Title: Mapleton Muster
Post by: Timbo-1 on September 20, 2013, 12:24:24 AM
Hello all, I have been having a chat with a few members from both FJ &FJR forums and there appears to be some interest in a bit of a get-together in the Sunshine Coast region. I have done a bit of research; unfortunately Kenilworth Homestead (as visited previously) is unavailable until 2014! I have sourced the Lilyponds Holiday Park in nearby Mapleton as an alternative for the 1st & 2nd November 2013.
http://www.lilyponds.com.au/ (http://www.lilyponds.com.au/)

Possible itinerary - gather at the venue Friday evening ride to Maleny on Saturday for coffee/brunch then off through some of the most the scenic roads of the Sunshine Coast hinterland or retail therapy for those who wish to remain in Maleny, returning to Maleny for a late lunch and leisurely ride back to Mapleton via some majestic scenery of the Blackall Range  :good2: (local knowledge from members is anticipated and will be much appreciated). Anyone unable to make the weekend is more than welcome to join us for the Saturday ride only. Dinner at the historic Mapleton Tavern :drinks: Saturday evening (400 meters from accommodation). http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/ (http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/)

If we could have an expression of interest within the next two weeks I will see if we can negotiate a bulk discount on the accommodation. Hope to hear from lots of keen soles soon; this ride is open to both FJ and FJR riders so hope to get some good numbers. Link to FJR forum http://www.forum.fjr13.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5212 (http://www.forum.fjr13.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5212)
Cheers Tim  :good:.

ahhhh...memories Richard...You were the last one ta leave me at the campfire last time we were in those mountains...and then only cause your spouse was getting all wrinkled waiting for ya in the Spa. I`ve never forgotten your dedication to those Ashes and I wouldn`t miss the opportunity to catch up again...Not sure if I`ll be there Friday night but definitely Saturday. (That pub has a great reputation)  ...Some of the replica`s are travelling a long way to taste what is only 20 mins from my place.

mmmmm...I better pack the wheel bearings on the bike trailer!  :sarcastic:

Hi Timbo, sounds good mate..... I can't commit to this one right now but it may be doable (will know in a week or 2).
I'm no longer a Sunny Coast local, now living in beautiful Brighton (on-the-Bay), Brizvegas.

Cheers

Just an up date on the accommodation for the event coming up. Have been in contact with Lilly Ponds Holiday park and they have six cabins still available for that weekend. There are also four rooms in the lodge available at the moment. These sleep two per room if anyone wants to share. They have kindly held two of these lodge rooms until the 12th of Nov. Also if we have eight or more booking we are in for a discount so when booking please say that you are part of the Mapalton Muster so they can keep track.
Cheers Timbo

Looks like our favourite set of twisties is out :sorry:

OBI OBI
OBI OBI ROAD
01:00 PM 29/09/2013

Obi Obi Road, Obi Obi - Commencing: 29 September, at 1:00pm planned roadworks are taking place Both Directions.
Single lane in operation. Short delays expected. Traffic control on scene. Expected completion is 31 December, at 12:00am.

Obi Obi Road, Obi Obi – The downhill section of Obi Obi Road westbound between Mapleton and Kenilworth is closed to all traffic. Traffic is diverted along George Wyer Scenic Drive, which is operating as a single lane under temporary traffic signals. Delays are expected. Observe signage and use caution. Works to be completed by end of year, weather permitting.

Darran, sounds to me like they are working on the downhill dirt section, and using the bitumen uphill section for both up and down, under traffic control conditions.

You are correct.
I rode it a couple of weeks ago and had to wait 10 min for the lights. They have put up those large plastic (water filled ) barricades along the cliff edge, taking up 1/4 of the lane. It has certainly taken the fun out of it. It would be quite a challenge getting down it in a car.

I think I'll jump on the bike and head out that way now!!!

WHAT!...only $35 DOLLARS!...Mate I didn`t wanta make this public, but I got some mates in "Thee" Latte Set of the Sunshine Coast. They drive up to Mapleton just for the Brekky & coffee at a café directly opposite those cabins. (Overlooking the same ponds!) It`s one of me secret venues that the tourists will normally never find....and if so, the police never find their bodies! ...That adds up to to bed & breakfast for two for less than $60! at an absolutely exclusive, award winning, gastronanza Restaurant. (I`ll pack some blindfolds so ya can`t remember tha way)...mmmm...might be a late start Saturday!

Hey Timbo, About what time Saturday morning do you reckon the ride will kick off, also is there a route planned yet or is that a secret until that morning.

Still contemplating whether to book a room for Saturday night( if still available )or ride home after the ride.

Okay Okay, I`ll fess up. It really was a mystery cause we couldn`t make up our minds. (you know what it`s like....all those lolly jars ...but ya get a sore arse if ya try to bring them all home!). Looks like we got a cross between a figure 8 and a kidney shaped plan hanging off the plateau. I`ll post a mud map but here`s a bit of what you`ll see: http://www.scenicdrivesofaustralia.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6&Itemid=7 (http://www.scenicdrivesofaustralia.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6&Itemid=7)
Debate on start time with Timbo went from 8.30am to 9.30am to allow for the Honeymooners & those not staying Friday night like you, XRay, Klavdy, Stainsey & Horse. (What time suits you?) Weather forecast is absolutely perfect esp cause it`s getting some light rain now to green everything up.

That's the only thing I found Tony was the cheap room rate was for 2 nights minimum, so I had to book Fri night as well, was only staying Sat night. But that's ok, had some days in lieu work wanted me to take so I have Friday off now, head up Friday arvo, woohoo!

What are the numbers for this weekend Tim?

Numbers are increasing at a staggering rate  :good2: and are now in single numbers... :empathy2: but I might add is a great improvement on zero.... :dash2:
From the FJR site we have Harold and myself both with pillions that are staying Fri and Sat night. One other maybe and another couple of possibles that are keen for the Sat ride. :unknown:
Accommodation should be still available for single nights in the lodge rooms at $35 a night, and at the end of the day there's the other caravan park if they won't come to the party for a single night. :blum1:
Cheers.

Light meals to gourmet starting from less than $12...but that`s not what I`m excited about!  It`s this:-

I am so jealous that I cant make it. It looks like it will be a great weekend but I have more important things to do - like doing a gazillion laps around Lakeside on Sunday !!
About 18 months ago when I had my VFR800, I mentioned to my wife that I would like to do a trackday so she went and bought me a gift cert last Xmas not knowing that an FJ is more suited to touring duties. I am a little nervous but it will be a great chance to practice some of the things I wouldnt want to try on the road . So I will be spending tomorrow doing some final prep and packing my spare pair of jocks. Thanks to Harvy, the carbs are synched and the fork seals are almost not leaking at all.
I will let you know how it goes and hopefully have some pics.
Have a good weekend and will try to catch up at the next mens shed

What a day :good2: Started out eating bacon and eggs while looking at the view below from the mountain top, then it was time to mount up and head off. Harvey led the ride, and took us on some of the twistiest roads I think I've been on, some corners so tight I nearly tied myself in a knot a few times, plus trying to keep up with the mad bastards in front had Chris gripping me extra hard a few times, great fun.

Lunch time venue was great, had a million dollar view of the glasshouse mountains and good food to boot. Couldn't find a room on the coast, either booked out or too expensive, so rode home. It was a big day, 510 km and nearly 12 hrs but a lot of fun. Thanks to all involved.

I'm ready to go again, what a great couple of days. "Lilyponds Lodge" was basic, but comfortable, (price was excellent), and was within easy walking distance of Mapleton Tavern, which was where we deposited many dollars Fri/Sat night, :)

Fridays rollup was me, Richard, and the FJR crew, Timbo, Harold,  Fay and Sharon. Harold is a story teller par excellence, got better as the night went on, lol.
Saturday morning brekky at the Mountain View cafe was great, waiting for us there was The General, Harv and Darran, ( I heard some strange whistles from the balcony as I rode past), and then Paul, Tony and Chris joined us soon after. The ride that we went on after brekky was unreal, General gave us a printed map of the proposed ride, Harvy took a couple of side roads on the way that were just superb, leading us past Conondale to the Bellbird Cafe at Kennilworth for a rest break. We then turned around, and rode back to Maleny where we had lunch with a million dollar view at Tranquil Park, really nice. After lunch, Harv, Darran, The General, Paul, Tony and Chris headed off home while the "Lillyponds Crew" went back back for some R&R before Saturday nights visit to the Tavern again.

Another nice meal, plenty of drinks and before the place closed at around 10.00pm? a few people including a 13 yo girl walked in and she jumped on the piano in the corner and belted out 3 tunes, very good playing, slightly clinical but the feeling for the keys will come with age.  A few wines back at "The Lodge" followed, sort of early night then we packed up and headed home around 7.45am, arrived back at 9.30am, 525kms.

Top weekend, thanks everyone  :drinks: :drinks:  Will put up some piccies later.   Nice pics Richard!.

Richard has sent through to my email a copy of his GPS file which shows where we went on Saturday.  I found a free online program called GPSVisualizer, just upload the muster.gpx file and then you can view it in several formats. I found Google Earth was the best, fantastic to see where we went in great detail. If you would like the muster.gpx file let me know and I'll email it to you, (can't see everyones email address).  :bye:

What's wrong with you Queenslanders, didn't you get supplied with any red and white FJ's. Looks like all the best models came down south to NSW.
It's a shame I live so far away, otherwise I'd add a bit of class to your bike photo shots.     Pete.

We do have a red and white amongst us up here, although it probably feels black and blue, been thrown down the road a few times, not a pretty sight. :shok:

As for class.... any more and we'll be riding around in suits and ties.  :mocking:

:dash2: Sorry guys had to work grrrrrrr  :ireful: what an absolute p##k of a weekend had ring side seats to several all in brawls at a couple of stations after face book parties were shut down!!
One funny thing tho was watching this young (use the term loosely) lady was throwing punches like a thrashing machine and not missing any of them, gave this guy a huge flogging so bad 3 young guys had to drag her off  :sarcastic: !!
Ray send it to me I'll have a look glad everyone had a great day

I've put a video together of the Mapleton Muster on Youtube. It's in 2 parts because of the 15 min limit on videos.
pain in the arse as i didn't want to shorten it any more, but anyway enjoy.... (popcorn)

Mate I sure did (enjoy)! Luv ta see the full version. (I think everybody opted not to lean too hard on that gritty, sudden left hander that saw most touch or cross the yellow). Fabulous country. Luv to see that run of twisties into or out of Pete`s Bellbird Creek Café.
...Nice, not to have ta wait too long for the Replicas ta catch up too!...really was a great day. Many thanks!  :drinks:
