hi all.ive bought a fj1200 that has been sprayed matt black and carbon fibre wrap stuck on[badly].im going to pull off wrap and respray.before i start pulling.will there be glue left behind?what's the best way to get it off before sanding?will i need to prime if im going to gloss black it?
Hopefully the wrap will come off without leaving any glue residue. I know for other decals that have left a residue, I have used a product called Goof Off. I don't know if it is available in Northern Ireland.
Primer is generally a good idea. Most modern paints are designed to be used with primer of the same brand as your paint. Chemical reactions between the primer and the paint promote better adhesion.

Fred, did you use Goof Off on your ABS plastic? IIRC, it contains acetone, which does not play well with ABS.
For glue residue I would use good old fashioned mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) Stay away from products that contain lacquer thinner and/or acetone. They will melt your ABS plastic.
Skik, if you want it to turn out correctly, gloss black a *very* demanding color. I would plan on multiple coats of primer with block sanding between coats.
I would also recommend a urethane clear coat, not acrylic or certainly not lacquer .
Cheers lad.
thanks lads.pat when you say very demanding color??????
when the black coat is finished i put the decals on then clear coat?is that the way?
I used the Goof Off very sparingly. Poured onto a clean cloth and lightly rubbed on small portions of the glue residue. I used just enough the soften the glue and was able to wipe the glue off without affecting the paint or the ABS.

Ok, good to know Fred, thanks.
Skik, sure clear coat over your decals, no problem.
What I mean is, unless properly prepared, gloss black will show every imperfection, every ripple in the surface, that's why proper surface prep. is important.
Multiple coats of primer/filler with careful block sanding between primer coats, will give you a mirror black result.
Highly polished gloss black paint is absolutely stunning....
A cheap wax will usually remove sticky residue, as will WD-40.
