That will be an interesting report. Never heard of an FJ dropping a cylinder. Any indications why?

No indication why yet, mainly because I haven't pulled it down yet, but, valve clearances are still good, cam timing perfect, oil beautifully brown, no blackness, cams clean and covered in oil, although I have been messing with the jetting and the plugs which were really black before, are now a nicer shade of unleaded fuel brown , so a piece of carbon may have dislodged and stuck to a valve (something I have seen many times before) I was hooking along two up when it started running odd the other day, either way when I get in there I will probably be doing a top end rebuild, after all it has done 138000 kms.... keep you posted.

Hey Chiz,
Australian actually. Having been a bike mechanic for 25yrs now, I tend to think, yep no worries, easy to fix. And having access to cheaper parts the cost isn't so scary. I will probably whip the top end off this week and start sorting what I need.

This is exactly the dame symptoms my '92 displayed at 140,000kms. Culprits turned out to be worn valve stem seals squirting oil into cylinders, and a slightly damaged bore on no. 2. I gave mine a hone, new rings, valve stem seals, new valve springs and relapped the valves and a quick port and polish. When I get it back together I'll tell you if it worked!
Story here, might help you avoid some of my errors.. :good:

I will attempt to George, my computer doesn't like my camera for some reason, so they may be slightly dodgy I Phone photos. I wanted to change my profile picture, but the only photos I have are on the camera.

G'day James,
When I get in there, I will also be cleaning and matching the ports up. Polish and radius the valves and what ever else it needs. I wouldn't polish the inlet ports, but will probably do the exhaust ports. Basically it'll get a top end rebuild.

Cheers,
Tom.

Head and barrels are off, sorry no photos yet,
L/H Number 2 cyl ex valve has a decent chunk missing?? Luckily, it seems, it went down the pipe! No piston or combustion chamber damage. So, it'll be getting pistons, rings, valve(s), stem seals, all gaskets and O rings, etc. Not sure about guides yet, haven't dismantled the head. I would say also it's the first time it's been apart as most of the head studs are corroded down a little - new ones coming also.

I'll try for photos this weekend.

Now where is that gasket scraper??

Tom.

Sure, 4pm OK??  :yahoo: It may take some time though to get parts, I am also trying to save to go to the UK next year.  I have some photos, just need to get them off my phone. Pulled the valves out today and cleaned them up. All inlets are like new. Found another dodgy ex valve so I am going to replace all the ex valves to be sure. Seats are looking good, but I will run the seat cutter over them before final lapping in.

No worries, I'll light the heater .. its usually the exhaust valves that go , I've got a couple of pics here of  burned out valves, the shims had never been adjusted by any of the previous 2 owners , then I rode 1000ks a week to work for 7 years and finally broke her , damage was done  :dash2:   ,,, at least yours is in excellent hands mate , rpm is extremly fast with parts so if your waiting on him it won't be long

Hello Tom,

Reading your post was like a trip down memory lane!  last year I dropped the engine out of the FJ1100 '85 with around 150,000kms I think for a fix as I had no compression in no.2 cylinder.  when the mechanic got the head off he told me a large part of the exhaust valve had broken off and welded itself to the piston crown.  He was able to easily chip off the piece and reuse the piston, but the engine got new exhause valves etc.

I have sent the mechanic an email hoping he took a picture with his phone, I will post it if he did.  A question I have is what fuel do you run?  I have always used 95 in bikes and cars, seems a good balance between cost and pinking.

Would fuel octane choice effect combustion chamber temps to a large enough degree to burn a valve?

cheers, Gareth

p.s if you use powerplus in the states for parts be prepared for a very long wait, but they have cheaper OEM than local.
