Title: Breakin the Rally rules
Post by: Mark Olson on May 22, 2014, 04:00:19 PM
We all know the rule about no major work on your fj before the Rally , so is this too much?

1.New rear tire
2.readjust suspension
3.do the ignition coil power mod
4.oil change/flush hydraulic fluids
5.sync carbs
6.Ride the hell out of it.

sounds like a few hours and a 6 pack  :wacko2:

OK, here's my version:
1. Haven't ridden in 2 years.
2. New bike.

Do I qualify too?

It's the 48 hour rule you need to follow...

Ed, you won't have your FJ?

Nope, either a "loaner" FJ or the KTM.  FJ is not up to the task yet  :cray:

You will absolutely love that KTM....It might be a smige tall for you, just use your tippy toes.

I do hope you can get it out here for next week's rides.

That's puppypiss,
1. New front and rear tire
2. Rebuild carbs, 40 pilot, 117 mains, intake boot orings
3. Mount rear trunk
4.lithium ion batt
5. New throttle cables
6. Fz1 swing arm and brakes
7. Fz1 rear shock
8. New clutch slave
9. Change all fluids
10. 3100 mile road trip

Grinning ear to ear the whole way in anticipation.

No such thing as too tall.  I'll screw hockey pucks or aluminum blocks to my boots if I have to.  Whatever it takes  :drinks:

I should actually HAVE it for 48 hours AFTER the Rally.  Does that break the 48 hr rule?  It'll show up with the Florida participants.

Huh? 48 hours after? The Florida crew is gonna show up 48 hours after the rally? No, that can't be right.

I get soooo cornfused....

Well, If they arrive Thursday night, I guess I'd have it for 48 hours by Saturday night.  If the Rally ends when the riding is over, then I would have it for 48 hours after the rally.  Does that make sense?
I dunno, I mean I've already paid for it, so I guess I own it now. I haven't ridden in so long I'm confused myself.  Never mind ...

Loaded it in the trailer, might add 10mm more fork oil but that's it...  No more dicking around with it.  It is what it is and the rest will have to wait until after the rally......

I have adhered to the no major work/mods 1 month prior to the rally.

I did add a Yamaha sticker to the Suzuki wheel....

I wish I had stopped working on the FJ a month ago. Just got the carbs back on yesterday. Started it, fired right up, idled nice, blip test good. I think I'll call it good and sync them in willits. I'm bringing a back up bike in case things go south on me. I have some questions for those with more syncs under their belt than I.

Cya soon.

A couple nights ago I decided to adjust my chain a little. There were some funny noises coming from the rear wheel hub. I had been having some issues with getting the wheel to spin freely and had been messing with the bearing spacers in the hub. Opened it up to find the bearing in the sprocket carrier had blown up. I went to the shop the next night and made a few new spacers in .010" different length increments.

Put the wheel back on and it still dragged. Donna said "why is it making that noise?". Its just the brake rotor was my response... Hmmmmm... removed the caliper and voila! The wheel spun freely. The bracket I made to hold the caliper was not quite centered and one brake pad was always rubbing the rotor. A little sanding on the bracket and all is well.

A couple lessons learned:
-wheel bearing spacers need to be the right length
-don't ride until they are
-sot this out more than 48 hours before you leave for a rally

Derick,  The best news is you discovered and fixed it before the rally.  :good2:  Nothing forces you to do a good inspection of the bike like going to a rally!

Already handled it ... not stock fj shock , it was the bushings that go in the lower eye of the penske shock. made out of aluminum and it appears they are only good for a few years. the upper ones I made myself out of steel and are still primo .
all other bushings and brgs are ok and got fresh grease.

pending no other distractions I will be rolling in to willits thursday.
