Title: WCR from CO, any route suggestions?
Post by: CatTomb on April 05, 2014, 09:48:28 PM
Really looking forward to the WCR. Thanks to everybody who is helping to make it happen. :good2: :good2: :good2: :good2: :good2:

I am planning on leaving Tuesday morning and heading to Coos Bay to visit my dad. I'll spend the night there and then head south in the morning.

This is my tentative route. https://goo.gl/maps/HmwD8 (https://goo.gl/maps/HmwD8) To those of you who have ridden the area, any other suggestions or things to avoid?

Thanks in advance for your insight, :good:

Checked out your route map, Jeff...

I'm envious of all those squiggly lines!  You're certainly adding some extra miles by getting away from the coast in places, but it sure looks worth it!  Not to add more miles, but the PCH down to Fort Bragg and then the 20 over to Willits is EPIC!  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Your Map starts in Sisters, OR.  I'm assuming that you already know about HWY 242 (Old McKenzie Pass), and didn't depict it due to Google Maps not allowing routing through there (probably because the HWY is currently closed for the winter).  If you didn't know about it, then let me assure you it is well worth the detour.  That is, if it is open by the time you come through.  Last year it opened in mid May, so there is a good chance that it will be open by then this year, if not sooner.

Also, if your not worried about taking the most direct route, you could also hit 'The Aufderheide'

It runs south from HWY 126, down to HWY 58 in the vicinity of Oakridge/Westfir.  You can head west towards Eugene and I-5 from there.

Thanks Ron and Garth!

SR242 is my "go to" ride in the summer and fall. It starts a mile from my house. It is a very fun "out and back" to clear the cobwebs and get my kookaloo on. Lots of good hikes and dirt bike trails up that way too.

I don't think I've been on 'The Aufderheide', it's definitely being added to the route. Thanks!  :good:

Bragg to Willtts I think I have done but might be added ... depending on the condition of my butt and back.  :pardon:

Look forward to seeing you too Ron, and Garth, I hope your AZ plans allow attendance.

You are welcome Jeff, although I'm Greg, Garth is PDXFJ.  As of right now, there is a good chance that I might make the WCR, and if so, I will be planning on swinging down the Aufderheide myself.   :good2:

And,... If it's open, a side trip up (and back down) the Old Mckenzie Pass.   :yahoo:
