I have had my 93 for over a year now and the fork seals have just started leaking. I intend to eventually do the RPM valve, bushes, springs etc but for the time being I just needed a quick fix to get her back on the road. I ordered some seals locally and installed them today. I was very careful not to damage them, using a piece of plastic bag to cover the top of the slider when i put them on. Everything went back together ok and I test rode it. Seals still leaking, worse than before. Looking at my manual there is a washer that sits under the seal and on top of the bush. My forks did not have this. When thay were apart I noticed a brown residue on the surface where the seal sits. I did not try to clean it up too much for fear of damaging the surface. I am now wondering if the old seals have been glued into place . When i put them back together there was a couple of mm gap between the seal and the spring clip. After the test ride the seals have obviously moved and are now hard against the clip.
I just want to confirm that I need the washers and where would I get them from. Any other advice is always welcome
My opinion you need the washers and the surface you are referring to should clean up with a small screw driver and some cloth. If it is sealer then put some solvent on the rag and wipe it out. Hopefully it is just dirt, crap and old oil.

Thanks George. Thats what I figured. I will see if Randy can get them for me. Just means the bike will be off the road for another couple of weeks

On that second link you can scroll down and see what other models used the same washer. Some xtr's and fzr models used that same washer

Try your local Yamaha dealer Stu, should only take a day or two to get if they don't have any.

FYI, aftermarket seals have more issues than OEM.
Definitely need the washers Stu, and I used the seals/bushes kit I ordered from Randy last weekend on Manshed day. So far no leaks, and the washers go under the seals. There have been reports as already mentioned with some 3rd party seal kits.
Also be aware that the Clymer manual incorrectly says to install the seals open side up. They should be open side down. DAMHIK!! :dash2:
I also just disassembled a set of forks from an '86. If the washers are the same I will post them to you. PM me your address.

I went to the dealer yesterday to pick up a couple of the washers and was told there were only 2 on backorder in Australia. Although it is a common part there is not much demand for them. There will be at least a 3 week wait if I order them and will have to pay up front as it is not a normal stocked part. I didnt bother asking how much they wanted for a couple of 20c washers as I was already in shock.

Unfortunately, you'll find that is a common problem getting anything from Aussie dealers.
They have nothing in stock, want a price that is 3x more than getting it from the US, demand payment up front before they'll order it for you, tell you it will be X weeks and then give you excuse after excuse to try to explain the multiple delays before it might finally arrive. been there, done that (can you tell?)
Your much better choice is to order the parts you need from a US dealer, and the best one happens to be Randy. rpmracingca.com You'll get the right parts, at a fair and reasonable price, much quicker than you'd get them from your local Yamaha d(st)ealer.
This sounds like there is a nick on the inner tube. I always go over the area on the inner tube that the seal swipes with a fine deburring stone. It does not take much to make a new seal weep.

I had the same experience years ago when trying to buy pilot jets and also valve shims in the Los Angeles area. I began doing what I do with most of my discretionary spending- shop online! Arnie is right, Randy is the best!
I also do most of my parts buying on line. I try to support local business's as best I can but when they tell me that "they can order it" 99% of the time I just walk away and order it myself. I have got to the point where now I don't even want to go check and see if they have it.

I am not affiliated or in anyway or connected to them other than a very satisfied customer. Great place to check prices if nothing else.

I've used them several times... very satisfied customer.
couldnt agree more with dealers in oz, mostly what i buy is online and when i track down a good deal i will order some extras (spares) for down the track.
