Title: 30th Anniversary Central FJ Rally
Post by: aviationfred on January 09, 2014, 06:21:30 PM
I would like to see what interest there would be in a Central U.S. FJ Rally. I have contacted the Hub Motorcycle Resort in Dogpatch Arkansas. http://www.hubinfo.com/. (http://www.hubinfo.com/.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0jsvDViQqY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0jsvDViQqY)

I have tentatively blocked off 10 Hotel rooms for July 17th-19th. As with the WCR, arrival time is Thursday and departure is Sunday.

Rooms are $66.00 a night for a multiple night stay. A tent site is $10.00 a night/$5.00 a night for a 2nd person with access to a shower room.

I rode in the Ozarks this past September and found the ride is an E-Ticket thrill. For those that have ridden in the Rockies or the California mountains, these roads are much more technical and require full attention at all times. Definitely an Adrenalin rush.

This has moved from interest to actually going to happen.

Hopefully we can get some Left and Right coasters to attend. Imagine the stories you can tell about riding in Hill Billy country...

Fred,
Count me in. I live about a hour and a half from the Hub. I can surely have a functional FJ by then. :sarcastic:

If you don't, I could trailer both of mine and you could use one.

The Hub is only 600 miles from me so if/when there's another I plan on making it. :good2:

I rode the Ozarks on my ATVs. At Chadwick Missouri. Also some of the most technical trails I've ever been on. A lot of trials bikes being ridden there. A challenge on a raptor.

Can't wait to ride the roads on my Fj.

Thanks for doing this

Giant, so would a utility quad be preferred over the Raptor?  What was the issue?  (not intending to hijack this thread, we can move this topic over to dirt)...

Alot of off camber steps, and steep technical climbs. Fourwheel drive you can crawl over things 2wheel drive raptor you have to use a lot of momentum.

Peeps, I voted a maybe, since I will have time off on those dates, but since I'm 2,000 miles away, that's where the maybe comes in. My summers are always full of unplanned excitement, so maybe is the best I can do today.

So, Fred, does this mean you're not doing the 5-state Harley parade?  :-)

I'd be interested, but mid-July can be awefully hot in Arkansas, even up in the mountains (most of which are less than 2000 ft elev).  I've been there several times in early June and it can be hot even then.  I've stayed at The Hub before, excellent location for getting to the best roads.  The rooms are spartan (but all I need is a bed and a bathroom).  Owners were real nice.

Yes I am still doing the 5-State ride in early May.

With the other Rallys having set dates, and the availability of rooms at The Hub. My choice of dates were limited. Yes, I agree the temps may be on the warm side. I would much rather ride in hot than cold.

If you are worried about being hot just wear chaps, a leather vest and nosepicker gloves..............

.........and no, I'm not serious. I leave that gear to the cruisers. Just remember to bring a hydration backpack.

On the Colorado Rally, I had 2 complete sets of riding gear. On Friday it was a cool day and I wore my leathers. Saturday was a warmer day and I wore my mesh gear.

Here is some more information for those that are interested/are attending. Push Mountain Road http://motorcycleroads.com/75/34/Arkansas/Push-Mountain-Road.html (http://motorcycleroads.com/75/34/Arkansas/Push-Mountain-Road.html) Is a very well known road for motorcycles.

This next road is also well known. The Pig Trail http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/20/Arkansas/Arkansas-Pig-Trail---Arkansas-23.html (http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/20/Arkansas/Arkansas-Pig-Trail---Arkansas-23.html)

Butler Maps has their Ozarks map now available for $14.95 at their website www.butlermaps.com (http://www.butlermaps.com)

Another website that has maps and routes for the area is www.touringthe (http://www.touringthe) ozarks.com. It is more cruiser oriented, but they have most of the good loops listed as well.

If anyone is interested, I will snail mail them an official Arkansas state highway map. Just drop me a PM with your mailing address & I will have one headed your way.

Push Mountain is awesome, a MUST ride!
The Pig Trail isn't worth it, that is the only 3 miles worth doing.
ARK21 is much better as is everything around Jasper.

Here is another source of routes and info. The only thing I found incorrect was refering to Push Mountain Road as Hwy. 314 instead of 341. No big deal.

Looks like you're going to have to choose which ride to participate in.  Choose Push Mountain for the all day ride!

If you do one of the half day rides, choose the Ark Grand Canyon.  I believe that's actually ARK374 which will get you to Mt Judea and ARK123 (great road!)

Here is a 2nd option for a Rally shirt. I did this as a single shirt option so there is no minimum amount to buy. As with the 30th anniversary shirt, the interest of the Tuning Fork logo has been incorporated as well as the FJowners FJ. Price is $31.05 a shirt.

Thanks! Hold off on orders everyone, more updates to come...

Will be likely adding RPM's logo (pending approval), and will be...

correcting AK to AR (derp)
Listing the rallies in order of date of occurrence
(possibly) putting the dates in a column to the side of the locations.

Also still open to other suggestions.

Every image I post is clickable and brings you to a page where it can be purchased, but again! Do not purchase yet! It is not the final version! I'll delete the current one soon.

In the meantime, does anyone want to help by listing the dates of the rallies? Hunting them down is a little difficult, the forum doesn't always play nicely with Google searches.

Trying to get all the proper info to finish up my rally shirt...

March 8-10 Australia Rally
May 15-18 Boone ECSR
May 29-31 Willits WCR
July 17-20 Dogpatch Central Rally
July 25-27 Lake Placid, NY (?) NESR
Sep 19-21 Tellico ECFR

Does this look right?

Also did a little more editing, reddened the reds just a tad more...

I got out for a short scouting ride this morning. The recent rain has done a pretty good job of washing off the sand, there is occasional gravel in some  of the corners,  kicked up on the road  by trailers. The only  thing that I found a little concerning was some mud  tracked onto the road by log trucks,  but it's not that bad at all.

I would love to return to Arkansas for this.  When I rode down to Texas last year, I made it a point to try and slow it down for a couple of days to tour. We managed to do some, but our plans were delayed a bit so we couldn't spend as much time as we liked.

Unfortunately I can't make this trip this year, but for anyone who is hummin'n'hawin' about whether to go, you can take a gander at these videos, if you haven't seen them yet.  I posted them about six months ago in the Travel Reports section.  These are east then south of the Dogpatch area, but well within the touring area. Many of you have probably ridden these roads before. For those who haven't been to the Arkansas area, it's well worth it.  Hopefully you'll find some better food than we did too.

Have fun!

Just in case anybody is wondering, the roads in Arkansas are clean and Push Mountain Road is still there. Just finished making 2 full passes of Push Mountain, nearly had the whole thing to myself, up until I got to the south end on my last pass. Weather is awesome, 80* and low humidity. This is going to be a blast!

I'm really looking forward to it.

Spent some time last night looking at possible routes. Does anyone have any suggestions coming from Orlando, FL?  (I've seen enough of I-75 recently!)

Haven't done an Iron Butt on this bike yet. Google showed a couple of possible routes that would qualify for the distance, just have to make the time!

Will probably tent it for lodging.

A friend told me that I should see Eureka Springs while I'm up there. He spoke very highly of the architecture.

Steve,
Eureka Springs is a pretty little town, there is nearly no level ground and it is fairly old for this part of the world, so I would say that is has made for some interesting architecture. Not far outside ES, there is a small modern chapel called Thorncrown Chapel that is simply stunning in its architecture. Their website is thorncrown.com

Fred,
I came out amazingly well, the only thing that hurts is my left elbow. I don't think I actually slid on the pavement, we parted ways in the ditch. The nearest house is about 50 yards down the road from where I crashed, the fella that lived there hopped on his fourwheeler and came down to see what happened. He said they usually have 5 or 6 motorcycles crash there every summer, he said most of them wind up in the trees. Yay me... :dash1: If I can get my son's Ninja running, tagged and insured before then I will be at the Rally. Pretty sure I won't have the FJ running by then, unless I run it streetfighter style. I don't usually like "streetfighters" anyway.....

Went on a ride for disabled veterans yesterday. Found out the 86 windscreen works great for defecting deer. Puts them right up into your chest and helmet. That hurt.
This is what a cherry 86 looks like before deer killing

I'm really sore today. Left hand, left leg, both shoulders, neck and back. Luckily it wasn't one of the 200lb ERS  that lurk around here. They said it was probably 100+ when they dragged it off the road. Didnt even look at the deer.  Too worried about my bike. And luckily I was riding with Harley guys, was only going about 50mph. The guy behind me said I didn't even wobble when it bounced off me. After he asked if I was ok. He said he wanted to shake the hand of the man of steel. I just gripped hard, braced, and pushed forward to meet him for the impact. I made up my mind I wasn't going to come off my bike. When I reported it. I wasn't sure what county I was in. And ended up talking to2 different ones. And they both asked if I got hurt or hit anything when I came off the bike. They were surprised when I said I didn't.

I know this should possibly be posted in the Riding Gear threads, but I want to aim this at the riders who will be attending the Central Rally.

The afternoon temps can reach into the mid 90's. I would highly recommend getting a Cool Vest to wear during the rides Friday and Saturday. They are fairly inexpensive and work very well at keeping your core body temp regulated. For those that have a Cycle Gear store nearby, they have them on sale at the moment. Here is an example from eBay.

Well, it looks like I am a definite maybe for Friday and Saturday at the rally. I had to cancel my vacation on Wed and Thurs to go to Fort Worth, TX, but will be back Thursday night. I pulled the busted plastics off of the Bruise, all I have to do is get mirrors and front turn signals put on and I will be good to go.  Oh, yeah and get the new tires and wheels put on. I received the rear caliper parts that I have been waiting on, I think that is the last things I am needing to get the rear wheel mounted up. I'm quite sure the rear Avon won't last a weekend in the hills at this point. Dang, this bike is ugly with the fairing off..... :bad:

Post by: Steve_in_Florida on July 13, 2014, 06:05:34 AM

Fellow riders,
I'm really looking forward to this rally. Ark-Kansas is a part of the country I have little knowledge of, other than chatting with some who have been there.

Initial plan is to "Iron-Butt it" to the rally location by a yet-to-be-determined route. I've seen too much of I-75 into Georgia recently, and my motorcycle ride map is missing a few states. Of course, staying to known major roads might be beneficial in a distance/endurance test.

Additionally, I get distracted!

It will be nice to see any and all who might show up.

Packing now, making last minute checks.

Have to mow the lawn...

Well crap.  I skipped this rally because July in Arkansas is usually really hot.  I was there a few weeks ago in June and it was borderline miserable.  Somewhat better in the mountains, but it was threatening rain and the humidity was about 120%.

I hope you guys have a good time and the weather holds.  Any storms should have moved out by Thursday.

Here are some definite gotta-do rides from the Hub:
This is a nice 1/2 day ride..

From Jasper, take 74 east to 123 south in Piercetown.  Continue south on 123 through Mt Judea and look for the right turn just past Mt Judea.  Take 123 all the way to HWY 7.

South on 7 to Pelsor.  The southern part of 123 from HWY 7 (Pelser) to Hagertown is a lot of fun.  A few miles past Hagertown take 292 west to HWY 21 (Ludwig) and go back north (right).  If it's lunchtime be sure to stop for one of the best burgers in the US at Ozone Burger in the small town of Ozone on HWY 21.  Don't blink or you'll miss it.

After lunch, continue north on 21 to 43.  It's a Y intersection, stay right.  Take 43 to 74 and go right at the bridge.  Go east on 74 for a fun ride over the mountains and wind up back in Jasper.  From there you'll probably want to do 123 through Mt Judea again.

You've got to do Push Mountain also.  From the Hub, you have 2 choices.
The fun (long) way:  South on HWY 7, left on 374 to 123.  123 south through Mt Judea again (it really is worth it) all the way to HWY 7.  South on 7 to Pelsor then east (left) on HWY 16 to 27.  Take 27 north to Marshall.  27 north/east out of Marshall (watch for LEO on this road) to 14 at Harriet.  Right/east on 14 (good road!) through Big Flat.  A few miles out of Big Flat is 341 (Push Mountain road!).  You'll want to do this as many times as possible (it's 30 miles I think).  There's a good burger joint at the 3-way intersection just west of Big Flat.

The short way: North on 7 and take 206 over to HWY 65.  Jog south on 65 to east 62.  At Yellville, take 14 south to Harriet.  From Harriet follow direction above.

I would recommend the long way over to 341 and the short way back home.

Eureka Springs is a nice town, but not worth riding to.  The roads are nice, but they are always crowded.  Better to stick to the lesser travelled roads.

And whatever you do, DO NOT SPEED on HWY 7!  It's a Harley road and the state makes a lot of income with speed traps on that road.

Have Fun and ride safe!

Have a safe ride, see you tomorrow.

I am on my way, I stopped in Tulsa, Ok to visit some friends. I am only 200 miles from the Rally, I should be at the Hub by noon.

steve_in_florida and I have both made it to the Hub. Steve got his Iron Butt completed on his newest FJ. Waiting for a few others to arrive.

Thanks for letting a FJR crash your Rally.  I had a great time talking with you and learning all about the great FJ.  You guys are commended for keeping those beautiful bikes in riding shape.

Well, I JUST made it back, safe and sound.

Spent last night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as I wasn't up to doing a second Iron Butt on the return trip.

Great place, with awesome people.

Fred, you should be commended for putting together an OUTSTANDING rally! You reflect great credit on yourself, and the FJ Owners forum. Now reach around and pat yourself on the back.
