Title: 2014 NESR
Post by: CanDman on January 07, 2014, 12:18:24 PM
Since an Aussie got the ball rolling for this years WCR, I thought I might get things rolling for this years NESR. Personally, I think it would be a good idea if we did Bethel again.......now wait......hang on........hang on...........then for those who show up to this years rally, we can bring suggestions to the rally for the next year and the group can vote on it at the last nights campfire and the decision will be final !!!!!  I don't need to remind everyone how invaluable Bob and Travis's contribution to the rally's are. Hopefully both are willing and able to be a part of this years anniversary event. Now the last weekend in July is the 26th and 27th. I hope I don't need to remind everyone that this is an anniversary year and I believe it will be a smashing repeat of 2012. I can look into finding a sponsor for the event.....Yamaha Canada is located here in Toronto and I am sure I could rally some interest. Bob and Trav....PM me and lets put this thing together.

Tell who, what? If you want a NEFJ-R or a FJ-R, start one period, don't piss and moan someone else hasn't started it. Travis and I started it, it don't mean we are the only ones that can, and or we should be the ones to continue it.

I can not go when everyone wants it, so why would I set it up. My racing business is way to busy then, and no one wanted it where I suggested so it didn't happen. :bad: Thou I did get to see 1/4 or the rally there.  :good2:

I love the NEFJR, but it's not the Travis and Bob rally it's a FJ rally for all to ride. :drinks:

Rant over back to regular programing.

Bob...take it easy buddy!!! no one is pissing and moaning at you !!!! Take another look  ......I did start this thread and I was prepared to organize it......but my disappointment stems from a lack of interest from the whole group..... If you recall , where you and I left things, you were going to get back to me and let me know what weekend you were available....so I could to come and see you.....rally or not....but that never happened.... :unknown: there.......counter rant over....back to our regularly scheduled NOTHING !!!!!!!!!   :hang1:

We, for me, the 'Travis and Bob' part of the rallies I attended were some of the best parts  :good2:

And I'm trying to keep my schedule open for any upcoming group rides, but work will be crazy busy this summer.
Hopefully a few of us will be able to get together.

YEAHHH A Flicker.......you know I am interested......I did a few roads in the Adirondacks...which were awesome...I mentioned earlier Lake Placid only because it's a lot closer for any Canucks like Whitby Bob and myself to be able to make it.
Having taken the 15,000 KM trip to the Australian rally, I can honestly say that 2 nights was not quite enough.....all who attended said one more night would have been perfect !!! Anyway, I do plan to do a lot of riding this year and I look forward to meeting up with as many of you as I can. Hope we can put something together....I miss you guys.... :praising:

Ok then.....it is Official

......after several conversations with Glenn, we have decided to hold the 30th anniversary on traditionally the same weekend. On the weekend of July 25,26 and 27, we will be holding the 2014 30th An NESR in the Lake Placid area. That is about 6-8 hours for you Ontario and Quebec attendees. Glenn will be posting the exact location very shortly and PM's will be going out soon with all the details. Any and all questions should be posted or PM'd to either myself or Glenn. I have done only a few roads of those mountains and let me assure you they are awesome !!!!! Vermont is not far and may be one of the rides. Hope to see you there  :good2:

I didn't see a date listed in your post. Actually I got the impression from your post that you were to busy too make it at all  (regardless of the date). My bad, sorry.

Last year was months of waiting, incorrect assumptions , and indecision. Personally I love the area we have used for the last rallies. This year I thought it might be nice to meet in an area that is a little more central to our group. Kev and I thought that it was important to get a date and area posted as soon as possible. I know my weekends are getting booked up quickly.

I have probably looked at what seems like a hundred web pages and have come up with a short list of possibilities. The hope is to find a large cabin or suite for a HQ, with rooms available for who ever decides to attend. I would like to make an initial reservation in the next week or so.

I'm looking forward to some nice riding in unfamiliar mountains, some good food (and drink), and telling some lies.  :yahoo:

Ok......so here it is.....the weekend of the 25 and 26th of July. We have 11 rooms reserved including the apartment (sleeps 6) at the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake Village New York. You have until the 20th of April to reserve a room. It is 40,50 or 60 bucks per night per person based on double occupancy.... less if you add another person. There are a few lakeview rooms available and it is first come first serve. There are all sorts of facilities and amenities including airplane rides. These rooms won't last.....remember there is a cancellation policy, so don't hymn and haw...book and inform Margie that you are part of the FJ OWNERS group of reserved rooms. If something comes up and you have to cancel...you won't be penalized as long as you adhere to their cancellation policy !! Looking forward to seeing some old friends and meeting some new ones. There is a bar within the Hotel including kitchen and the water is just across the road. The riding , I hear is amazing !!!!    :yahoo: See you there...... :drinks:

Note that for much of the Adirondack park, there is no cell phone coverage.  Only in the bigger towns/ cities like Lake Placid/ Tupper Lake etc.  I do not know about the Long Lake area.  Just a point of observation to pass along.

Now that we have a base camp, I'll start mapping out some routes. I have ridden some of the area east and northeast of there. I will pre-ride some of it before July. Long Lake is a nice area, with plenty of food/drink at this resort and within walking distance. It is central to a lot of epic views and riding. Hope to see some old and new faces there............... :drinks:

The cost of 40,50 or 60 is a bit misleading so let me make it clear. We have reserved 11 rooms including the 3 bedroom apartment. All the prices are per room per night. So attendees can pay anywhere from 25 dollars per night all the way up to 125 dollars per night depending on you want to spend. If you want to join us and are looking for a roomy....please speak up and talk it out. It is not going to happen by its self  :scratch_one-s_head:......no need to be shy......we all have one.......an FJ that is.....  :mocking:

So I unfortunately cannot commit at this point. I would love to join you guys. However I have a week long ride planned for the end of June beginning of July. I could easily do this in a day from Viagara. So it is not a definite no, just a maybe. It sucks when people don't respond or commit. I understand. Game time decision.

Not to worry Johnnie, there are 2 rooms that are already booked so far and from the look of things, your situation is not unusual. I might just tie up the apartment which can sleep between 6 and 10....and that way, last minute or last second atendees will have a place to lay their heads. As soon as the pool opens, I will schedule a BBQ right away....that will definitely open the door for new attendees. Thanks for the post.....just need few more riders and we can officially call it a Rally...... :yahoo:

Well, I had hoped to make it happen.

July 27 is my mom's 79th birthday. I tried to find another day to visit, but neither the week before nor after is open.
She lives in Windsor, so I'll be heading west instead of east.

So, have a great ride everyone. Sorry I'll be missing it.

Yeah thanks Glen and CanDman I move to NC and now you decide to have a rally in the Adirondacks. LOL. Wish I could make it to the rally. I have a friend in Tupperlake with a FJR and he would have been happy to show us all the fun twisty roads. I know he took me for one hell of a ride last year. But on a good note I will get to attend the ECSR in Boone NC for the first time in like 4 years and if any of you haven't ridden down south here you really need to attend. There are some of the best twisty roads I have ever ridden down here. Plus the pavement is in better condition do to the mild winters. Well good luck guys with you rally and be safe out there.  :yahoo:

I asked her to extend out deadline so please give her a call and hold the room....if you have to cancel....you can still do that 2 weeks before and get your deposit back. Even if you give her a deposit of 50 bucks I am quite sure she will hold a room. ...not sure my ass can do a 6-8 hr. run without being crippled...got bad Neck and shoulders,

I have a bad back and neck. At times I can barely walk and can be laid up for weeks at a time. Ironically, one of the few things I can do without aggravating it when it's bad, is ride the FJ. Even if I have the greatest difficulty getting on and off it, riding it does not seem to irritate it and I am quite comfortable.
I have occasionally managed day long rides where I have required assistance getting on and off the bike, finding it physically impossible to do so by myself, but none the worse for it after.

If you're not used to rides of that duration, give a go, the worst you can do is end up stiff and sore. There are potions to be consumed after a day in the saddle that can alleviate these symptoms. Long rides make for much better memories and stories.

The riding position of the FJ is very easy on backs. I can't vouch for the condition of your arse though. I only get a sore bum from my thin summer pants and a small lambswool pad on the seat fixes that. I'm 60, unfit and regularly ride 700km days, it's easy of the FJ.

Unlike many here, I don't have a problem with the standard seat. I try to never ride more than 2 hours without a short break, 5 minutes is enough.

Get out of your comfort zone!

I've been accused of faking it a few times when I was down in the back and chose the FJ as transportation over my cages.
No one believes me when I tell them it's the easiest of the lot on my back...

There have been a few times when just couldn't drive, even if I could move my leg/foot to the brake pedal I couldn't apply any pressure. Even in this state I could still ride. If not too bad I would just pull up next to something raised to make getting on and off easier or at worst, have two people load me on and off, one to hold the bike, the other one to slowly lift my leg and help me on. This never failed to get some odd looks from bystanders.
The only time it was a problem was pulling up at a roadside stop and as I went to put my foot down I was struck with a bolt of pain in my lower back akin to a jab with a white hot poker causing me to freeze momentarily and fall over. I was by myself and had to wait for someone to stop (not long) and lift the bike off me.
Fortunately, this level of back problem is not a constant one, and if I'm careful gives me little grief, but when it does I'm down big time. I work for myself, so no work, no money.

Another option in lodging is the Lake Eaton campground (NY state). I booked a tent site there (three days) for a total of $84. I am well set up for camping off my bike, and enjoy sleeping in a tent rather than a hotel. It is 2.7 miles from the hotel. There are still 40 or so sites still available, and room at my site for a tent or two.

I have gotten some good local info on the roads. I am stringing them together with some food and rest stops.   :bye2:

You're not staying at the hotel with the rest of us?

They didn't have any 8' beds.....I also heard through the wooded forest that the camp site is paying him to wear a big furry suite and run around the forest after dark ... :mocking:

Sadly, Dan, myself and Glen have decided to reschedule this years rally to next year........so those of you who were on the fence about making it this summer can go ahead with whatever else is on your plates. I know there is genuine interest and enthusiasm among the members this side of the continent... to meet and hang out, it's just not in the cards yet. Hopefully next year, this event will catch fire again. Having been to this years Australian Rally I can speak from personal experience.  Rally's like these.....and by that I mean FJ Rally's are the best anywhere in the world.....I have never met a finer bunch of people who not only work hard but they are people who still love to play hard. Meeting the members of both the NESR and the Australian anniversary Rally has been awesome experience's for me and I have been inspired by so many great folks. I sincerely hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting more of you in the very near future ....enjoy your summer everyone and ride safe........ :drinks:

Sorry to hear about the Rally being postponed. I have read and seen plenty of photos about the great times to be had at the ECFR. I will be attending that Rally in 2015.

Kev,

You could throw some bags on Candy and come join us for a ride through hillbilly country next week. Central Rally in Arkansas

Hey thanks Fred and Scott.......I suppose I should also come clean...I have been trying not be a kill joy so I have not been entirely forthright and open about some things going on.....I had such a perfect plan for myself in November of last year........I was sailing along wonderfully and everything was perfect..... I was going to go to Australia.....hang out for a month....come back home to my job (waiting for me........my crew was able to keep working for me with the contractor who hired me while I was away-arrangements were made).....so I was supposed to be making money even while I was away. I planned to come home.....in March.......go get Candy's new modified port and polished engine drop her off and have her ready for May(she was ready only last October so it made not sense to throw the engine in her just b4 before winter's arrival  :mail1:)
Then something happened while I was on vacation........I came off the Blue Tuna...not a big deal right? Wrong....... !!!!!! I came home to find out my crew had quit the day I left.....and I was unable to return to work for 6-8 weeks minimum.....no problem right? Wrong.......my Union......declined me short term disability because it happened while I was on holidays !! So I have had to play goalie until I was fit to return to work (zero income for the last 4 months!!!!).......I got clearance from the Doctor 3 weeks ago........ So then it was time to put a new crew together and then find a house........so  after posting ads for finding a new crew.....and then finding a new Contractor.....I was finally able to put it all together.......and started working again on 2 new houses a week ago.......the shoulder has been stubborn.....but we are finally able to swing the ole mallet again........ :good:
So......in closing.........CanD should be ready to ride by the middle of August ( I miss here terribly)... and I plan to make up for a lot of lost riding.......I have some priorities that need immediate attention......but I think these storm clouds are finally moving on. I have missed this place and the friends I have made here.....but this whole ordeal has made me a better man !!!
I am finally in a good place again and will enjoy finishing my trip report Down under......It really means a lot to me that you would extend an invite to join you.... I will do my best to one day have the pleasure of meeting up .......thx  :drinks:
Kev
