Well, the seller wasn't lying. There is no spark.
I checked #1 and #4 cylinders, neither one has anything.
I also checked the leads to coils from the TCI- they have power.
It occurs to me that I have the 550 that has known good coils and pickups, waiting for that new TCI I ordered. How good of an idea would it be to take the FJ600 TCI and and plug it into the 550 to try?
Swap coils to see if you have a bad coil...
If it's the TCI, rather than trying to find a oem replacement, there is a company in New Zealand that makes digital replacements for the early Yamaha analogue units...they are called ER&D and the name of the product is called HyperPac...

You might have better luck with them, rather than waiting for a used oem to appear.

I know of them. I ordered a new TCI for my 550 fro another place. I am going to copy my research here.

If you know that the pinouts on the 550 TCI are the same as the 600, then perhaps it would be worth trying, BUT why risk it if this is unknown - you may just end up with 2 dead TCI units.

Neither coil fires. I'm pretty sure if I swap, that will remain the case. :biggrin:

I think all the FJ and XJ inline fours have it.

Don't know yet. Manual says to check pickup resistance, will try that.
Dunno how much the XJ600 and FJ600 have in common, but I found this on the internets (so it MUST be true :)
That switch was killing the spark. It'd crank over just fine, but not get spark. The neutral switch, side stand switch and clutch are all wired into the L/B and L/Y wires that feed into the ignitor unit. If any of them is having a problem, you won't get the ignitor to fire.

They are the same bike. It was called FJ600 in the US market and XJ600 in Europe. No idea why.

It's a possibility. I will need to check this, but if the electrics are anything like the 550, there is a "safety relay"which controls both 12V and ground to the ignitor box. All the safety switches (sidestand and clutch/neutral) come in to this relay and this is how the engine is killed when a safety circuit is tripped.

Scan a picture of the schematic and post it if you get a chance. I'm sure there's a way to at least rule out the safety switches.
Well, it's definitely the safety circuit. How do I know? I took the safety kill wire out of the TCI connector and got spark.
I also discovered I have a broken clutch interlock switch.
The schematic in the Clymer manual is crap. It doesn't even show the black/white wire to the ignitor.

Had the same issue with my 89 1200 when I bought it. Tried chasing wires for a couple days, saw where the previous owner had done the same and probed the wires. Eventually had to bypass both the clutch switch and side stand switches. Started right up and has been that way ever since (well now that'll Change with the rewire job...wonder how many times that will trip me up?!). Just have to remember the side stand before you ride off - like all the other motorcycles I owned before it!
