Title: Winter Powder coating
Post by: aviationfred on January 23, 2014, 09:09:50 PM
With the cold weather set in and only periodic warm days to ride. Some powder coating is in order.

I had my set of RPM Vibranators done.

I also did the rear GSXR750 wheel to match the color of the front FZR750R wheel

Got the wheel installed and ready to ride in the morning. Temps are suppose to be near 60 degrees in the afternoon.

I like to identify the White and Silver colors as the stealth mode colors, but others (our resident Power Ranger included  :flag_of_truce:) have made many references to this color scheme being theft deterrent colors.

Fred, the Ambulance :empathy3: riders apparently think the preferred red/silver combo is actually less desireable, hence the theft deterrence.   :rofl2:

The Red and White are easy to identify as ambulance colors, the other colors not so much. Not sure how the theft deterrent got started but much like the Red Power Ranger moniker it stuck. Other than a Pink stripe the other years are left in obscurity, just plane old FJ's... Boring...  :bomb:

Unlike other model specific forums, we for the most part are a friendly group and as such, the in jest banter is there.

The Red Power Ranger moniker, (I believe it may have something to do with some forgotten boots). The Pink Stripers, The lovely design engineers of the early 90's. Do we all remember the purplish pink Kawasaki ZX600 and the pastel purple and grey Suzuki RF900? The 89' Theft deterrent colored FJ has been embraced, at least by me. I do remember as a new member I made a reference as the colors being stealth mode and was told that I got it wrong. That the White/Silver is Theft Deterrent Colored.

FTFY

The Red and White are easy to identify as ambulance prototype FJs whose highest and best use was to perfect the later models colors, the other colors not so much. Not sure how the theft deterrent got started but much like the Red Power Ranger moniker it stuck. Other than a Pink stripe the other years are left in obscurity, just plane old FJ's... Boring...  :bomb:

The 'theft-deterrent' descriptor was coined by an (apparently myopic) and jealous prototype owner back on the old Netpath FJ list, IIRC.

You forgot the Periwinkle colored rear wheel.... I think theft deterrent is damn funny, but it is Red and White, I like the colors.... You can paint an FJ any color and it is still an FJ. You can also put lipstick on a pig, it might be a bit of a struggle though... Now that I think of it a previous 86' owner was forced to own a newer model of FJ but decided to return to his true colors, let me see if I can find a pic of his new ride...

I found it...

I thought the was scientific evidence that white and silver, for some reason deters theft. The opposite of, If you put something down shiny, it will get stolen.

Besides, it's in Fred's signature line. It's gotta be true.

I agree that he was not mentally sound.... When he got married that is, but he was clear minded the year before when he chose the proper colors for his two wheel ride... His chosen also rides so I have give credit to that as well. Your case is flawed...

the wheel looks nice Fred, those pics helped me make up my mind on how I want to go forward coating mine. Do you know the brand name, color & color # of the powder coating you used? Also, where did you find that tank bra? nice.

thanks

I misunderstood the thread title.  I thought the powder coating referred to the new layer of snow on my driveway

Well, seeing as though my new wife is actually an "ambulance driver" (she says "up in Kanada we call them Paramedics"), it was only natural that I should paint my 91/86 FJ red and white! Now the sound mind is debatable...she is wife #2... :dash2: At least this one rides a motorcycle!

The shock adjustment chain looks great.  :good2:

This is the similar to the drive chain that I have.

I couldn't find any information about who makes that chain in that ad.  Although they claim a 9850 lb tensile strength.
Is it generic or a major brand?  I'd be real careful if it's a generic.
It could very well be a Harbor Freight chain.  :-(

I gotta paint my chain. :cray: I can't see any problem with them if your not smoking the tires all the time or power shifting constantly. Back when I was 25, I drove my bike hard. At 57, that chain would suit my fine.

Wheels look great Fred.  I thing a white :sarcastic: chain would be better.
