Title: Attaching mesh to inner panels
Post by: JPaganel on May 17, 2014, 09:27:05 AM
So, I have that problem with mesh falling off the inner side panels.

Originally, it attached with small spring clips on plastic posts, but some posts are broken and some clips are lost. How are people dealing with reattaching this stuff?

+1

I used hot glue on my inner fairing screens some 15 years ago, and it's still holding.

I have not had an issue with the side cover mesh pieces. I did have a problem with the mesh pieces falling out of the panels between the tank and the main fairing. To fix that I  positioned the mesh where it belonged, using electrical tape, I wrapped the tape around the whole panel. I used ABS goo and put a small dab of goo where each small posts used to be. I have not had any problems with them coming off since.

This is my ABS goo recipe. The concept is that it works just like plastic model cars with model glue. The ABS goo melts the ABS together, fusing the 2 parts into one.

I use a home made ABS goo.

ABS cement and ABS cleaner can be found at ACE Hardware, Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards and other hardware stores.

I got the recipe from a post on here quite a while ago. Real simple to make. 3 ingredients, ABS Cement, ABS cleaner, very small pieces of scrap ABS plastic or Legos.

In a glass jar I pour some ABS cement, a small amount of the ABS cleaner and the small ABS/lego pieces. Mix it all together, close the lid on the jar and let sit overnight. You will have ABS goo the next day.

For the actual repair. I use the ABS cleaner to clean the affected area and the broken off piece. I apply a coating of pure ABS cement to the affected area and the broken piece. Then I apply some of the ABS goo to the broken piece and attach it to the affected part.

I have had very good success with this formula.

Those are what I mean by "inner panels".

There are rubber gaskets between the mesh and the plastic. Did you leave those in place, or take them out?

Mine did not have the rubber pieces. I would imagine that the rubber pieces installed or not will not make a difference on how the ABS goo would work. I can guess that without the rubber pieces that vibrations may cause cracks in the goo and require another application of goo at a later date.

You need a better term.

"Hey honey, can I borrow a glass jar from the kitchen to put my goo in?"

I fear this would not be seen in a positive way in many households.

I have goo. I also have a glass jar my wife gave me. And that is pretty much what I said to get it...
