Hello All,
I need a little help with a couple of things. First, I took my 90 FJ for a quick ride the other day and noticed that I couldn't get it to idle unless I had the choke on. She's been sitting for a couple of months and I am hoping that some fresh gas will do the trick. But deep down I feel that I have bigger problems. This brings me to my second issue. I apparently have oil leaking from somewhere on the bottom of the engine towards the rear. I noticed it when I took the bike out for a quick ride and noticed that I had oil in my back tire. I got it home and tried to pinpoint the source of the leak to no avail. I don't think that it is coming from the oil filter because the oil path/spray starts further back.
Anyone got any ideas of where it could be coming from. I'm hoping that my engine is not trashed. BTW it only had 12k miles on it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Tim, you've just met the FJs 2 weak points: clogged carbs & a failed clutch slave cylinder. Don't delay on the slave or you'll toast the lower fairing/cowl as well. A bit of digging in the Files section will get you in the right direction.

Ed is spot on with the carbs. But have you tried adjusting idle? Are your carbs syncronized? It could also just be the choke cable needing some lubrication.. Take of your gas tank and have a closer look on the choke line. While down there, sync your carbs if thay havent been synced for a while..
In regards of the oil leak, do you notice any spills on the ground when you got it on the stand etc.? Does it only leak whiles driving?

Welcome ! Try some fresh gas and run her for awhile. But that's after the oil leak is fixed ! Oil on the rear tire isn't required.... Take nothing for granted on the oil leak. Start up front at where the oil cooler lines feed into the engine, oil drain plug, oil filter area, on top of the engine is the valve cover gasket and the gaskets that are around the valve cover retaining bolts, hard to see with a stock air box but there is the chain tensioner gasket, and the pan gasket to start with... Other areas of leakage could be around the front sprocket area to include the seal around the gear shift shaft going into the engine.
How badly is it leaking ? Would it be right at home in a Harley dealers parking lot... :lol: :drinks:

Being a Hardly Ableson (Thats what my grandfather called them when he had one as a young man) owner I represent that remark! Yes my primary drive did leak until I replaced the seals and gasket. Dave

Thanks to everyone for the responses!! I will look in to the clutch slave cylinder. I have the carbs cleaned an synched early last year, but it sat for virtually 6 months. I will take to carbs out and clean them real good and have them synched.

After 1 to 3 months with our crappy gas you might need to clean your carbs really well. I run Seafoam in my gas if I know it will sit for more than 2 weeks. 4 weeks is pushing it for me. And I already have #40 pilot jets. 6 months, eh... Clean the jets out....
