Title: Carb Rod Loose
Post by: petetb154 on March 23, 2014, 06:28:52 PM
Hey All,
is there anything we can do to tighten up the holes that choke rod runs through the aluminum carb body?
The holes in my carb are worn and the rod rattles around, wearing the brass choke plungers.
Wondering if anyone has figured out a way to put a bushing (nylon or brass) in the holes to tighten things up.

Thanks in advance.

I have not heard of that wearing out on the FJ carbs. If you don't get a timely response then send Randy at RPM an email. If anyone knows about the FJ carbs, its him....

Nothing that I am aware, that is one of the wear issue with the carbs. The clip that holds the cable is higher and acts as a lever against the choke plungers and causes them to wear.

No cure that I am aware of.

I just ordered (4) of these brash bushings for $1.98 each.

I'll let you all know if/how they work.

When I rebuilt my FJ's carbs last year, I found the same type of wear on my choke plungers also.  To solve the problem, I was advised to install a small spring (between the choke rod and the carb mounting bracket) in order to keep the rod under tension so that it wouldn't rattle around and cause greater wear.  I ended up getting one from the local ACE hardware store.  I can't remember the exact size, but it was a light one that was about a 1/2 inch (10-12 mm) shorter than the distance from the rod to the bracket (I want to say about 2+ inches or so).  It worked great for me, stopping the rod from rattling, while also not adding any tension to the choke activation/adjustment (no noticeable tension on choke knob).  Just make sure that the spring doesn't interfere with any of the linkage, and you should be good to go.
