Title: Altenator cover swap.
Post by: nurse on December 28, 2013, 02:05:32 PM
Having striped and restored my FJ altenator cover, the British weather has beaten me again and the corrosion is starting to creep back.

So I was thinking about something like this off of fleabay :Item #:   230842652213

Does anyone know if the xjr style altenator cover will fit on the fj??

Like you I have the same problem and the same question, those covers with the tuning fork in them look really good.

No, they are different housing and they will not interchange.

Not the answer I was hoping for, but thanks anyway Randy!
You got any tricks up your sleeve for the future on this one Randy?

Anyone else got any ideas/suggestions?  I could try to source a good condition replacement but I was hoping to go for something a bit different!

Could you not replace the whole alternator with an XJR one? (that has a cover of course)

In the process you would get a newer alternator and a nice looking cover.  :good2:

Only saying because I was thinking of the same, but funds do not permit..

I had the same corrosion problem since B. C. weather and the liberal use of salt on the roads makes a mess of a lot of parts. I removed the cover stripped it in the glass beader and had it powdercoated black.

Five years later it still looks great.

How about giving the cover a good polish job and then having it clear powder coated?

I had the same thought on whether or not an XJR alternator would be a direct swap. My concern other than the bolt holes lining up with the crankcase, would be if the voltage/amperage is the same and if not how will it effect the electrical system.

They are the same bolt pattern & voltage, they just changed the exterior design for the XJR.

When I did my rebuild, my powder coater mistakenly coated the entire alternator cover in gloss black.  I had specified the masking of the brushed silver part because it matches the other engine covers.  I was disappointed with the all-black look, but two years later...it still looks like a new part.

This a link to yamaha parts aproved by Yamaha, it shows that the FJ alternator can be used on other models so the reverse can be applied,  years ago I used an FZR generator on my FJ whiched looked like an XJR one, racers at the time used to remove the alternator so if you could find a race electric tuner they my still have some on the shelf.
