Title: Lakeside Trackday Pics
Post by: stua1959 on December 11, 2013, 05:17:06 AM
Just a few pics of my day at the track last month. Had a great time, learnt a few things and the FJ went better than expected

Which way does the track go and what is the lap record ?

Nicely cooked rubber after about 20 laps

The best part was blasting past the trackday specials down the straight sitting upright tourer style, while they were crouched down behind their screens. Even more surprising was out braking them and keeping up in the corners. Mind you, it was the beginners group

Hi Ken
It was the best fun i have had with my clothes on for years. Everyone should do it at least once. I touched the pegs a couple of times but nothing too dramatic. The bike was great. No slides or wobbles. Maybe i wasnt going fast enough

Stu, did you have to prep your bike in any way? did the scrutineers check it out for leaks etc?  ken

Leon, stock rear wheel with Avon azzaro. Dropped the pressure to 35 rear 30 front. Could have gone down a little more but seemed to work okay

Doug u can hire leathers boots and gloves or use a 2 piece that zips together. . No excuse now eh

Ken they checked for brakes, oil leaks helmet compliance etc. The usual stuff. I had a slight fork seal leak but just gave it a wipe over before being checked. Supposed to take off any racks but I noticed one of the other guys still had his on.  Also because of noise restrictions exhaust systems are meant to be road legal. Many of them were definitely not but we're still able to run.
Check out the website. All the info is there

Great pics Stu, I bet you gave a few a shock when you passed them, :shok: old bloke on an old bike, what tha...... :sarcastic:. Wouldn't mind trying it myself one day, somewhere where you can cut loose without having to worry about getting caught.

What was your lap time.

I love Lakeside, but have never taken a bike around there, would be a lot of fun by the looks of it. Ok, we currently have our Manshed Days, always popular.

Howzabout we have an FJ Track Day, would be great. Although I would probably do this after March,  (popcorn)

Actually Ray that's not a bad idea, Seeing as how you can hire leathers etc there .... for the day, and if the price is right.....  might be something to think about.

What are the prices like Stu.

Damn, I wish I would have know about this sooner, I would've worked my schedule around the March 28 date, but it is too late for that now.

Maybe next time, Randy - RPM

What dates are you in Qld Randy?
There is a track day at Queensland Raceway on Sunday 16th March that may be suitable.

Can u imagine half a dozen old blokes on FJ's bunched up and banging fairings going into the first corner !
Hire of leathers is $80 and  photos are $ 55 so it's not a cheap day but well worth doing

Lol! Good one Stu, banging fairings, lol. I've got my 2piece zip together leathers so that's all good.

Did you always feel in complete control Stu, no "oh shit" moments to speak of?

Hi Ray,
No real " oh shit " moments. I screwed up a few corners until I learnt the lines. Its a tricky little circuit. About six riders came down but they were in the faster groups which caused some delays and meant we got less time on the track. One guy came off on his first lap at Hungry Corner and totally wrecked his bike. His day was over and he hadnt completed one lap.
I went there with the intention of trying out a few techniques that I wasnt confident of trying on the road - I did a lot of reading before I went. The first couple of sessions I was all over the show but then it all clicked into place and I was faster and smoother and was enjoying it more. By the end of the day I wanted more

They use the bus stop section which can be tricky and the left hand kink on the straight can be scary. You are approaching 200 kmh at that point and I always backed off. That where I got passed by a few of the R6's but I was able to keep up with most of them on the other sections. Remember this was the slow group. The fastest group were great to watch on their full on track weapons but I was told that Troy Bayliss laps 15 seconds faster than them. Awesome

Mate, sounds to me like you approached the whole day with the right attitude.  :good2: I know I`d be backing off at 200klicks on that dog leg too!

Did you try changing air pressures and note the differences? Was their air available? My standard wheeled fj doesn`t feel well planted above 140KLM/hr at all, on a particular long relatively tight curve... yet surprisingly okay below 100.

Ummm...sounds like we need an FJ BBQ tent....Dena wants ta hold one of them umbrella's at the starting grid too!

Did you notice that they hold the same event on some week days for $50 less.
