Question. What's an acceptable final drive shaft lash? I've been feeling a weird rattle through my foot pegs under deceleration. It's most noticeable about 30 mph but is there anywhere under 50 or so. It's a new(ish) chain and sprockets, new rear tire, sprockets look food, no chain stretch. I put it on jack stands (no center stand: Yoshimura 4-1) put it in gear and it seems to be excessive slop in the front sprocket. I removed the cover and the nut and lock washer are still tight. I'm getting just over one chain link or 21 degrees of sprocket rotation in 1st gear or 5th, doesn't matter which gear.
Any thoughts? Like I asked first: what's acceptable or normal. If it matters I'm at about 55k miles.

Well there for a minute I thought you were talking about a BMW and feeding food to your chain.... :lol: :lol: Just giving you a ration of crap.. At any rate you don't have a drive line so the slop is zero. :rofl2:
Now to your problem. Have you tried to tighten your chain a bit and see if the noise diminishes ? Just for interest inspect the inside of your front sprocket cover for any rubbing or marks.
Is the slop you are referring to with the chain on or off ? If "on" it could be some slop or excessive wear in your cush drive in the rear hub ?

Note: on mine in first gear, chain on I have about 1 link of movement/slop in the gear box.
:rofl: Yeah, feeding food to my chain. Dang little phone buttons. The chain is adjusted right, about 1/2 inch of play. Wouldn't want to tighten it further. Yes, the slop is in the front sprocket shaft, and it sounds like yours is about the same as mine. One link of free rotation. Cush drive is tight. It's not a loose chain. I've experienced that noise. Loose chain I can hear but not feel. This rattle is felt and not heard. :unknown: maybe it's just an oil change indicator? :scratch_one-s_head:

:biggrin: I make my share of goof up's and misspellings and I don't have an excuse... Just old.. 1/2 inch of play might be to tight. Go looser and check ride.
I don't know anything about your bike so I have to ask. Have you done any mods to the rear like raising the ride height due to a wheel mod or if applicable changed the dog bones? I didn't catch what year of bike you have. IF you have raised the rear end then for sure loosen up the chain. If the chain is tight it can put some undue stress on the output shaft. I would rather run the chain a little loose. I will measure mine tomorrow but out of memory it is at least 1 1/4 inch total play but I have a modded rear wheel and raised the rear height. If I set it at the factory spec's it will "clack" or make noise at the front sprocket. Which I could also feel at the pegs...
When it comes to the engine internals I don't have to much direct experience with the FJ. I was going to get into mine this winter but my pocket book is on a continual drain doing mostly cosmetic stuff... :dash2:
