Question:
2015 WC Sierra Rally, is $89 per night too expensive?

Hey folks, here is what I have found out on the Coleville KOA, which is the *suggested* base camp for our WC Sierra Rally next year....
1) the KOA is set up for RV's only...no cabins.
2) in the resort is a lodge called the Meadow Cliff which has rooms available. Some rooms have kitchens, some are single king and some are double queen.
3) the resort has outdoor fire pit, BBQ provisions, and pavilion for our use...along with a pool.
4) the resort has a nice restaurant on site open for breakfast and lunch...no dinner.
http://www.meadowcliff.com/ (http://www.meadowcliff.com/)
Here's where I need your input before I secure a block of 15 rooms...
The group price is $89 per night (plus 12% tax) for double occupancy....normal price is $99 per night.
I know some of us are on a budget....is this too expensive?
Please vote, so I know which way to go...
I will not be attending next years WCR, but I will give a thought. Roughly $20.00 more a night than Willits KOA. Breakfast and Lunch on site, a real bed with linens, your own indoor plumbing and shower......with heating and air conditioning if needed. I would say that $90.00 a night is well worth the great time that is to be had. :yahoo: :drinks:

I'm already planning and budgeting for next year's rally.
I wonder if I can get that fine stripper with the nice can to meet me there?
BTW, Pat, I forgot to return your California map. I'll return it to you next rally.

WC Sierra Rally next year....
I voted and the expense is OK, but I'm an outlier on the location... The rally location we're overlooking is central coast down SLO way. More temperate and, assuming next year is a wet one as predicted, less likely to have another Hayfork experience. Just putting it out there to support Tim's earlier request that we consider that location... He and Cap'n Ron would likely make excellent tour guides.
I'm also spoiled in that we pretty routinely enjoy the Sierra passes with the Audi club... nice, but big variations in weather and generally colder early summers are the norm up there. Might be a better location for an expanded Renegade Rally in Sept?

Pat,
On you way home did you ride any of the Sierra passes or go by the KOA... if so how was the weather?

On my way home Monday, I stopped at Donner Lake on I-80. The weather was crystal clear and about 68* according to my trucks mirror temp guage.
Fred
Wasn't the Petaluma KOA around $120/night for a Cabin?
Real beds, and a fire pit... sounds good to me.. :)
Mike, the weather is definitely 'variable' in that location. Some years ago, we camped in June Lake, maybe 100 miles south of Topaz. It SNOWED on us on June 30th! Later that day it was in the upper 60's and 3 days later we were overheating and had to leave (tenting). So as they say, if you don't like the weather, wait an hour. It'll change!
Pat, the MeadowCliff Lodge is becoming the KOA. Check this out. I suspect we'll end up at the KOA anyway.

I voted and am OK with it. It is actually about the same as going to Willits as it shaves 450 miles off the round trip for me. Because the weather can be anything it would be nice to have a comfortable place to stay. Got a year to hold a sign up on the street corner begging for money  .

Same place. The KOA is now open, but as I said, with provisions for RV's only...no cabins
Mike, the Weather was primo.
I voted, I'm OK with it.
Rolled in from WCR mid day today, had a blast. Thanks to all you left coasters for putting on a great rally and making this flatlander feel at home.
Well done.
Scott
I voted I'm ok with $90 a night. If this ends up back to back with the central rally. I'm going to take my 1 month sabbatical. And go to both. :good:
Price is good, we'll go anywhere! :i_am_so_happy:
Yeah...what he said! :good2:
all good , price is right. :good2:
Ok, thanks folks...
I just blocked 17 rooms for us (via credit card)...arrival: Thursday 5/28 2015 departure: Sunday 5/31 2015
For folks who want to come in early, no problem...I think I'll arrive on Tuesday to prerun Monitor and Sonora Pass.
It was necessary to block those rooms now, because the MeadowCliff fills up with other groups quite early.
We will hold these rooms for the FJ Owners group until May 8th 2015 at which such time they will be released so my credit card won't be charged.
I will be sure to post many reminders next year on the need for confirming these reservations
Oh, this is gonna be fun...if the weather gods cooperate.

So, if we have another WCR like this year were there are 38 people in attendance, is this going to be big enough?
If some of the rooms are single king beds that does not allow for multiple people sharing a room.
Is there other lodging in the area?
That will suck having people at two different places...
Randy - RPM
Okay, so I just booked my room for my wife and I. There are now a total of 5 single bed rooms left, which I am sure Frank & Diane, as well as Derek and Donna will require one each. Plus there was rumor that Craig might bring Dawn again and Andy might bring Jen to the next one, so that leaves just one single bed room. Not sure if Ed is going to bring the trailer again but if not, that would cover the final single bed room for couples. Baldy had mentioned plans on bringing his girlfriend, what about Marsh & Klav and their significant others?
So, if anyone else has plans on bringing their significant other, they need to grab up a room or they are going to have to share with others.
So, that leaves 11 rooms with two beds. Those rooms are double occupancy at the $89 plus the additional 12% rate and if more than two stay in a room the price goes up.
I believe she told me the rooms with two beds are queen size beds.
Randy - RPM
I just revised the reservations...I got the entire 20 room complex...all they had....other lodgings are 8 miles south in Walker or 3 miles north in Topaz.
Of course folks who bring their portable homes...like Ed, can stay in the RV section.
Made my reservation for a single.
We're in, booked a single room (one queen), kings are all gone, some rooms left with double queens for sharing. We're coming in a day early again, Wednesday May 27th. Can't wait! :yahoo:
Derek
looks like our routes will be pretty much easy to plan as all the roads lead east and circle around -- I don't see any short routes which is ok with me. All sounds good and I also look forward to it.

This place has a large number of cabins. Reservations for 2015 can be made after November 15th. 2014
17 Comfort cabins w/bathroom/showers, 5 of those have no Air conditioning. Sleeps 3 to 6
6 Traditional cabins with out bathrooms. Sleeps 3 to 6
2 four person cabins with no bathrooms. Sleeps 2 to 4
1 Ranch cabin w/bathroom, Sleeps 4 to 8
To all you 2015 WCR Hopefuls, the arrangement these guys have sounds good to me as well with lots of flexibility on pricing. I'm also concerned the current place is probably too small and maybe a bit remote. It looks like 20 rooms and a bunch of RV space http://www.meadowcliff.com/resortmap.html (http://www.meadowcliff.com/resortmap.html), so I think we could not have fit the 2014 WCR in there and we'd need to split the group. If we'd need to split up, I'd rather find out if we have alternatives... what do you guys think?
Does anyone know of a campground arrangement up toward Twain Harte (I think) that has a similar range of options for lodging and it pretty big as I recall. I don't remember the name, but it came up a couple years ago as a rally location maybe. Or maybe I went there as a scout or ?? Randy - maybe it was your suggestion in the first place?
If we can find something like what the Black Hills Rally have setup, I'd like to hear about it. One thought would be to move the whole thing to Graegle and ride around in the Sierra Butte... A nice thing there is you're at altitude and enjoying cool air most of the time. Ramos - you probably ride up there on occasion? I think the Graegle area has lodging options we could consider as well. There's the Gray Eagle Lodge (http://www.grayeaglelodge.com/cabins/ (http://www.grayeaglelodge.com/cabins/)), but that might be getting pricey.
Frank
Howdy Frank,
I have been through that part of the state although not in some time. The Pine Crest area used to pretty good, I think. I am usually involved with the riding and less with accommodations but I will check out the area(s) you are discussing.
With the fires raging through the far northern California mountains it looks as if the riding in this area will be on hiatus so I will get down there over the next few weeks if I can.
Perhaps I will stop in Oakdale and see if the gentleman there can get away from his shop and go for a ride.
I will keep everyone posted on the possibilities.
Ride safe,
Mike Ramos.

My original post was going to be bad news as I went to register my senior daughter and found out graduation ceremonies are June 5 --- and knowing memorial day is usually the last weekend in May --- and we go the next that put me out of luck in attending the rally ( note - I had issues with this once before and I could get none of you Kookaloo people to even get close to telling me I could miss the graduation) BUT---- I WAS all wrong as Memorial Day is always the last MONDAY ( which I know but normally the above does apply as well ) and thus bottomline -- I can GO. I can GO ---- ya I can GO --- hope that doesn't spoil anyones plans.....
Good news indeed Steve.....have you ever been over Monitor Pass before?
Book your room.
no sir but looking forward to it -- I have been up the 395 many times and love that part of the ride and on the 120 to Yosemite that too was nice. Looking forward to the 89/4 maybe 108 loop --- looks to be a perfect day ride
room will be booked soon
stevecc
Great news Steve!
It does look like a great place for a ride or two.
Just booked the last room with a single King Bed. she still had rooms with double queens. I may be bringing a split tail with me. if she doesn't go I would gladly trade rooms with a couple that want the King.
Ill be rolling in mon eve. riding tues-sun.
My cabin mate last WCR was a prude, wouldn't put out. :bad:

Very cool Scott!
I will also be there on Tuesday to pre-run the mountain routes. You are in for a treat.
Hey Pat,
have you (or anyone else) ridden Hwy 4 , The Alpine St Hwy recently, it goes from Angels Camp and meets up with Hwy 89, Monitor Pass?
Also, who's ridden Pikes Peak, Colorado, lately?
Then there's the Old Priest Grade and the 120 between Moccasin and Big Oak Flat, not to mention the "Little Dragon" on Hwy 49 just down the road from them near Coulterville.
So many good roads there, it's hard to pick, guess getting there a few days early would be the go.

Klavdy,
I have both driven, and ridden up recently..........................It is paved all the way to the top. (The parking lot at the top is still dirt though, although they may make some changes after this year's Hillclimb finish accident)
The road itself is excellent...................The only thing you'd have to contend with is the weather. It can snow/hail/rain at anytime, even in mid-summer...........A ride up earlier in the day is better, as weather usually moves in during the afternoon.
OK, I have a stupid(?) question: Where is there fuel available in the area. My google search didn't look too promising. Gardnerville is 30+ miles away. Am I going to need to bring a drum of fuel?
There is a store in Walker, about 4 miles south of the hotel.
Will food be a problem? Or do I need to sock on MREs? :bad:
There is a restaurant on site, open for breakfast and lunch... Dinner is available for special occasions.
Hey guys , there is a gas station at Topaz Lake about 4or5 miles north of the KOA. Also a mini-mart , small hotel and Casino just as you cross into Nevada. They used to have a pretty good buffet back in the day. I know people who live in wellington Nevada and we would go there for a night out.
Tina and I are planning to take a trailer. Has anyone else booked an RV spot? We will try to book spot next to you. :drinks:
got my room booked --- My reservation came back with this notice --- don't know if it will be in place during our rally but I would expect so as summer is dry.
Early Check-In is NOT allowed!
Please note that due to recent US Forest Service and BLM restrictions, no campfires or charcoal BBQs. Propane BBQs are allowed but must be 15 feet from any brush. Charcoal BBQs are allowed in the 100 building. Community Campfire in the RV Pavillion is allowed with PRIOR permission from management.
There are plenty available still ----so book away ----------- here is what is still open. PS ---the place is closed January February and you have to leave a message but the gentlemen will get back to you within a few days.
3 - kings
8 - 2 queens

Procrastinating over, reservation made. Chainus and I are planing on attending WRC this year. Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year. Still on the fence? Rooms will be running out. Don't miss out on the fun. You will be glad you did. FJ rally's are addicting.
Kurt
Very cool Kurt...gonna bring both bikes?

snatched up one of the 2-queen rooms for myself and "Marlboro Man " Zari.
Spoke to Tim about dinners and he knows a guy who can come out and do a Mobile BBQ for us on a night of our choosing.
Sounds like this Years West coast Rally is gonna be epic. :yahoo: :dance2: :drinks:
Well alright ....Mark and Craig are coming.... :dance2:
I will be taking the second bunk in Steve's (MoparMan) cabin, my FJ will be ready and ride tested. That reminds me, I need to order some new shoes for the FJ this trip. I think I will also look into some heated gear just in case the Sierras are tad nippy during the rally. I can't wait to see you all again... :yahoo:
Hey Pat....just wanted you to know that I was about to add my name to the attende's list......but as fate would have it....My high school reunion is on the Friday on the weekend of the Rally (a major event- 50th anniversary for the school) .....I was thinking of heading out west to attend the WCR and then hitting the Central Rally on the way back but it looks it is not to be .......doh......oh well I hope you have a great time....and who knows....maybe next year....or maybe I will just head out there later in the summer...we'll just wait and see what journey's I have to take this year.....

Hi guys,
So there's two rooms available at the Coleville KOA now. Donna could only get the first two weeks on June off so won't be able to make the West Coast Rally this year. We'll only be heading to the Central Rally now. For some reason they booked us two rooms (or maybe she did that...something about snoring?). They are both single queen rooms that are now available. We'll miss you West Coast Rally guys but are looking forward to seeing a new part of the country and as she puts it "the carved dudes in the mountains"! :dash1:
