Title: Parts yards are exasperating...
Post by: JPaganel on June 03, 2014, 12:51:15 PM
So, my fork sprung a leak. I figured this would be a perfect opportunity to switch to a post-89 fork. There is only one on ebay now, and it's a little spendy, so I called up our local yard. They have no idea what they have in inventory, so their typical deal is "we'll call you back in a couple of days". A week later - nothing. Call them back, they say they came up empty.  I went to one of these sites where you put in a request and it gets sent out to a bunch of boneyards.

So far I got four responses. One wants $400 for the set. Another wants $225 per leg, left or right. Must be that special platinum edition...  The other two were all like "I see you are looking for an 89 and up, I got this set from an 86..." It's like they can't read, or something...

It seems there isn't such a thing as a bike parts yard that is in any way shape or form organized. The self-service car yards at least know which models and years they have in stock, even if they can't tell you the part you are looking for is there or not. These guys don't know a damn thing. Having a simple Excel spreadsheet to record stuff they take in might be a huge improvement, but they aren't nearly that advanced...
