Title: Introduce myself (new member)
Post by: IN07125 on January 06, 2014, 05:02:41 AM
Hi folks,
I just want to introduce myself here at the FJ1100 owners club. My name is Lars Alfredson alias "Alfred Boy". I'm from Sweden and lives on the west coast in the South part of the country.
I'm 55 year and bought my first FJ 1100 brand new back in 1984 when this bike was hot stuff and test winner in all bike Magazines.
I sold my first FJ 1100 a few years therafter and had a lot of different bikes since that era. Until last summer I found a similar bike for sale not far away from where I live. So, the decision was easy done to go for a Quick check / inspection of this bike. And it was sold to me just after.
The bike is exactly the same as I bought new in 1984, same year model, (the first) same colour red/White. I have just run this bike a few miles, it's good stand but need some attention. The carburetors need to be cleaned / overhaul and sync. No other obvious problem more than the clutch suddenly didn't work. Maybe the oil is poor quality or sticky in between the clutch discs (lamell) in Swedish.

Welcome Lar's !! Glad you found the site. Your bikes sounds great with the normal bugs to be sorted out. Lot's of help here with the carbs. Ask questions as you need or want to. After 30 years it is hard to come up with a problem that someone doesn't have an answer for.
Your clutch problem. To start with you might bleed the slave unit. If it has been leaking then perhaps a rebuild kit if the bore is in good shape. They are also rep lacable for not to much money. They are on e bay and RPM has them in stock also. If the paint is gone or in bad shape around the oil filter then it has at one time leaked or is leaking as the fluid eats the paint.

Stay warm and it's great to have you. Welcome  :good2: :drinks:

Welcome Alfred, the clutch slave is a weak point on the FJ. As George mentioned look for paint damage on the oil filter housing. If pealing or paint is missing then you may have a leak. Check to see if the fluid is low at the master. If not then bleed it, if the clutch works better then expect it to fail again from a small leak. The slave is easy to rebuild. I rebuilt mine a year or two back along with the master. Might as well do both if you are going open the system up. Good time to flush out the lines or better, upgrade to braided lines. I think the change interval for rubber brake lines is every 6 years. Good choice of color by the way, I have an 86' Red & White. Cheers.

Welcome, Alfred.

It seems that you may need to bleed the clutch hydraulic system.  If the clutch slave cylinder is leaking, it can be rebuilt.  If you are not comfortable doing that, or having it rebuilt by competent help, all new (complete) slave cylinders are available for the FJ, at reasonable costs.

If the hydraulic hoses are original to the bike, you may wish to upgrade to Stainless Steel coated hoses.  A local hydraulics shop there can probably manufacture-to-match the hoses that you have, for a modest price.  You might also consider using new Stainless Steel brake hoses, from the same source, in the near future.

Welcome to the madhouse.   :yahoo:

Welcome Lars, isn't life a funny old dog? That FJ was waiting for you.
Yep, Red is spot on ^^^ replace those old oem rubber brake lines. They are long over due.
Safety wire the vacuum petcock (see the Files)
Replace any tires that are over 4 years old.

Welcome home.

Hej Lars!

Nice to see another Swede on here!

I've been away from this forum for a while, too many other things going on, but now I'm trying to catch up!

Do you know any other Swedish FJ owners?

Take care,
Nat
