Title: Tank Bag lock
Post by: Earl Svorks on June 03, 2014, 06:38:02 PM
  Hi all,
while browsing this section, I came across the tankbag topic. Like some others, I have been an advocate of this type of on board carry all for a very long time. My only issue was that every mount type I ever used eventually would leave it's mark in your paint job. A couple of years back, I heard of the idea of mounting to the fuel tank cap base. I don't know that this
was available from catalog at that time, I hadn't ever seen it. I made my own. This was fitted to a specific bag but nearly any bag can be used as I built an aluminum platform, attached to a machined receiver (made from a side bearing carrier from a Honda shaft final drive gear case) The male bit began life as an oil filter base. Lots of time went into this, I finished it to a 1 degree taper, I integrated a pair of spring loaded sliding lock pins into the receiver,  (which I do not seem to need
as the taper holds very firmly) It's been in use for several seasons without any problem. I am posting some pictures of the build process. There are some pix of the radar detector mount and the rear backrest, both of which I built(//)

Hi Mr Sabre,
I wanted a backrest that would give enough support for the ,,, guest without it looking like it came off
someone's chopper. As usual, there was not much available to fit the bill. What you see there (I'll find more pix)
I made from  .125" aluminum sheet stock. It's 2 halves, mirror image of each other which I cut out with my band saw.
I then bent them into the desired shape then TIGged them together at the top. The pad came from some busted up
backrest/rack that I had in the corner. The hardware that holds it onto the tail section passes through a steel rib inside
on the front bit, I had to put some backing behind the rear bolts at the other end. It's strong and solid , I have two tail sections so I can just flip the one on or off, rather than remove the back rest and have a bunch of holes visible.
I also built a detachable support for the saddlebags ,, I'll put up some pix,,,
