Title: atupid question?
Post by: fintip on March 29, 2014, 03:12:42 AM
How does the helmet lock work? Is there any way to hang your helmet on the helmet lock that wouldn't have it melting on your exhaust?

I think their useful for hang and lock when you go in a store.

I lock the D-rings then shove it over the rear turn signal. It keeps the paint off the exhaust.

I use a cable helmet lock with a combination lock, I just turn one tumbler one position so I don't have to fiddle to undo it. Loop it through or around anything. Ebay has all sorts and they're cheap.

Never seen a helmet lock that prevents some miscreant from taking a piss in your lid, or other nasties of that nature.

Mine comes with me when I get off the bike.

Totally agree with this one. My helmet goes where I go!

When touring, I would typically make a quick judgement of the area.  Is it dark?  Lots of people around?  Can I see the bike from my table at a restaurant?  I would ALWAYS secure things, but depending on my comfort level, that would range from putting the helmet/jacket into the Givi top case (IF I have the room), using the seat lock or just taking everything in with me.

When I use the seat lock, I use it with cables like these:

They are inexpensive and I always have a few I carry with me.  You can run them through the chin bar on your helmet, up through a sleeve of your jacket and back to the seat lock.  That allows you to create a decent deterrent to a "grab and dash" and place your gear far away from the exhaust.   :good2:

Take your helmet with you. I have seen too many with cut straps. Just the cost of a replacement face shield would warrant not leaving it with the bike. Some people will steal just to say they did along with other nasty things. JMO.

Precisely why I mounted a trunk to my bike. Out of sight out of mind.

+1.

It'll hold my helmet and jacket or tank bag.

A wise man once told me 'Unless you're pretty sure, don't leave it laying around if you can't easily afford to replace it.'.

Weird. I've never known someone personally who had anything done to their helmet. I almost always bring mine in with me, but it's a pain. But I'm about to have my givi rack fixed (amazingly, the wing rack is made of 5 pieces I think, and the piece that broke? Givi had one single one left. Likely to never be manufactured again), and I keep a bag mounted in the top rack position and use it likewise normally, so problem solved I suppose. I just wondered how it was supposed to be used, always seemed kind of stupid to me. (The cable lock is a good idea, though, I'll keep that in mind.)

Seriously, what kind of shade places are you guys hanging out that you have this shit done to your helemts? haha. Serious biker bars? Sturgis? I guess Austin's really low crime rate is showing...

I had a helmet stolen off my bike when I was going to Orlando Jr. College (a very long time ago). I use the helmet lock if I'm going to be gone for a while. When I travel OOT I carry a cable to secure my jacket, but I usually carry it anyway, just because.

Yeah, I tried several different ways to use the helmet lock, and nearly every way left the helmet on the stock exhaust. Didn't really plan on using it much, just wanted to see how it worked. Maybe with a half helmet or something, it would. I take mine with me, except when I go to the local biker bar. Everyone leaves their helmets on their bike, and I always sit outside where I can see mine. I'd be more worried about it running off at my local Walmart parking lot. I probably would feel more protective of it if it were a custom helmet, though.
