Hello Ontario FJers. I am becoming optimistic that we can ride again soon!! I am hosting a tech day , meet and greet , and ride for the 17th of May. Of course it is weather dependant. We will try to do a valve adjustment tutorial if any one is interested. There is lots of room inside the garage so don't be shy. We will start at 8 ish and hope to wrap up around noon . Grab a quick lunch and head out for a nice scenic ride through Niagara.
Sounds like a great day! .... warmer weather... shop talk.... lots of FJs....a nice ride.... just what we need after THAT winter! :drinks:
Maybe I'll buzz up there via Buffalo.... again... ..... should I bring my camera?....
I'll be there...dealing with a work injury, shoulder Rotator cup. Won't be able to tell ya for sure if I'll ride out there, need to ride to see how bad it hurts. Need to put my stainless Supertrapp on and even if I can ride bike there, I want to come for sure learned lots at one in Erin.
Hey Johnie....thx for the invite......I am going to try to make it......looking forward to a great season, good times and tons of riding..... :drinks:
CanDman
Bugger, I have to pass on this one... :shout: I'm sure that you will get a good turn out :good2:
I'll be down riding' 'The Dragon', Diamond Back, etc, etc, in warm and sunny NC that weekend... :yahoo:
John.
Is there a limit to how many fj's a fella can bring?
As many as you can fit in your trailer Rob. Unless you ride over. Then the limit is one.
Good one!!!! :yahoo:
Is there any parts to order to bring with us...say for valve adjustment or stuff like that, and is someone bringing a carb sync gauge..
I will have an assortment of valve shims here. You are welcome to use any of my tools. I have a compressor, a good solid bike lift and an overhead crane. Tool selection is good. Plenty of space. We can easily park 15 bikes inside. Hopefully we will have a lot of helpers here. If you don't need anything done, hang out. I will make free coffee for everyone. Unless you are Dutch. They will have to pay.
Carb Sync for sure for me...And my old Kerker had hole so I could hear ticking...new Supertrapp doesn't so hopefully new gaskets on it and we will see..

If you are thinking of doing yours, Rich, your engine has to be cold, cold... Dont start your engine Saturday morning, and you will have to trailer your bike over..... :mail1: :flag_of_truce:
Just the regular tools are required to access and remove the valve cover.... then you need the valve adjustment tool for exchanging shims, and .... the needed shims.... You should have a new valve cover gasket, and the bolt grommets/ seals on hand if you dont know when the last time they were replaced. A tiny bit of gasket silicone is needed for the 'half moons' on the gasket..... Think that's it....have i missed anything?
I am bringing what shims I have for exchanging, my valve adjustment tool, and my carb sync tool as well....and any other tools I think I should take..., so If you want to use those.... fill yer boots. :good:

I may have heard at one time that Kerker is made by Supertrapp... is that true??
Is the Kerker 4-1 header the same as the supertrapp? If so, I wonder if the Supertrapp can would just fit onto the kerker 4-1 header... :scratch_one-s_head:
My Kerker is 4-1-2....I'm putting on a Stainless 4-1 Supertrapp
Happy spring guys!
Still have snow banks and a foot of snow on the lawn but hope to be riding soon.
I'll note that date on my calendar and see if I can join you.

Awesome, Andrew! Looking forward to it! Should be warmer down here in May... :drinks:
I've put aside that day for the clinic. The new rubber better be on well before that - dang 16" rims are a PITA but I can't afford or source the parts to do a 17" just yet.
I am considering bringing along a bunch of high output LEDs that can replace the instrument cluster bulbs. Maybe only worth it to someone with bulbs that are going down one by one.
Also relays for headlight and coil power restoration. eg. I was losing 15% of the voltage from the battery by the time it made it to the headlight.
Anything else electrical - let me know. I'm no genius but I can plan ahead to get the knowledge and parts from my various sources.
For your info Johnny i dont drink coffee,,,,im a tea totaller.
If you need a donor bike to shim valves i can trailer my black beast over.
An old friend who is a long time Yamaha mechanic is putting together a shim kit for me from all his spares. Says he has 100's of shims. He worked at the local Yamaha store for 25 years. Very good resource .He may be there too.
Does anybody in this group of fellas, and in the Golden Horseshoe, have equipment to remove, mount and balance tires?
I've got tire irons but it would be nicer to have a proper bead breaker, etc. to cut down on the frustration level.
One of these days I'll get some equipment because I really like being the DIY'er.
I'm in Orangeville and would drive up to 2 hours each way, ie. down to Niagara area or Oshawa is OK. Or Orillia - going the other direction.
Sorry Charlie I can't help you in that regard. The last time I removed a tire I promised myself it would be the last time. LOL . I do plan on buying all that stuff at some point. Just haven't yet.
I'm swapping pipe tomorrow and had bike running, going to go for a short snort to see how my shoulder holds up...fingers crossed :good:
Well how is the shoulder holding up?
Brought bike home today went 30-40 kms not far but felt ok , I didn't want to stray far , looks like I need to re-build start from what I read here it's showing symptoms that will require it being done.
Just a reminder of the clinic coming up in a week. If you just want to go for a nice ride stop by around noon. PM me and I will send you my address.
My Saturday just opened up. I can bring another carb synch tool (Morgan) as well if helpful. It would be great to meet you guys and check out the bikes. I'll PM you for your address.
Rob
Hopefully we get rid of all the rain before then.
:hi: I hope all goes well for you guys this weekend :good2: I'm off to ride 'The Dragon', (and other roads), for a long weekend of fun, as of this afternoon :yahoo:
John.
Clinic was awesome, learned a lot while I was there and got to meet a few new faces...Thank you Johnnie and to your wife for having us over got my list started on new things to do..4 brush starter and finnish the Gixxer swap...
John,
Many thanks again for hosting today's FJ clinic. It was a great venue and your hospitality was much appreciated by all. Glad to have met all you guys and your bikes!!
Rob
Yup. A good day all around. PaulFJ has to be the hardiest S.O.B. of the bunch. He's probably not even back to Napanee as I write this and it's 9 p.m.
I got in the garage at 8 and that was plenty for me. The temperature was sinking to numbing lows.
I saw and heard lots of things to give me better ideas on which way to go for mods: Wheels, master cylinders, mirrors, bag racks, exhausts. The valve job procedure was an education for me, being able to see it from a foot away as it progresses.
Thanks to FJJohnnie for being such a generous host. I expect we'll be seeing pictures coming online from this clinic.
Had a great time at the clinic today.
Thanks for hosting this event Johnnie.
A big thank you to Paulfj03 who test rode an 88 fj1200 for me due to a torn hamstring on my part.I can't thank him enough for his patience and understanding for us rookies.
I bought the 88 and now have 3 fjs.
Met some great guys today and look forward to more clinics and rides.
Rob now has as many FJ's as me. How long before number four arrives?
Yes, it was a great ride and more importantly a great opportunity to meet some new (and not-so-new) friends. They may call it a Clinic but I'm afraid there's no cure! Thanks FJ Johnnie for hosting and for the delicious chicken and the "gezelligheid". Sorry we couldn't stick around for the ride. Hope everyone made it home safely. Caught about 20 min of rain between Ridgeville and Cayuga, then it was clear sailing all the way home. Here are a few pics:

I got in at 1030pm . It has cooled down to 6c (?)..... but I was actually dressed for it and I did not start to feel the cold until the last little bit. The traffic was light so I made good time.
Thanks John! :drinks: Yet again , you have put on an excellent day with a great bunch of guys and a great bunch of bikes!!! GOOD TIMES!! I learned new ideas that I'm looking forward to trying. It was great to see everyone again.... Looking forward to more clinics and rides..
Thats a nice 88, Rob... Good on ya!

Thanks guys for coming out to the first Ridgeville clinic. We had some very nice bikes out and some real good guys who were all willing to help .Maybe we should make it an annual thing however pick a non holiday weekend as I am sure many people couldn't make it.
Thanks to Paul for leaving his valve tool so I could finish up and to John for hosting. And to everyone else for helping out.
There was some Nice eye candy there too!
The pics do not do it justice.
A 91 FZR with 3000kms Crisp and clean and no caffeine!!
:good2:
Here is a memento poster presented to John for hosting the clinic.
Just a few details about the poster to get out of the way . . . inserted after the image.

Poster design: Charlie Ross (Charlie-brm)
Signed poster photo: "Hersey289" - thank you.
Yamaha Canada provided give away merchandise that was handed out at the clinic. In no other way is there an implied endorsement or affiliation to this clinic.
But a big thank you for their generosity.
It wouldn't feel right to leave out the logo of the FJ's manufacturer.
One print of this poster was made and signed.

Wow.......I am so sorry I couldn't attend ....looks like you all had an amazing day........unfortunately my injuries from Australia are stubborn and taking much longer to heal then expected. I did inform our wonderful host that I would have to excuse myself this time and asked if he could please pass along my warmest wishes to the rest of the group. Looks like an awesome time and I can't wait until I am able to ride again and join the group for what promises to be an Hallmark Anniversary Year for this great bike !!! Until next time.... :drinks:
CanDman
A big thanks to Charlie for the poster. Are you a graphic designer? I noticed Gary had not signed it. He stopped by today to pick up his bike, and subsequently signed it. I will have it mounted and proudly displayed on my garage wall. Or the man cave. Not sure yet.
It was good to see so many gearheads all speaking a common language. I think its called Yamlish, or Yamalic. We'll go with Yamalic as it could also be the short form for Yamaholic. For which there is no cure. ( Maybe more cowbell? )
Of course thank you to Yamaha Canada for the generous swag.
Right on, very cool :drinks:
Very, very good lads...kudos all around :good2: That's what the FJ brotherhood is all about...right there.
Sounds like something we should try, out here on the left coast...
I think if we all do this as a group world wide I think it spreads knowledge of these bikes to all and keeps our love for these fine machines...with everyone doing the mods and and re-inventing these bikes there's no reason why we can't see these bikes go on for many years to come
Looks like it was a great day! Clinic days (or Manshed Days ) are something I love attending and hosting, makes it so much more fun working away with other people around :good2:
