of him what chance do I have....".

I found myself using those rear view mirrors a lot more after that. Rule 1 might be don't fall down,  but rule 2 has to be stay away from vehicles , assume everyone is out there to kill you and rules of the road, stop signs and lights are just someones opinion...

Get well soon Fred.  :drinks:  What is it that the Marines say "Pain is fear leaving your body" ?

Crap!  Glad you made it out OK!  Still may want to go to the doctor tomorrow and make. Sure there aren't any injuries that adrenaline helps to hide

I have a collection of motorcycle crash videos...just trying to learn from them...HALF are rear-enders from car drivers not paying attention!  :shok: Glad you're okay Fred!!!

Glad your ok, I got rear ended in January and didn't feel to bad at the time but it ended up taking 3 months before i was 100%.
I'd get to the doctors and get checked out,  Even if it's just for the record.    Some injuries may not show for awhile. Like your neck.  Good luck.

Very glad to hear that your OK.  Getting rear ended is definitely one of my nightmare scenarios, as I've heard of too many resulting in catastrophic endings for many of the riders involved.

Not the lowers man!! Well done on post accident restraint and not punching said driver in the face.
Good to hear you're alright - that's the most important - even when considering the special fj bits and pieces.

Here are some photos I took at the crash scene. I was hit hard enough to tear the trunk mounting plate off of the main luggage frame. Over all I escaped major damage to myself and the FJ. :yahoo: :dance2:

Next is to get a repair estimate and have a check written. :mail1:

So glad you are still here to talk about this Fred. It could easily have gone a different way.
Cryin shame to see your FJ like that, you have put in a lot of effort getting it the way you like it.
Looks like you have a new project. Will you do anything different or keep it as it was?

That sucks Fred.  Glad that you're OK.  I was just pulling into work 10 minutes ago, at a complete stop, turing left, waiting for traffic to break and hoping the oncoming traffic behind me at 45mph was seeing my blinker and were not going pile into me ---then feeling that sense of relief when they casually veered around me. Then I read this.  Some things are almost beyond our control.

Again, glad you're OK.  It's a shame to see your bike laying on it's side too.

No worries about a spare. The trusty Silver Bullet is still operational. The FJ was on it's side for mayber 15 minutes, (first time on it's side since I have owned it). Picked it back up onto the tires and my baby fired right up without even a hiccup. Rode it over to the Churches Chicken parking lot to do the mandatory Police report. 30 minutes later the Silver Bullet carried me home. I have an estimate scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

Yeah, that's a REAL BITCH about those CUSTOM PAINTED $2,500.00 Lockhart Lowers, eh?

How's your NECK? Any BACK PAINS???

Are you now TERRIFIED OF CARS???

As an aside, a local (unnamed) personal injury attorney uses the following catchphrase: "For the people" and I vocally add "...'s money" every time I hear it!

Sorry about the accident Fred but I'm glad you are ok....sort of....soft tissue and/or back and neck injuries take time to show up...Steve's point is spot on.
The damage to your bike is obvious...that's easy to fix...but any latent damage to your vertebra can, and will, show up years from now.

Get checked out. Assume nothing.

That being said, I hate attorneys, but.......

Ouch!!!  Is the insurance going to want to total the bike?  I think I'd settle for less (if I had to) to avoid the salvage title.

Right now the odds are in my favor. The vehicle that hit me was company owned and the company is self-insured. (No insurance adjuster or professional agent) I think they will be happy to write me a check and sign away my right for later medical compensation
I do have a Doctor appt. Scheduled for Monday as a precaution.

No worries on the salvage title, it already has a salvage title.

$1300.00 of the estimate came from damage to the saddle bags, top box and luggage frame. All of which I had added onto my insurance policy.

I think we all fear what might happen when stuck in a vulnerable spot like you were. I have made it my practice to blink my brake light on and off when in that position. 40 years and counting,,,so far, so good.

I have LED brake light globes and a brake light modulator. It makes the brake light flash rapidly and is adjustable for rate and duration. Very eye catching.

Mostly though I do my best to avoid putting myself anywhere that I could be rear ended.

For example, if I can't complete a turn into a side street without stopping, I will not sit in the centre of the road waiting for a gap while cars are passing within a metre in both directions. If I can't make the turn without stopping I will overshoot it, take the next turn or do a u turn as soon as I can. If making a turn on a country road at highway speeds, I pull off to the side until there is no traffic, no way am I going to be stationary on my bike with vehicles around me doing 100kph. Get hit doing that and there would be no accident report, just an obituary.
Once you have propped in the middle of the road you have no control over your destiny, it is entirely in the hands of the passing motorists.

I dis-assembled the rear of the bike to do some in depth sub-frame inspection, I found a few bent tabs where the luggage frame attacked. Other than that everything looks well. I will concede that the whole sub-frame may be tweaked to the left a hair.

Offer to settle for $1950 w/o the "total" so you can avoid the salvage title. It might help if you get tagged by another cager.

In Iowa, if you buy back, the title stays in your name, and therefore is not branded.
I totaled a car due to a deer hit several years ago, and when I traded it (after repairing it myself), as far as the dealer knew, that all it was , was a high mileage used car.

My FJ came with a salvage title when I purchased it. In Kansas a salvage title does not effect registration or getting a title transferred. So there will be no change...
