Post by: hairless biker on November 06, 2009, 10:00:33 AM
Hi guys looking for a bit of info here thinking of changing rear wheel on my 91 FJ1200 abs anybody out done this before on one of these models if so what would i need to get to do an upgrade. Would the modification allow me to fit a wider rear tyre than what is fitted as standard.

It's never been done before.

If you upgrade, you will lose your ABS.  That is if it is still working.

David, not necessarily.
If you want to keep your ABS,  Sandy Kosman (Windsor Ca.) offers a service where you send in your old rim (with the ABS)  and he will cut the old 16" rim off and weld on a new wide 17" rim. (beware $$)

Yeah, Pat, I thought about going that route several times.  However, my ABS no longer works anyway and I was too afraid to even price that option.

BTW, is there a shortcut to polishing this stupid wheel rim?  I swear that I've sanded off half the thickness and it's still dull.  How far into the metal do I have to go to reach the shiny stuff?  :-)

Taken from the www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk (http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk) site.
"HORST BLIM'S ABS WIDE RIM CONVERSION
Many FJer's have wanted to fit a wider rear wheel rim to their FJ's whilst retaining their ABS. Now it's no problem. Our old friend Horst Blim has done the necessary machining etc, to fit the 5.5" FZR rim to the ABS FJ.
Horst can supply all parts necessary and can arrange shipping. Check out Horst's website at www.hbbike.de (http://www.hbbike.de) and don't worry Horst speaks good English too !"

His email address is info@hbbike.de

Kidding? No, man, I'm serious.  How far into the metal do I need to go before I hit the shiny stuff??????

Is that better?

Naw, I just being lazy and want instant gratification.  FJ Tom did such a good job on my '98 rims, I'll never be able to duplicate it in my lifetime.

And, I don't wink at guys.  :-)

Just remove the metal until the pits are gone, no further. The metal stays dull as you progressively wet sand with the 600/1000/1500/2000 grit paper. The final step, the deep luster, comes out with multiple applications (3 to 5) of Simichrome and power buffing. I like Simichrome over jeweler's rouge.
There is no magic layer of shiny aluminum.
On my first attempt at polishing the wheel rim edges I did not go deep enough so when I buffed with Simichrome I noticed small pits I left, sooo...back to the 1000 grit to start all over.
On the '88FZR front rim, on the face of the rim edge are the raised cast 3.5X17 and other mfgr's info. which I removed by hand with a grey sanding stone (made by Dremel), prior to the 600/1000/1500/2000 exercise.

Let me know if I can help you David, no really.

About time you offered!  The wheel is boxed up and ready to ship........

Kidding, but I'm still not winking.  And, yes, I know there's no magic shiny aluminum layer. Sheesh, I'm just yanking your chain.  :-)

I'll keep working on it, maybe it'll be ready by Spring.  :-(
