Title: Newbie
Post by: spike on September 28, 2013, 06:02:48 PM
Hello to all.  I"ve owned my 1984 FJ1100 for about 7 yrs now.  Bought it used, 32,000 miles,  did all regular maintenance, corban seat, side bags and K/N air cleaner.  I put about 15,000 miles on in 3 yrs then something bad happened.  Took it out of storage in spring.  Went through everything, changed oil.  Put about 300 miles on rural area, short trips, etc.  Then went on freeway.  Made it about 3 miles, loosing power and knocking sound.  Died.  Haul home.  Changed oil.  Found metal shavings in filter.  Loud banging sound. Then my first son was born. Just ran out of time to do anything with bike. Put in storage.  Now thinking of bringing it back from the dead. Going to use site for anything that might help.  Any ideas please send my way.  Thank you and again Hello to all !!!!!!

Welcome to the group Spike!  Sounds like an engine tear-down is in your future!  :yahoo:

My '92 sat for about seven years before I finally got around to a rebuild.  It's not difficult work, but it is precise work.  Inspect, bag and tag everything as it comes apart, replace the offending out of spec bits and bolt it all back together.  Take a few hundred pictures of the teardown...you'll be surprised how much that helps!  A good service manual is a must... and you can ask the group questions like, "Do I have this doomaflaggie upside down?" or "What's the torque spec on the Fetzer valve?"  If you're methodical, you'll have a brand-new engine to enjoy!

Or you could just ship it to Randy.

Welcome Spike, everything you need to know can be found here. Use the search function, ask questions, check www.rpmracingca.com (http://www.rpmracingca.com) site for OEM and custom parts for your FJ. Randy is a Yamaha dealer so if you don't see it, ask him. Once you get back on two wheels look for an FJ rally near you. They are a great way meet other FJ owners and help you appreciate the genuine community we have.
