G'day,
I have been putting the bike back together, getting the exhaust pipe headers into position, and I noticed what appears to be dried oil. As per the picture below. Does this mean the valve seal is buggered? Not happy if it is, I have the top end rebuilt a year ago! All the other exhaust valves look fine.

I have the same problem. 2 of my exhaust valves that I can see from the same angle look like that. I am guessing it is the seals also.
We hi-jacketed this thread a bit, but look at the bottom of page 8 and the top of page 9. Might add some information or something to think about.

Not enough there to see at the moment, but I say no. Until you take a few more pictures, the other guide in that cylinder and a couple of other ports too.
I am also replying from my cell and will look at all pictures on the computer later.

Wish I took pictures of mine... Two that I could see looked wet in the same area and two appeared as what I call normal for and exhaust port. The intake shafts that I could see looked super clean. I guess that would be a case for a flexable bore scope for inspection.

Gareth,
Have you gotten a chance to take anymore pictures of the other guide in this port and another port?
By looking at this picture only, while there could be some valve guide to stem leakage, the bigger problem appears to be a loose valve guide in the head allowing oil to pass around the outside of the guide.
The guide does not look like it is protruding far enough into the port. This is a common problem with the FJ exhaust guides and we see it regularly in the car application.
That is why I stock only oversize O.D. Valve guides; Valve Guide +.002 (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Head%3AValveGuide)
Here is a picture of a stock guide in the proper position in the head.

Here is one that is just starting to do what yours has been doing, leaking around the outside of the valve guide.
