Title: I rode to work today...
Post by: Bminder on October 15, 2013, 09:57:07 AM
Woke up and it was 26 degrees, sunny and windy, with a high of 39 (3C) predicted.
So I decided to ride my bike to work today, 27 degrees (-3C).  Figured I needed to toughen up so I can ride all winter in Wyoming.
It was not too bad. Not bad at all.  :good2:

As long as the roads are clear and ice free, cold weather riding can be sweet. You can dress for the cold, mostly, and that crispy air can really be clean and bright. Just a different feeling from lazy summer riding..

That and, depending on your state of tune, you might pick up some extra power.
(I know the difference on cold humid days was readily felt in the form of extra get up and go on my V45 Magna on sub 40 degree days...)

Dried salt on the road surface is exceedingly slick.  Scary if you're not ready for it, amusing if you are.

If you gain real significant power at that level of cold, you're jetted too rich for the rest of the year.  With the stock FJ carbs, 30F = one jet size difference.  On the other hand... if you wanted to swap brass around in the spring and fall, you could pick up a surprising amount of oomph to get you there quicker in the cold....hrm...

Hmm, time to bring out the Gerbing. Nothing like a toasty warm chest and hands! (Oh, and if your visor fogs, try a Pinlock.) That's how my winters always go! :good2:
