Well, I finally pushed too far and ran the old girl out of gas. Two things, the bike is freaking heavy to push. And the tank really does have 5.8 gallons of usable fuel.

Well, what are you going to believe? What the book tells ya, or what you learn the hard way?..
Of course, think of how much harder to push it would have been if you had had a full tank of gas...
Hope you didn't have to push her to far Mike..... Did you know you were on reserve fuel ?
George
Proly get a lot stronger pushing the FJ instead of just driving it. Strong like bull, smart like tractor. :good2:
Wow, you're paying a lot for gas!

3.2 miles, just reinforces the lesson George. And I was suspicions that my reserve system was inoperative. Now I know.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but that's half price of what I pay here in Hungary. Last time I did the conversion, I paid $8.69 per gallon of diesel. I put super unleaded in my FJ, so I pay close to $9 or $10 per gallon.
And yes, I've pushed my bike before. It is a HEAVY beast. Makes me think how that engine can push all that weight so fast.

I had a Yamaha Virago 920 once that I ran down to the reserve "knowing" that I had a gallon or so of reserve fuel. I switched to reserve and yea, I made it about 100 yards then flame out........... Lesson learned. It was one of the early electronic reserve systems.
Now its 150 miles then start to look for fuel.

Yesterday - Southern Ontario, Canada...$1.31 per litre for regular...or...$5.24 (Canadian Dollar) for a U S gallon :bomb:
John.
I didn't notice the price. WOW, they must have saw you pushing the bike. cha-ching! :greeting:
I've coasted into gas stations more times than I can remember, a few on this bike, and learned a few tricks. (Petcock being a wear part on these old FJ's can cause this kind of problem...)
Latest: pull the choke all the way out and hit the starter with the throttle closed for a few seconds, and then pop it open. It'll start revving hard. Accelerate as fast as possible, then kill it at high speed and coast. Repeat. Will let you use the last of the gas in your bowls. Repeat as necessary. Gotten the last mile or two to the station before this way...
And yes, it's a heavy bike.

3 miles! Holy crap. I once tried to push mine about 4 blocks to the car wash. I didn't want to wash a hot engine. I made it about a block and a half before starting it up and riding it home. I got used to hand washing it.
DAMNIT LOL, the other day I put in 5.6ish, I was pretty surprised. I noticed somewhere it said 258 miles per tank, um...no haha. Ya its a heavy pig to push, I'll be filling at 150:-)
