Title: Boone 2014
Post by: CodyNKR on October 15, 2013, 08:44:37 AM
I know I know.....WAY too soon to think of it. but SOMEONE (not me) has to put in for vacation time. Can I reasonably assume that it's going to be the week of May 15-18?

So, as a Christmas/birthday present this year, my mother-in-law offered to come help my wife and cut me loose for Boone.  My MIL watched the kids solo in September when we went to San Fran and Sonoma (first trip sans kids in 8 years).  So I know she's up for another challenge.

Danny, I already pinged Dean.  He's up for a kabin.  If you're going, and willing, I could meet up with you for the back road ride to the BRP and Mabry Mill.

Hoping the whole plan doesn't fall apart.

Hey Chris that's sounds excellent, let's do it.   Wish it were sooner.  I'm starting to freak out and it's only Jan.

Danny - Great!

Just put fresh bearings in the FJR's front wheel.  Have a fresh set of PR3s waiting to go on as it gets closer.  Probably should try and request the leave time, now.

Hi guys, Kris & I will be there, probably a little early this year, like Tue. evening instead of Thur. I WILL be bringing hot beef jerky, don't worry, I even have some Jolokia pepper sauce to flavor one batch with ;^) I know Henry & Dean will try some. I'll probably have some milder stuff too, but no radioactive stuff, I know better.

Well, May 6 is our 25th Anniversary and May 8th is my wife's 50th birthday... I wonder what she would say about me riding down to Boone a week later instead of taking her away  :hang1:

Have a good rally everyone. Maybe next year for me.

I just became aware of the this, and I thought it my civic duty to inform my fellow FJOC members of the following:

The BCSCCA (Bureau County Senior Citizens Center Association, 16 West Marion St., Princeton, IL 61356 - that's the historic Clark Hotel on the corner of Marion and South Main Street, diagonally across from the Apollo Theater and Hoffman's Patterns of the Past, between the old Rexall Drug store and the barber shop) is planning a pilgrimage to the Asheville, NC area on the same weekend as the Spring Rally.

Embarking via "spacious, video- and restroom-equipped motorcoach" this gaggle of octogenarian miscreants plans to invade Asheville with the goal of making semi-organized assaults on the Biltmore Estate, the Antler Village Winery, St. Lawrence Basilica, The Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor's Center, and the Folk Art Center, before re-boarding their handicapped-accessible conveyance with the goal of inflicting their presence on the citizens of Berea, KY on their way back to Illinois. Fortunately, this brigade can be identified fairly easily due to their use of walkers, canes, portable oxygen tanks, and the occasional HoverChair(tm). Steel-toed boots are highly recommended.

While essentially harmless, usually unarmed, and slow-moving , it is recommended that this contingent be avoided if at all possible. It unlikely that this force will venture eastward beyond Black Mountain (Little Switzerland at the most). However, if contact proves unavoidable, expect and be prepared for discussions, conversations, and/or dissertations including the following subjects:

The weather

Politics

Various medical complaints, ailments, aches and pains

Things Ain't Like They Used To Be /  What The Hell's The World Coming To? / Kids These Days *

The size of the portions (generally too damned small, for the price) served at Restaurant "X"

Anything involving race, gender, or sexual preference

Their family histories, as well as those of people you don't know

The extraordinary intelligence, precociousness, or downright cuteness of their grandchildren (with pictures)

Senior discounts

They will also exhibit a marked tendency to read signs and public notices out loud for the general edification of those present. To wit: "Bullington & Finch, General Contractors... Aunt Myrtle's Pies... Homer Street...oh, my, gas is $3.29 a gallon now. Why, I remember when we drove from  Chicago to Miami for 72 cents, round trip." (segue) "And Kids These Days *, I'm tellin' ya..."

   * this means anybody under age 65

You, personally, are not expected to contribute to these conversations; your role is merely to listen, commiserate, and grunt in apparent agreement once in a while.

It might also be wise to carry along a pack of cards and to brush up on your domino-playing skills, in the event that you find yourself in forced prolonged contact.

You have been warned. Proceed at your own risk.

My age? I didn't say, but just for the record, I'm 57. My parents, however, are in their 80s, and I've been spending a goodly amount of time lately with them in my home town. They, in turn spend a fair amount of time at the Senior's Center* , primarily for cheap eats when Mom gets sick of cooking and Dad needs someone to tell stories to. As such, I get exposed too quite a bit of the aforementioned behavior between the BCSCCA, the local diner, and the Big Brains at Burger King.

I've also noticed these traits in my parents. I, on the other hand, am completely immune.

As far as my presence here goes, there are a number of the long time members here who can attest to the fact that I do, indeed, own and ride an '86. There are pictures in the Gallery, as well as one in my sig photo (except now it has a full lower and FZR/Marlboro decals. My join date shows as 2009, but I've been around longer than that...but I screwed up my login and the date got changed.

I don't post much, and given that there are many others here with more technical knowlege to contribute, I try to limit my contribution to being a smart-ass.  :mail1:

Cool, can't wait!

My bike has been totally stripped down to nothing and sitting on the lift for 2 months waiting on shock rebuild. For a while it was really sad looking - just a frame and motor, no forks or swingarm.

Greased everything ordered a bunch of new parts.  It's all in now, just need a few hours to work on it.

Nice looking bike, Eric.

Had a productive weekend in terms of Rally prep.  Got the tires and plugs changed, rear differential oil changed, air filter cleaned, and trunk repaired.  I think the oil change can wait until after the Rally.

Pretty happy with the Pilot Road 3s.  :good2:  Put on another set.  Got 16,175 miles out of them.  About the same miles as I got out of the PR2s, but I like the feel of the 3s head and shoulders above the 2s.  Of course they felt like crap the last couple months.  Forgot how easily the bike will lean with fresh tires.

Waiting to see how folks like the new PR4s.

I've heard you give accounts of mileage like that before but it still blows my mind since I get less than half, even on the 650 strom.  Are there velvety soft roads in MD or is it skillz?
Title: Re: Boone 2014

Not sure why, but I've always gotten decent miles out of almost all the tires I've tried.  Hell, when I had bias K591s on the FJ I got 22K+ miles out of them.  Handled like a truck, tho.

I could say I had a gentle touch, but I really have no idea.

On the other hand.. I usually get a fully rally out of a set....+/- 2000 miles seems the norm. Sport Tour tires seem worse than true sport.

My join date shows as 2009, but I've been around longer than that...but I screwed up my login and the date got changed.

I don't post much, and given that there are many others here with more technical knowlege to contribute, I try to limit my contribution to being a smart-ass.  :mail1:

Looks like all the stars aligned and I will be attending the spring rally this year. Project at work was delayed and the boss had no excuse to deny the time off.

Thanks to whoever decided to cancel their cabin. I was able to grab it today for the 15th through the 18th so it looks like all I need to do now is to remember where I put the bike keys...

Randy, Does that mean you won't be there? When I was on the phone they mentioned that the cabin I got was from someone who decided o bring a fun mover.

There are always the bunks if you can only do a day or two.

On that note, if someone needs a bunk its available. Only issue is that I snore and get up 2-3 times a night to pee.....

Well moment of panic around this house last night as I informed Jeff that next weekend we would be pulling out for Boone. YEPPERS it snuck up on him again and again the bike trailer is not fixed. How do I rememedy that you say......Craigslist to the rescue and now we have an enclosed trailer. So he's out there making it better for the bikes.

HOWEVER, it doesn't stop there! I've been needing a new helmet for some time.....so yep while I was out today, a new helmet I bought. With luck we will leave next Sunday and drive part the way. Finish the trip in on Monday.

OH and that's if Jeff with all his vacation planning put in for the right days....it's always something ain't it!

BOONE IS SOON!!!!

Not sure why, but I've always gotten decent miles out of almost all the tires I've tried.  Hell, when I had bias K591s on the FJ I got 22K+ miles out of them.  Handled like a truck, tho.

I could say I had a gentle touch, but I really have no idea.

Its not the Md roads that for sure. All i can do is shake my head every time Chris gives the mileage on his ties. I get 6 - 7 K at the most..

My brother and I will be trailering down on Thursday, straight through, with a solo rider (iron butt on a well used Tiger) running with us...returning on the Sunday.

Keep an eye out for 4 bikes, 3 with Ontario, Canada licence plates... BMW 1200GS (lead rider, NC plate), Red Suzuki RF900, Black Triumph Tiger and my White '85 FJ taking up the rear.

We will be around the Dragon on Friday morning (16th), not sure after that...

Danny you weren't the only one. Jeff ordered a new tire AND new chain and sprockets! He said his would probably be ok for the rally, but that he didn't want to get up there and be 'the guy' limping in with a bald tire, or having Cary ride the bike home cos' he was the lightest.

Might as well make it three, then. New rubber is going on the Falco today. Even with my much-abbreviated itinerary, I probably could've made it on the old tires, but it would have been very marginal.

Stu!  I'm glad you'll be able to make it, even if it's just a single night.

After reading that Cabin 4 was available, I called the next morning only to find that Buff Bill had already gotten it.  Man, ya gotta move quick to keep up with this crowd!

My FJ's tires are still almost as new as they were in Tellico - I think I may have only filled the bike a couple of times since then.  My current garage project involves the carbs in Andrew's Ninja 500; the needle in one carb wasn't seated in the slider correctly, so it sat probably 1/4" too high.  No wonder it started on 1 cylinder and ran so rough!  While it's apart, I'll do the valves and valve cover gasket.  He may have a buyer or two lined up for it.  I may or may not get the FJ valve cover gasket replaced before I leave; if I don't, I will just ride it as-is.

Dave (GTS1000/Fazer/Ducatis) will be in the area the following week for a wedding, and cannot take two weeks in a row, so he will unfortunately not be joining us this time.  He has seen far too much of me anyway lately (we are in Wichita working on a project together for a couple weeks at a time, with a summer coming up just like that but in Lakehurst NJ.)  I may join him on a road trip to Texas to pick up a 998 and a bunch of 916-compatible spares (bodywork, wheels, exhausts, ECUs) and we are still contemplating trailering stuff to Wichita and then on to the West Coast Rally, but that gets busy.  By Boone 2015, there is every possibility that Italian bikes will outnumber FJs, or at least FJRs, unless Eric and Calvin are both there at the same time.

Andrew has a couple days off before summer classes start next week, and the weather was perfect in Georgia earlier this week, so he has been all through North Georgia trying to use up his tires before getting new ones Monday.  We had such a blast riding up to Mabry Mill with Stu last year to meet up with everyone, but we will have to all do a different arrival plan this year - we will probably pack Tuesday night and ride up Wednesday, making a whole day of it.   Andrew has plans Saturday night so he'll head home Saturday, I plan to stay through Saturday night.

The weather looks chilly in Boone (high-40's at night, high 60's during the day) so I'll be bringing the cold weather gear and probably riding up in the rain suit.

Can't wait to see you all.

If you have a fork seal driver, that might be more useful.

Throw that in the truck too and maybe a ruler so they can reset the oil level in the forks.

Dan, sorry you & MD can't make it!

Andrew has a new pair of RoadSmart IIs as of today.  Tomorrow morning, we're going to leave and go north while all of north Atlanta is stuck in traffic going south.  We may double back and take a second trip up 129 / Blood Mountain because I'll want to try his bike in the twisties, but we'll head north through north Georgia and Sylva, NC.  We'll either hit the Blue Ridge Parkway before Waynesville, or we'll stop in Asheville for lunch and hit the parkway from there.  We'll hop off in Linville and take 105 to Boone.  Should be a nice 8 hours (versus a crappy 5 if we super-slab it.)

Can't wait to see you guys.

After I unpacked, I got my wife to help me push the tractor into the garage and out of the front lawn.  I used the trucks rear bumper to push and my wife steered the tractor.

Err, I don't wish to get too personal here but who the hell is KT?

Carey is a little different, but as far as I know he does not use a leash on friends or family members...

I'm lucky my brain works at all, anymore.  Sleep deprivation and kids have resulted in a sloshing mush inside my skull.

I'm a little late to the got home safe party but Dave and I made it home safe and sound. We rode atleast 60 miles down the parkway which was awesome. But freezing our asses off to do it was not awesome. The good thing about all the cold weather we got in boone is I will be much better prepared for cold weather riding on the FZ1 from here on out. I had an awesome time seeing everyone after all these years of being away. I'm very happy to be in the area of all my FJ friends. I hope to see some of you thru out this year and do some more riding with you all.  :good2: :yahoo:

Had a chance to look again and Nancy, Jeff, And George/Chris are in the sport touring section. I am listed as Naked.... and I believe I saw Henry in the RV enthusiasts.

They got pics going both ways but unfortunately the group I was riding with on the way to Shady valley was showing restraint ... So no hero shots for us.

They got me scraping a knee, as usual

Usually, I see a truck parked along the side of the road and slow down.  By the time I realize why the truck is there, the photographer then takes my pictures when I'm looking at the camera.  Fortunately my tinted shield hides my confused look.

Too bad, I'd like to see that series like they got of Deans 129 highside.  Maybe a shot or two would be t-shirt worthy..

(not the end, Frank already told me I looked like pee wee herman by that point, lol)

(popcorn)

Was he wearing the pink and black gear?
It'd make him easy to spot amongst the Winnies   :bomb:

Of course, he probably won't look back in here until he's doing ECFR prep...
