Title: Labor
Post by: 1200man on January 24, 2014, 11:07:27 AM
Can anyone give me an ideal how much it would cost to get a new starter installed in a 89 FJ1200?

Thanks,

If you can get a Yamaha dealer to touch an FJ, I would be shocked. Most of them won't work on any thing older than 10 years old. So then, you need to find an independent cycle repair shop you can trust.  I can tell you this, I can swap a starter out on a FJ 1200 in less than 30 minutes without even trying to.  All the tools you need will easily fit in one hand.
I think I can safely say that  you are going to pay at least 1 hour of the shop rate of whatever shop you can find that will work on your FJ.

Now would be the perfect time to upgrade to the 4 brush starter, Randy at RPM has them available on his website.

True. I may be slower though.

Seriously, changing out the starter is really not that hard to do yourself. Do a search in the Parts for Sale area. There's a source there for cheap starters, if they are still for sale. Not sure of their quality though.

PS, if you're not mechanically inclined, or don't want to work on your FJ yourself, you may want to learn, or find something else. The older FJ's can be a labor of love.  :good2:

Contact fellow member 'fintip'. He is in your area and may be able to assist you.

Our local shop rate is $90- an hour. That would pay for a LOT of beer and any wrenches you might have to buy. You're not splitting the cases, so this should be a D.I.Y. job. If Fintip can't stop by, don't worry, everybody here will talk you through it.
(FWIW: from what I've seen of the local Yamaha dealer, I'd only let them work on a psycho ex-girlfriend's bike. I'd trust them that much!)

Did someone say my name?

Send me a message. We can do it. If you're set on a shop, I know *one* that I would trust to do it. If it's an hour of labor, I think they charge $75.
