So after riding my fj1100 around for 3 months and being totally happy with stock suspension, i was wondering why everyone hates it so much so i decided to measure sag and here are my results. This is with a full tank and measured with weight totally off the wheels and then with me sitting on it.
Front had 30 mm of travel which is at the upper limit but still normal range, with thicker fork oil, highest setting and no antidive.
Rear had 15 mm which is too stiff, normal is 20 -25mm
So with all the weight that i have removed from the bike the suspension for me is more then adequate. So looks like i can save some dough for the time being.
Errrr I would not publish my sag numbers..... not good..... :empathy:
My suspension seems ok too. I was cornering at a good speed the other day and as I was into it I hit heavy bumps. I felt a slight loss of control and thought to myself. That could be the reason. My setups ok for me. If I had the money to do the big mods. I'd rather spend the money on a older ZX11.

Yeah, i got the fj for free so im not complaining but I'm glad I've got it now, can make it into anything (within reason) i want. Ill keep on changing one or two things at a time and see what makes the biggest changes. I used to ride a zx9r and i think my fj handles better, even with the skinny bias ply tires. Radials are the next mod for sure, avon azaro.
Removing the stock pegs and installing adjustable rearsets helps heaps when cornering as now i can go as low as my ability will let me.
You can easily get the recommended sag numbers with the stock suspension.
But you typically end up with too much preload and a harsh ride. Sag is not the only important suspension parameter. The damping performance of the stock forks and shock are woefully lacking.
Each to their own, I'm not finding that at all at the moment, my bike is 30kg lighter then stock though.
