Title: Bucketlist check-off
Post by: Burns on February 08, 2014, 08:57:01 PM
I've wanted an FJ ever since the 11 came out when I was working summers at Yamaha of San Antonio and otherwise continuing my career as a perpetual college student and sometime bar-tender.

7 XS650's and a whole bunch of other m/c's came and went but either I couldn't find a nice FJ or I didn't have he money when one popped up.

Well, today I traded #7 (a much modified '83 that I had given a Brit cafĂ© bike treatment to) for an '89 FJ in pristine condition.  The odo says 20K  and I believe it - there is no starter chain noise at all and the chin fairing is cherry. It is a beauty.

I  unloaded it from my truck just as the snow began to fall.

Hurry Up Sunshine.

Welcome to the group.  :hi:. Where do you hale from?

You will love the torque that the FJ has.

With about 1 1/2 -2 months left before decent riding starts back up for much of the US. FJ rally time will be approaching. There are 5 U.S. FJ rally's coming up.

There is a member locator map. Pin yourself and see who may be near you. There are many more members that have not pinned themselves.

Welcome to FJ's. I also just acquired one not to long ago. I don't know how I missed owning one of the best motorcycles ever made for so many years. I also have been through a couple of XS650's and still own a 1981. Alot of great people on here and a load of good information.  Dave

I'm only brand new here myself, but welcome.

The XS six fiddy is a classic, I reckon the FJ will get there as well.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. "Warm" anything is good this time of year.

I took some cell-phone shots of my FJ just now ( its first day in its new home).

It doesn't snow here much but we got 4 or 5 inches yesterday and right now the neighborhood looks like a Xmas Card, so that is the backdrop.  I'll post the pics when I figure out how.

I'm thinking of naming my FJ "Frank" ( like the "my way" guy), though maybe "Francis"  would be less socially awkward back home in Texas.  Well, Austin, not so much.

Funny about that name "Frank"
We have a couple of Franks here who have done their FJs *Their Way*
Truly unique, beautiful and fast FJs.....

"Franklin" would be more politically correct

Welcome!

I am partial to the best color pattern offered.  :yahoo: Don't let the Ambulance riders tell you otherwise.

Thanks for the pic fix (what should I have done/what should I do next time).

You cannot imagine the "seat of the pants" difference from the 750 kitted XS650 that I traded for it. From hot rod model A to George Jetson's flying car.

My favorite color scheme is the red one on the original 1100, but this one is kinda growing on me.

That is the "theft deterrent" Silver and White, looks like it is in great shape. Get a fork brace to protect your front fender (too much fork flex twists the plastic till it cracks). And paint your engine guards, Silver looks good on that color bike.

You scored  :dance2:

The bike already has R-1 brakes (gold spots) so someone knows what they are doing.

The white and silver '89s are beautiful bikes.

I see the previous owner (PO) removed the reflector bracket that supported the front brake hoses. Not a problem but just make sure there is a couple of flat washers between the fender and the tab on the fork leg to compensate for the removed bracket. It's easy to crack those fender tabs.
^^^As our favorite Monkey correctly advises, a fork brace from RPM will help tighten up the front end.

Congratulations.....you did well.... And welcome!
