Hello, I am working on getting an '85 FJ1100 basket case up and back on the road. The stock exhaust is garbage and am looking for 4-1 options. The only full set I can find is the Vance and Hines set up that I have heard bad things about. Really would like to find a D&D system but are not available for the older bikes.
Will an FJ1200 system work with no bending of header pipes? If it is a mounting bracket issue, I'll make it work. Just not sure of the spacing betwen exhaust outlets and header bolts.
Thanks
other than the mounting brackets for the can all the FJ headers are the same as far as mounting on the engine.
KOokaloo!
Hello Stack, welcome aboard.
Yes a later FJ1200 system (head pipes and collector) will fit *except* for the location of the mounting tab on the mufflers, which can be made to fit your early FJ location with a piece of flatbar stock.
Re: Aftermarket headers. In my personal opinion I would not recommend a 4 into 1 system due to the inaccessibility of the oil drain. It's a PIA. I know 'cause I have a 4 into 1 Kerker on my '92 and it's a hassle at oil change time. Yes the 4 into 1 design offers a wee bit more power at top end but for a street bike the point's moot.
The D&D systems are a 4 into 2 into 1 design which allows full access to the oil drain, furthermore, the slip bracket on the D&D muffler will slide into whatever position you need.
IOW, while not specifically listed, Yes, the D&D fits the 'early FJ's just fine.
Cheers!
Thanks very much!! I'll start to track down a D&D!!
Stack,
If you really want a 4 into 1 aftermarket exhaust that you can still change oil easily with then Supertrapp Exhaust is probably the best ones out there. Supertrapp does not make their exhaust systems for FJ's anymore (or at least I don't think they do) but if you check with numerous motorcycle junk yards you will find one. They may charge you a pretty penny for it but they are still out there you just have to know where to look.

D&D is just as easy to change oil AND its a 4-2-1... better low end and no hole in the power at 5-6k rpm. Plus, you can still find them new...
