Title: Helmets.
Post by: Tex on October 11, 2013, 07:22:23 PM
Ok was just wondering everyone's thoughts on Helmets. Just want to get a feel for a good modular helmet that is more towards the quite side. Thanks.

Unfortunately helmet selection is limited by the shape of your head. A long established fact. Certain brands suit certain shape heads.
Many ideas have been floated about ways to custom mould the lining to suit individual head shapes but as yet I don't believe anyone does it, if they have, let me know, my helmet selection is very limited.
My 1st, 2nd and 3rd helmet choices were all dismissed because they did not fit. I then moved to my choice being determined entirely by what fitted.
Some people have more "universal" heads but to some extent the above always applies.

Just go to a shop with the biggest selection and try them all on. You will know immediately when you've dropped the right helmet on you head.

And, as Monkey said, good ear plugs. Not only for comfort but fatigue, concentration and long term protection.

Good ear plugs.....

Even with Arai full face helmets I wore ear plugs to cut down wind noise.  My experience with modular helmets is that allow more wind in and down not reduce noise very well.

Yeah I hear ya. And I will grab some from work but some of you guys have to have helmet prefences. It's for my girlfriend. I own a Shoei. Quite it's not. But I also am about due for a new one.

I will offer my 2 cents.  :sarcastic:

Noel is correct, that not all helmet brands fit the same. I am not sure if all the brands I list make modular helmets. The common well known manufacturers are all fine helmets.

Shoei,
Arai,
HJC,
Icon,
Joe Rocket,
Fulmer,
Nolan,
Bell, .....Note, Has the awesome transitions face shields.
Scorpion,

I am sure I have missed a few good brands, but any of the brands listed will offer great protection. The issue is, how does the helmet fit on YOUR head and how well you like the visual look of the helmet.

I bought a pair of Shoei RF800 helmets back in '99...one for me and one for my girlfriend.  We tried on lots of brands and models until we were both comfortable with the comfort.  I still use those two helmets, but have since upgraded the girlfriend.     Fortunately, the helmet fits her well.  Maybe...on some subconscious level, I am attracted to girls with a Shoei RF800 medium sized head?   :scratch_one-s_head:

That is a bit limiting.... I think the GF needs to bring her own helmet..... That is unless she is really hot. Then all bets are off......  :shok:

You just have to go and try a bunch on. They all have a different idea of a head shape. I have a couple of HJC's that fit perfectly and I have a Bell that gives me a raging head ache. They all all different.
Like Mark said... ear plugs.... At the rate I loose them custom ones would get expensive  :dash1: :dash1: .

Tex,

This was posted before you got here, but if I can just make it fit my small wallet and my large head, I would hope to buy a Stealth 6D-ATR for next year's riding.

IMHO, nothing else even comes close, in protecting your brain.  That "field test" in their video is almost unbelievable!  A poor helmet may not break in a wreck, but it might still allow your brain to get hammered when your brain hits the inside of the skull.  This happens because almost any wreck puts some twisting forces on your head, and Axonal Sheering is the result.  As brain injuries go, this one is really a bad one, slow to heal.

Like FJmonkey says, if you want quiet, get ear plugs.

Cheers,
Red

These are what I used. They are AWESOME!!! Just make sure you mold them within a week of getting them though.

So I picked up a Scorpion Exo 500. The owner of the bike shop recommended it. It fits really nice and also is so much more quite then my shoei. It also came with a internal sun shield.  :good2: as well as pump up Cheek  pads. Had her on the highway today.  At 65mph I could hear my FJ. Sweet. Over that I herd slight wind noise. So far very happy with it. My girl friend picked up a HJC. He bought a bunch of over stock ones from HJC.  $150 dollar helmet he gave it to us for $75. Not that I would let cost play a factor in safety but it is SNELL approved as well as DOT so that was an easy decision. I would of gotten one but he only had them in a baby blue scheme. Perfect for her not so much for me.

I wasn't too worried about the using the green, since they're connected to the rest of the set.

My first set was orange, and they were great, but one of 'em disappeared anyway.

I too have orange and I am amazed the number of times and places I have managed to find them.

When I first got them I threw one some distance onto sparsely grassed rough dirt to see how easy it would be to spot. Easy!

I then did the same thing but throwing over my shoulder, took me 20 mins to find it.

Many...

Fixed for you, but I absolutely agree with the sentiment.  Some manufacturers will vary their selection to ensure that they cover a wider variety of head shapes with their lineup.
