Hi everyone,
I thought I would introduce myself, as I have posted on the site but haven't really introduced myself properly.rather remiss of me....
Here we go, I am 50 years old and work for network rail (railways) here in the UK. My current job is supporting software systems that are particular to the railways only. Before that I did a bit of everything really, plastics, metal plating, food industry!
As for bikes my current bikes are an FJ1200 and a Honda CBR600. The FJ was sitting in a garage for 17 years before I got it. So far I have had a new battery and a second hand set of carbs and it's now running sweet (tanks underwent some extreme de rusting by being filled with coins, wrapped in a duvet and then put in a concrete mixer for an hour!!!!!)....it worked!
That's about it really...
Welcome! What do we call you? 17 years, that is quite some time to be sitting. Happy that you are getting it back on the road. What year is your FJ?
Welcome to the group :good2:. Don't be shy and jump in anytime. Lots of experence with FJ's here. Good on cleaning the tank I have also heard of wrapping them up and putting them in a cloths dryer.
Cheers George :drinks:
Hi and welcome!
Everyone who can find a way to use an concrete mixer for cleaning part form a motorcycle, is OK by my book :good2:
Ken
Welcome, Marcus? ....or? (I too would have sweaty bollocks if I put my tank in a concrete mixer)
I thought you soda blasted your tank. How did your header tubes turn out?
Pat
Quite a handle you got there Betty :mail1:
Hi guys,
Forgot to say that the bike is a 92. As for the tank, I was going to soda blast it but I thought that the concrete mixer would do a better job, loads of rust and crap came out.
I may have weakened some of the welded seams on the tank but it's not leaking yet.
The downpipes are a puzzle as I was told on this site that they would be stainless, I put a magnet on there and it stuck...so...
Are they steel or are they a ferrous form of stainless (some stainless grades will attract magnets I am told) I suppose the only way to tell is to buff one of the pipes up and see what sort of Finish I get.
Either way I will be replacing rusted fasteners and stripping to clean and repaint the odd part here and there.
I did buy a GXSR750 wheel for the rear wheel mod but may not bother.....I am also thinking of some adjustable alloy levers as I have them on my Honda and really like them.
Is it the stock exhaust system? All bets are off it it's a aftermarket system.
Its the stock exhaust system...
Btw I have just bought some stainless hose for the brakes front and rear! Looking forward to fitting those. I got the two line 'racing' ones for the front so i will have to route both lines from the master cylinder.
