I own a fj1100 from 1984, that was bought second hand from a person that did not keep the service manual..
I wonder; i have a small oil leak somewhere, but cant find it. It seems small, but ive kept view of the oil lever through the glass on the side of the engine.
And so i wonder; Is there any differense if i wiew at a cold (winter tempered) engine, or do io need to run it warm first? Are there differences?
It looked as ive got less oil now then when i was last back from driving, but the bike has stood still for 2 days now in the cold. (no rain, snow, but cold temperatures)

Oil will expand and shrink as it heats and cools. This will give a slight difference in the oil level window.
Not sure the hot cold difference would be noticeable though .

Well, my bike, it is almost a museum artifact ;) The milage (mentioned here in metric measure) is 750.000 KM :)
I have a small leak underneath it, drips a few drops when i have used it and its good and warm.. Not much, but its there.
Suspected the (my english is not too good when it comes to technical words) but the bottom bolt where we empty the oil when we change, but it seems as no fresh oil is around that point just after driving..
Got a real cheap MC here, and the motor runs beutifully, so hoping to be able to keep it running for a couple of moore years, as its my first bike :)
Welcome Lars, I have a similar leak and thanks to Randy I found one of the sources. Check around your starter and alternator. Both have O-Rings that can fail and seep oil out when the engine is running. If you have oil up in that area it will one or more of 4 O-Rings. But I still have a small leak but not enough to tear into things. One of these days I will pressure wash it and spray it down with a talcum based (foot) spray. Then any oil leak, any size will leave trails and BINGO!!
I check my oil on the center stand, engine cold, level ground, oil up to tick mark next to sight glass/window.

There are many places you can get minor leaks, including both ends of the crankshaft, the valve cover bolt grommets, the clutch push rod, the countershaft, and even the oil cooler hose connectors. It is also common to get 'blow by' of oil which feeds into the air cleaner housing.
You state that your bike has 750,000 kms. Is this correct? That's a LOT of use.
I guess its possible for an '84, but.....
Are you sure you haven't put an extra 0 in that number?
The odometer only has 5 digits, so to get to 750K kms, it would have had to go around 7 times.

Welcome to the forum. First of, where are you located? Judging by you name (and user name), it seems to have a Scandinavian origin? Im i right,? In which case, what country?
I recently had a oil leak too. Keept leaking on my left foot whiles driving. As FJmonkey described, i located it on the left side on the starter alternato area. The way you describe It resembles exactly how i too experience it.

Thanks :) Yes, its 750.000 KM, wich is a LOT :) Bought this cycle from a old enthusiast that felt that the "biker life" was over for him as his family has grown, and he could not find time for it. Used to drive from my country Norway (northern) to germany, italy etc every season through europe :) My bike here has xxx.xxx km on the milage :)
Just before i got it, he changed the back tire, chain and "the wheels the chain is wrapped around), and oil etc on the front fork :)

Hi again :) Yes, im from Norway (northern Norway, city Bodø) The leak is not so bad, but it appears some small amount of oil below the bike on the center below where the exhaust pipes "gather" below the engine, and a couple of drops hit the ground.. Nothing to bad, but with plannes to keep it running i think its best to check it out :)

Been to Bodø several times, and the scenery is spectacular. Worked for Widerøe a lot of years so Bodø is no stranger :good2:
If I'm not mistaken there's another forum member from Bodø too.
In regard of your oil leak, it might come from the oil housing too. But i guess you probably already knew that :-)
I world recommend converting to the spin on filter, makes the oil change a dream. Can be found at rpmracingca.com

Wow..... 750.000km and still going. And to think some people baulk at these bikes with 75.000 km on them.
I had to read that several times before I understood.
Oil Level
If the motor has recently run, there is likely to be more oil sequestered in the head.

Just onwdering, out of curiosity,
my fj1100 has run over 750.000 KM, it still runs great, just the minor leak to handle.. (will se when the snow dissappears)
How long is it possible that the engine holds together??
It runs smoothly now, but according to some fellas an engine has its limits,, what do you think?
Properly maintained you engine could go over 300K miles. Its already been done by a member here. There is a very good reason the legends racers use this engine. And they run at or near red-line.

Mine is at 466028 miles (750.000 KM), hoping it will hold. Runs smooth still, but as i do not know the previous owners maintananse on the bike, i can help but wonder if its got much left in it..

Wow!, you possibly own the world mileage record in a FJ!. Mine is now 140.000 miles old with no oil consumption and running faster as ever (it could be the head manifolds that get smoothed inner surface with the time), including occasional closed track incursions and fast riding everywhere (the engines get clogged when driven in traffic jams habitually)
My ex-1100 run 165.000 in 5 years and I sold it with a perfect compression test
What about yours?. It would be very illustrative if you check the compression for us (please, please!) :good2:

Well, i am a jackass (dont know anything) about mechanicks, but oil consumption is almost none :) Have a small leak somewhere, can see 1-3 drops when it stops and i park with warm engine, but not noticable on the measure level :)
Runs like a charm actually, no trouble with gears, good speed/accseleration.. All in all a pleasant drive :)

Hi again :) Cant see any noticable oil cunsumption, have a small drip when i park it (2-3-4 drops) after a few minutes, but not noticing anything on the level glass :)
How do i perform a compression test? Im sory but i have wery little mechanickal knowledge :)
