Most people don't realize that our planet is traveling at 107,000 km/hr or 67,000 miles/hr. I amazes me to realize how fast we are traveling through space......you can't tell from looking at the stars or the moon. You can't tell even by marking the daylight.....but looking at the canvas of the Almighty's paint brush with time lapse photography, it is impossible for me not to marvel with wonder and awe....by the beauty of it all. Kev,
Those numbers would be roughly 0.001% of lightspeed, but yep, that's SpaceShip Earth.
Please note, we have no escape pods aboard, so we need to take care of it.
The Sun, with the Earth and the other planets, is headed generally toward Vega, at about 140 miles per second.
Our Sun is just one minor star in the outer rim of a barred-spiral galaxy, called our Milky Way galaxy, which probably looks like this:
There are hundreds of billions of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy (which is kinda puny, really, as galaxies go).
It's a
LONG way to the next closest galaxy, called Andromeda, but you can see that one without a telescope.
Twice lately, they pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at two places in the sky that looked totally empty, just black space.
The resulting photographs were amazing.
It seems logical that these pictures would be repeated in any possible direction that we might look, from Earth, if no other stars were in the way.
Hang onto your hat, and use both hands:

Wow...that's just beautiful! I spent last weekend camping out in the Mojave Desert here in Southern California. Escaping the ambient light of Los Angeles, the sky was awash with a mind-numbing amount of stars! I spent some time gazing up at all of them and realized that man...throughout time has done exactly the same and must have had at least as many questions as I had. We're all just here for a brief flash of time...soak in as many stars as you can.
Cap'n Ron. . .
Yep Kev, that sure is beautiful. I have also been lucky enough to view the night sky through some of the clearest air on the planet. I could not believe it. 40 years later I still have a vivid image of it in my mind. It is something that needs to be seen first hand.
Mind, I could never describe it as well as this bloke.

Hey fellas....thx for posting......it's hard to imagine how there can be so much beauty around us and yet so much pain and fear and anguish within us. Funny you know......I was watching "The Hunt for Red October" the other day and one scene in particular caught my attention. The American Sub is hunting top secret Soviet Sub with a hydrodynamic propulsion system making the sub virtually silent. Now here is this sonar expert listening for anything that could reveal this stealth(silent) sub. After several hours he goes to the captain with audio recordings of what the Subs computer registers as seismic anomalies or mating whales and tells the skip that the computer is wrong. He plays this audio to the Captain at regular speed...and nothing....sounds like nothing !! Then he plays the same audio at 10 times normal speed and realize that it is man made because of the regular pulse intervals.
in fact here's the clip
Hunt for Red October - Jonsey Reports (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7g6dKncO-I#)
My point in all this.......is........if we can conclude that something is man made by the consistent pulse of a time interval ........how come it is so hard to recognize God within the constant and precise motion of our planet within the heavens :scratch_one-s_head:
I don't mean to sound preachy but I just don't understand why people look so hard not to see it.......we live on a giant ball, spinning every 24 hours on a 22 degree axis in a synchronized orbit around the Sun. And we do it every 31,536, 000 seconds .......... over the past 10,000 years (age of modern man)........that equals 315,360,000,000 seconds.........:mail1: ......Now I am sure a lot of people lost a lot of money on the Super Bowl......but I don't think that there is a soul on this planet that would take these odds of all this being an accident........ :nea:
A Year on Planet Earth (4 Seasons) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Jzw1hjOv4#ws)
I recommend reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Everything"
I just finished it and it was one of the best books I've ever read.
He gives very good layman's descriptions of cosmic events/distances as well as just about everything else from Earth's geological history to microbes, cell structure, DNA, and evolution of the species.
So much had to go just right, from the position of Earth and the type of Sun we have to the first oxygen creating ooze, that the development of life has to be more than just good luck or random chance.
I'm not doing it justice, look up a professional review. Excellent reading.
^^^ Yep, Bill Bryson is special. Here's a favorite quote:
"If this book has a lesson, it is that we are awfully lucky to be here-and by 'we' I mean every living thing. To attain any kind of life in this universe of ours appears to be quite an achievement. As humans we are doubly lucky, of course: We enjoy not only the privilege of existence but also the singular ability to appreciate it and even, in a multitude of ways, to make it better. It is a talent we have only barely begun to grasp."
― Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything
Science and the concept of a higher power (God, Allah, Jehovah, whatever) can coexist.
It's not that science disproves God, it's just that science is too young to understand.
Thanks for the correction on the title, Pat.
I was killing time on a rainy night, waiting for traffic to let up from the evening rush, when I wandered into a Barnes and Noble. Strolling by the tiny Science section, the cover caught my eye so I picked it up and flipped it open to a random page. Just reading a single random paragraph was enough to convince me to buy it. I'd never heard of Bryson before but his writing style and ability to convey complicated topics in a familiar way, while still keeping the wonder of the enormity of the concept, is simply amazing.
Of course I'll destroy all my literary credibility by confessing that I'm currently reading a Tucker Max book.. :-)
I'll get a copy for an "on the road" read :).

I agree 100%. Here's an example of how Bill puts the existence of mankind into perspective:
"If you imagine the 4,500-bilion-odd years of Earth's history compressed into a normal earthly day, then life begins very early, about 4 A.M., with the rise of the first simple, single-celled organisms, but then advances no further for the next sixteen hours. Not until almost 8:30 in the evening, with the day five-sixths over, has Earth anything to show the universe but a restless skin of microbes. Then, finally, the first sea plants appear, followed twenty minutes later by the first jellyfish and the enigmatic Ediacaran fauna first seen by Reginald Sprigg in Australia. At 9:04 P.M. trilobites swim onto the scene, followed more or less immediately by the shapely creatures of the Burgess Shale. Just before 10 P.M. plants begin to pop up on the land. Soon after, with less than two hours left in the day, the first land creatures follow.
Thanks to ten minutes or so of balmy weather, by 10:24 the Earth is covered in the great carboniferous forests whose residues give us all our coal, and the first winged insects are evident. Dinosaurs plod onto the scene just before 11 P.M. and hold sway for about three-quarters of an hour. At twenty-one minutes to midnight they vanish and the age of mammals begins. Humans emerge one minute and seventeen seconds before midnight. The whole of our recorded history, on this scale, would be no more than a few seconds, a single human lifetime barely an instant. Throughout this greatly speeded-up day continents slide about and bang together at a clip that seems positively reckless. Mountains rise and melt away, ocean basins come and go, ice sheets advance and withdraw. And throughout the whole, about three times every minute, somewhere on the planet there is a flash-bulb pop of light marking the impact of a Manson-sized meteor or one even larger. It's a wonder that anything at all can survive in such a pummeled and unsettled environment.
In fact, not many things do for long."
Yea, Bill is a treat to read.. :good2:
Thought provoking to say the least.....the hurdle that I have regarding a 4.5 billion year old earth...would be this.....how big was the sun that long ago? Studies have shown the sun to be shrinking at a rate a 5 yrds every hour. Not really significant over 10,000 years (age of modern man) but over billions of years that becomes a significant number. The radius of the sun would have reached the orbit of Mercury. I use the reference of 10,000 years because it is the only point of which creationists and evolutionists agree upon when dating modern man. I will try to get my mitts on this book by Mr. Bryson, I will have a long flight coming up soon....would be a good way to shorten my flight...... (popcorn)
Kevin, the Sun has also evolved over time.
The controversy throughout early scholar history on how old the Earth is is one of the good chapters. Greats like Newton, Halley (the comet guy) and Lord Kelvin debated this number over their lifetimes. Many significant theories and discoveries needed more time (i.e. an older Earth age) than the prevailing "experts" were willing to conceed at times.
The other wonderful thing about the book is Bryson's ability to find a plethora of the obscure people who did incredible work but just missed the big discovery or their work was falsely credited to someone else. He finds truely remarkable people throughout history that you've never heard of and relates their story. Genius!
Bill Bryson's "Down Under" is a terrific read, even if you're not coming to Australia. A highly recommended read for those are. Those that live here would find it a great read anyway. Bryson is a very entertaining writer.

Sounds like a must read on my way over there...........I am a Creationist....wasn't always...but I have become one over the course of my life. The debate between the 2 schools has been going on for hundreds of years. I guess ones belief is really one made by choice....we humans believe what we want to believe......with or without all the facts. We drive our cars, board our planes and get on the elevators not really knowing if they're safe or not (we believe its safe because someone told us it was safe). I tossed away the notion of a Big Bang Theory a long time ago after reading the 2nd law of Thermal Dynamics
* The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases, because isolated systems spontaneously evolve toward thermodynamic equilibrium—the state of maximum entropy. Equivalently, perpetual motion machines of the second kind are impossible.
The second law is an empirically validated postulate of thermodynamics, but it can be understood and explained using the underlying quantum statistical mechanics. In the language of statistical mechanics, entropy is a measure of the number of microscopic configurations corresponding to a macroscopic state. Because thermodynamic equilibrium corresponds to a vastly greater number of microscopic configurations than any non-equilibrium state, it has the maximum entropy, and the second law follows because random chance alone practically guarantees that the system will evolve towards such thermodynamic equilibrium.
It is an expression of the fact that over time, differences in temperature, pressure, and chemical potential decrease in an isolated non-gravitational physical system, leading eventually to a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. :mail1:
.........someone described it to me like this one time.......If I was to take a Hydrogen Bomb and detonate it in the middle of the dessert what do you suppose you would find? Well......a lot of burnt sand I said.... then he asked me.....any chance of returning and finding Las Vegas? :scratch_one-s_head: .......not based on what I know about explosions !!!
Of all the movies I have ever watched, I never knew the story until the movie was over....... the interesting thing, is that everyone who will have watched that same movie will all have a different perspective of what they saw and understood based on their own lives and personal experiences...... (popcorn) . Someone may lean over and ask what you think.....they may or may not agree....

I did make the notation (*) prior to the quote...I didn't realize I needed to name the source........here is a better explanation of I was trying to say...and I have left the source for your reference...
The First Law of Thermodynamics:Energy can be changed from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed. The total amount of energy and matter in the Universe remains constant, merely changing from one form to another. The First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation) states that energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed. In essence, energy can be converted from one form into another.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that "in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state." This is also commonly referred to as entropy.
Click here for another page (developed by Dr. John Pratte, Clayton State Univ., GA) covering thermodynamics.
I hope this explains it better......

I hope this explains it better......
The explanation that entropy proves there is a God goes something like "we're a very complex species in a very organized world with too many grand things that could't have developed on their own". The big error in that thinking is that the least entropy in the universe was just after the big bang and inflation dispersed all matter/energy uniformly (almost) throughout the cosmos. Since that moment the universe has been taking every path toward higher entropy that is available, including clumping the near perfect dispersion into chunks... all the while reducing the potential of that uniformly distributed matter/energy to do any useful work. Life itself is the winding down of the potential to convert the initial matter/energy into work.
I'll never argue that there isn't a higher being or grand purpose or ??, even though I have the science background to understand there does't need to be one as far as we can tell. I have a fundamental faith that we're not just here killing time (whatever time is...), but really don't understand when someone tries to convince me or anyone else that they understand this whole reality better than I do. You can have your opinion, but it is in effect the same as your asshole and I've got one too. Let's just keep them to ourselves where religion is concerned (and maybe politics).
Besides if you really want to question the nature of what we are all experiencing, read up on the Quantum Multiverse (current leading theory of everything - ref: Brian Greene) and then tell me how God fits in...

I can't resist a weigh-in on Bill Nye's little video. That has got to be the dumbest set of statements that I have seen linked together in a very long time. For him to say that there is no possibility of us continuing to innovate or discover new advances in the sciences if creationism is allowed to exist is stupidity of the highest order. Bill has no specific examples that he pointed to, just general statements intended to paint creationists as a hinderance or even a threat to this country. Does he think that there are no doctors, engineers or scientists that believe the Biblical view of creation? Do you think Bill Nye has ever heard of Sir Francis Bacon, Nicholas Copernicus, Rene Descartes, Blaise Pascal, Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, or Michael Faraday, just to name a few? Does he think that creationism just showed up on the scene in the last few decades and now all of a sudden scientific progress is threatened with extinction?
I personally know a retired engineer who worked for the Army Corp of Engineers, he was involved with the design and construction of several Corp of Engineers dams around the United States during the 1960s through the 1980s. This man has an intellect and education that is equalled by very few people that I have ever met. He has accomplishments behind him that will live far beyond his mortal existance. Yet he believes every word of the Old and New Testament and has been studying and teaching the Bible for over 50 years. His studies have given him a wonder and an awe of the universe that is remarkable. It has not made him uninformed or dull, but truly one of the most genuinely interesting and humble men that I have ever known. And I can assure anyone that has even the least little bit of an open mind, if they dared to give him a fair hearing, they would find his explanations of how the evidences we can observe in geology and astronomy fit the Biblical model remarkably well.
I know I have not likely changed a single mind on this board, that I fully know well. It is not a matter of the mind, but rather a matter of the heart and will. If one wishes to live in rebellion against God, we will attempt to find a way to explain him away.
What a great topic. It must be the extra cold winter that's making everyone just a little nutty. Soon spring will come and we'll turn our focus back to what matters – motorcycling!
In the meantime, I may as well add my 2 cents. I've gone through a bit of a personal "journey" over the past 12 years and I'll spare you the details but it started with me being (or claiming to be) a Christian and now as more of an agnostic at best.
Religion vs. Science: Where the Christian Conservatives are suspicious of the scientific community, I find myself more suspicious of the Christian Conservatives these days. I was raised in a conservative Christian family and do appreciate the values that I've been taught. That being said, I just watched that Bill Nye clip and I think he's spot on. I think that at the root of it, science and religion are really trying to answer the same fundamental question – why are we here? At one time I nicely compartmentalized the two where I figured science asked the question of how and religion the question of why. But that was just my way of dealing with the differences in the two. I also used to think of religion (not spirituality, for that is something else) as having an element of humility whereas science carried a certain arrogance with it. Now I see it as being completely the opposite. Think of it this way – Science looks at the world, universe or whatever by taking in information, analyzing it and coming up with a theory on how something works and then testing against that theory. It is always a theory and always based on what we know at the time. Even the super-smart physicists like Stephen Hawking will say "this is what we believe to be true because it hasn't been disproven...yet". They never claim it to be absolute truth. When new information is presented that disproves a particular theory, then a new theory must be made. So Science does not claim to be right, it just says it hasn't been proven wrong yet. Religion on the other hand, and I am speaking of most organized religion looks at it the other way: "this is what we believe because this is what was written x-thousand years ago and what our fathers and their fathers before them told us so therefore it is right". When new information is provided that is contrary to a religion's belief system the first response is immediate resistance. You don't agree? Check the history books. Some may think that the simple line "...for the Bible tells me so" is a beautiful thing; especially when sung or recited by children but "for the Bible (or Koran, or whatever religious book) tells me so" may also be one of the most dangerous things anyone can say. I don't claim to be a scholar in religious studies (my sister is a pastor and has her M.Div.), but what some of the most prominent scholars tend to agree on these days is that the four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) were not written by eyewitnesses at all, the earliest one was written some 70 years after Christ. Then you add the error in translations over the years, the politics involved in deciding which books were in and which books were out of the Bible and it's really hard to take it as "gospel". Funny how a word that means "good news" has somehow morphed to be understood by many as "absolute truth". Read up on the book of Revelation for instance and you'll find that for many years it was considered to be heresy by the Church. It was written during the time when Nero was emperor and again is thought by many scholars to have been more of a commentary of the known world at that time and the readers of the day understood what it meant. Talk about something taken out of context.
At the end of the day I find it really hard to believe (because it makes no sense to me) that an Almighty being would create a world, universe or whatever and that from the moment we take our first breath we are doomed to eternal damnation unless we believe that someone was nailed to a cross 2,000 years ago – and of course the earth being 4,000 years old at that time. Again, all the current evidence points to a universe that is something like 14.7 billion years old and that humankind has been on this planet much, much longer than what we may interpret from Genesis.
Again, this is just what I believe and just at this time in my life. If I am presented with new information then I will have to consider it and adjust my beliefs accordingly. Does that make me "weak" because I don't have the unwavering "faith of our fathers"? I certainly hope not.

Novaraptor,
Sorry, about the best I can say there would be "Distant Suns" (or similar PC Planetarium/Starmap) on a laptop or handheld device.
The FJ would be good for getting far from the city lights, no doubt.
Distant Suns is available in several formats, and it was endorsed by Arthur C. Clarke (author and inventor of the TV satellite system now in use worldwide).

Cheers,
Red
Thanks, Red, Yeah, distant suns is pretty good. I've used it in the past on the PC, but not on android yet. I've just been thinking that I should try building a mounting point for an EQ mount for one of my 5" maks. I definitely don't want to transport my sct or refractor scopes by bike.. I think the mass of the FJ, with a little bracing, should make a stable platform.

.......acknowledged........the most honest thing any human could ever say..." I can't be 100% sure...but from what I have seen and experienced in life so far......it is what I believe". You may not agree with me or I with you....but I would love to sit down one day and share experiences with you..... :drinks:
We're all on a quest......and we all share the same questions....who am I ? Where did I come from? Where am I going?
Is it really such a stretch to believe someone put us here? It does not ruin me or my belief to think that God has always been and that the universe is probably not far behind......maybe our Galaxy is a young one and our existence relatively new........to me it is irrelevant.....the length of time or the age of the universe is not the deciding factor that for me to embrace the thought that someone put us all here on this tiny bubble.....plants and animals alike.
Finding God.......to me.........is not going to happen in a building....or an idea....or in another man.....or flying into a building.....or coming back from a drowning accident......or listening to someone else's sales pitch......be it a respected scientist.....or a charismatic preacher ........it will happen one day.....sitting alone...watching a sunset....or listening to the ocean roar....or looking up into the vastness of our universe....and realizing that life is a miracle and that somehow I am a part of it....wow !!! Gives me goose bumps to say it !!! I Love you all......and wish all of you ....a

Yes but which god?
" let's talk about politics so we can start name calling, then move on to religion so we can kill each other "
Why, the one true god, that's who.
All other religions are false to the believers of the one true god.
They will see you suffer for eternity if you don't believe.

Funny how a discussion of the vastness of space leads to a discussion of God/religion huh?
I am in awe of the universe and like the clip says, my mind cannot hope to comprehend it, so that naturally turns to thoughts of things bigger and or outside ourselves which is where the God/religion thing comes in.
As Klav will tell you, I'm a believer, but hopefully respectful of other's beliefs. After all if we knew, it wouldn't be belief, would it?
But if there is a God, then he remains God, no matter what we believe about her, or no matter what sort of whacky belief systems we've invented to try and comprehend God.

In case anyone has forgotten, (what this topic is really about), yep I absolutely am amazed when I look up at the stars at night, ( We have no lights around us so the stars are brilliant), and to think how it all started etc etc and what lies way way out there, it is mind boggling. I for one just cant comprehend how "space" never ends.

I remember being around 8 years old on family camping trips...I used to get into these deep conversations with my mom looking up at the stars. I'd ask her, "But just how big is the universe?" "Infinite...it goes on forever" she would say. We can almost sort out in our minds what an infinite number is...Well, it's sufficiently large to make a specific result in an equation and we move on... "But what's on the other side of the universe?" "Is this just one universe in a fish tank of hundreds of universes? "...Are there hundreds of fish tanks full of hundreds of universes?" "...and where are all these fish tanks kept...how big must THAT universe be??" We asked lots of questions, would have some very memorable conversations, but really wouldn't solve much. More questions led to more questions.
Some of these great memories and lingering questions led me to take a few astronomy classes at UCLA. I got the answers to MANY of those early questions. For one, I learned that the universe is expanding outward in every direction. Okay...expanding into WHAT? UG. Truly mind boggling. :scratch_one-s_head:
There are things I will never understand in my lifetime and that's just fine. I can live a great life and be a good human understanding 80% of it all (if I'm lucky) and just move on. As Benjamin Franklin said, "We don't need to understand gravity in order to preserve our fine china...just keep a good grip on it."
I've also learned in life that a quote has more validity if you claim that Benjamin Franklin said it.
Cap'n Ron. . .
Ron you have explained the reasoning behind the question and the wonder perfectly! I understand stars, solar systems, even black holes (eventually), BUT, a never ending void that is "space", lol. Yeah..."Endless space in all directions"...that will really twist your mind!
When I look up at the stars here in the northern hemisphere, I'm gazing off in a different direction than you are...The fact that we recognize named constellations is evidence that man has always looked out and made a connection to the stars...and I imagine...wondered what's beyond.
The first long night passage I made in a sailboat was out of San Diego around 20 years ago. We left at around 10:00pm for three days at sea with four souls on board...Two of which immediately went to sleep in the v-berth leaving myself and my girlfriend at the time to sort out helm, navigation and watch tasks for the next eight hours. With the curvature of the earth, we lost sight of land-based lights an hour or so outside of Point Loma and we were truly on our own. It was a clear, moonless night and the stars were spectacular! I was following a GPS and occasionally checking the compass heading to keep us on course. That would then turn to just following the compass and gazing up at Orion. My girlfriend had fallen asleep and now it was just me and Orion out on the open water in the pitch black night. I would look up at Orion, then down at the compass, then back at Orion. It's position in the night sky...as long as I kept it in the same spot, was as reliable as the compass for keeping me on the proper heading. Through the long night, Orion and I became good friends. He was always there for me, showing me the way and giving me some comfort knowing I wasn't alone.
One of my goals is to be sailing at night and see the Southern Cross. Of course that would mean being in your part of the world.

Lots of talk about the stars these days. The nature of reality blah blah blah... This guy: Nassim Haramein has a new model for a unified field theory that is making some of the more traditional astro physicists uncomfortable....check out the Resonance Project to go deeper. On the surface some new age bullshit but the science is real and it turns some widely held beliefs upside down.....

Laying on my back looking into the New Mexican sky as a kid in Alamogordo I was filled with the wonder and vastness of the Universe. The fact that I grew up to be a secularist/scientist and wary of supernaturalisms of all sorts does not diminish that sense of awe. The sheer unlikelihood of things that happen every day is mind boggling.
pick up a speck of dirt.
What are the odds that of all the specks of dirt on Earth you would have that picked particular one.
Pick a molecule of oxygen now in your lungs. In what star do you suppose it was born and of all the oxygen molecules in the Universe what a mind-blower it is that these two should end up getting stuck on a carbon molecule in your body.
You don't need magic to be amazed.
No, you sure don't,

Its interesting how the bible is so irrelevant that it needs to be banned in most countries on earth. Honestly in my experience if somethings a joke and people take it seriously you promote that "joke". Don't ban it. Yet if your found with a bible in Muslim or communist country you go to prison or are shot on sight. Hence the mocking cartoon. If I was anti bible and thought it a joke heck i would be promoting it everywhere.
What a lot of shit you wrote,Vsekvsek.
"Yet if your found with a bible in Muslim or communist country you go to prison or are shot on sight."
" banned in most countries on earth"
"go to prison or are shot on sight"
There's around 196 countries.
Name those 98 plus Muslim or Communist country where you categorically state that "you go to prison or are shot on sight."
Go on, name them or did you just pull that out of your arse?

Truth!..... But, can you imagine the level of Nirvana one could achieve if a Big black Homo Erectus From Walking Man Brewing had been placed there? Oh, the Rapture. :nyam2:
Google result is that in recent history 3 countries once banned the bible: China, Afghanistan (under the Taliban) and Kuwait but the only country that currently bans the Bible is North Korea. North Korea bans all religious texts.
Currently the most banned book is Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" - a fatwa is still out for his head BTW. Those religious folks are TOUCHY.
.
You can get shot for being a Christian, Jew, Moslem, Sikh, member of one of many African tribes, and (probably) a big black homo erectus, if you go to the right (wrong?) spot.
BTW, that preacher guy sure has a nice watch. I always wondered what the attraction some folks have for white-trash con-men.
Dunno, ask Steve Kelly.

thanks CanDman, nothing wrong with teamwork ;)....the sound really sucked on my version, I knew that but it was all I had. Yes, I know you're a Tull fan, me too. Have been for since the Aqualung album days and heck their drummer's last name was same as mine and he was good! Best concert I ever saw was them in 79', a night to remember for more reasons than one :wacko3:....rock on.
Louie
79.....You lucky dawg.....I believe that's when Tull was at it's best....76-79 were there best years in my opinion. Sad to have lost John Glasscock ......but I think Mr. Barlow hadn't left yet. Now you have to tell me why it was your best night.......what was her name and what happened......? (popcorn)
Kev - yes I was lucky to catch Tull in that era and I agree it was their best times. I saw them 1 or 2 times years later and it wasn't close to the perfection of that night. And yes Barriemore was on the drums. It was the Stormwatch tour and Oct 30th, 1979 is when I saw them in Nashville, I still have the T-shirt.
2 unique things happened I'll never forget. While enjoying the show me and my friend keep smelling this funky sweet smell. Even though we had our own grass stash we were convinced someone was smoking hashish and we were very envious  We keep looking around trying to find our new best friend but just got back looks. The smell drove us crazy, it was very strong and wouldn't go away and we were convinced it hash, hey we had experience with that smell!!!. Finally half way thru the show I saw smoke coming up between us. He had stuck his leather jacket down between our seats and in passing back and forth the doobie we were sharing apparently the fire fell out of it and landed on his leather jacket and slowly burned a hole in it the size of a dime while creating ' the smell ' :negative:
Things 'perked up' a little after the show. I'm driving setting in traffic and a car stopped beside me in left lane even though there was no car in front of it. I looked over and it was an old Cadillac with 3 people in front seat. The girl by the window looked just like Valerie Bertinelli and I honestly thought it was her until I saw the huge boobs in a halter top. As she rolled the window down she gave me the smile of a lifetime and said 'Hi". She then took down her halter top and laid up on top of the door the 2 most beautiful, big, perfect & most rememorable things I'd ever seen in my 18 years of life and giving me that smile. I can imagine the stunned/stoned look on my face, they then speed away laughing. A line of cars came behind them so I could not pull out and I lost them at next red light. All the concerts and other shit I've forgotten through the years would be enough to fill up IBM's memory tank but that night is clearly etched in my mind and it started with a great rock & roll show.
Louie....(Legal Disclamier: Hey this was 1979!!!! haha :bye: :mocking:
