Title: Went for a ride
Post by: big r on October 07, 2013, 05:39:45 PM
I was able to get out for a ride yesterday. Did about 250 mi. I went to Tappen to check the motorcycle museum only to find that it was closed. Today my knees are so sore that I can hardly walk. I am not a happy camper, :ireful: :dash2: I don't want to sell the bike but if I can't be comfortable it isn't worth it. The FJ is an awesome bike and I really like to ride her. Have tried to raise the seat height  and lower the pegs a bit but I need to get my feet out from under me.  Anybody have any other ideas PLEASE? Thanks for any input gentlemen. Big R

The following thread has some photos of a possible solution for you. Page 2 almost to the end of the thread. My recommendation is to keep the triangle engine mount and add an additional triangle mount inverted like the photo and attach with 2 longer bolts to the frame.

Maybe this post about highway pegs will help with the knees?

You don't mention whether you are running hiway pegs at all, nor a throttle lock. These little items can give you a way to stretch out a bit.

I just ordered these pegs for my 87'. I ordered black ones, I will post photos once I receive them and get them installed.

Here is a set that I made from 2 different peg sets. With this set the drop is about an inch and moved forward about an inch. They don't look like the position moved much, but it is definitely noticeable when I ride the 89' a few days and then ride the 87' with stock pegs. I should receive the new pegs by the end of the week, or early next week. Once they are on and adjusted to my liking, I will make a post with the motorcycle model and position difference.

I am getting them off of eBay. I am not 100% sure it they will work, I will post my findings as soon as I get them and have them installed.

Here are the R1 fully adjustable foot pegs. They are not a direct bolt on. I had to slightly grind away some material from the OEM foot peg holder. The clevis pin that comes with the R1 pegs are not long enough, so I had to get a stainless bolt and lock nut from Ace Hardware. They are also a bit narrow on the hinge point. Shimmed with washers that are rubber on one side and steel on the other. I had to use the upper peg hole as the lower one made the peg interfere with the side stand.

Here is a photo

Nice work Fred and thanks for taking the $100 experimental plunge.   Do they feel as good as they look?

Yes they do feel good and position my feet a bit more forward. Really not noticeable until you sit on an FJ that has stock pegs, then you notice that the stock pegs seem awful high... :pardon:

A drawback is that you have to grind some material away on the OEM peg holders. I had a spare set, so it was worth the experiment.

Those look really good. I can see the drop, but how far did they move the pegs forward? Thanks Big R Ray.

I don't know the exact measurement. From an glance, I will say in the neighborhood of 1/2-3/4 of an inch.
