Title: An Aussie's First Encounter with FJ1200 owners
Post by: YFJ-12 on September 10, 2013, 06:52:16 AM
Hi,

Many years ago when working for a bank, I arranged a personal loan for a customer to buy a new motorcycle (86 FJ1200).  I owned a 79 Honda Bol'dor 900 at the time & when he bought the bike to the bank to show me, I feel instantly in love with the FJ & promised myself that one day I would get one. Since then, the FJ has been to me, what the perfect road bike should be (air cooled, chain drive, partly faired, whale tail).  Even today, I can't name another bike that looks as good.

Well, 25+ years on (plus two marriages, two kids, various jobs, towns, etc), I finally bought my beloved FJ (by accident, but thats another story) and whilst the Mrs. would like it gone, I think she knows deep down, that if I have to choose between her & the FJ......well its no contest.

She is a 1993 model (non ABS), Blue & Silver, only 29000 klms and original apart from staintune mufflers & Gearsack rack, purchased March 2013.

So I found this FJ owners forum & joined up, then basically forgot about it.  I don't have many mates with bikes, & the couple that do, have cruisers, never seem to want to ride, and go "way slow" when they do, so I joined up with a group on line, based in Brisbane.  On my first outing (Sunday 8 Sept 13), we had various cruisers & a couple of tourers, one sports & me on the FJ. The first stop was the Australian Motorcycle Museum at Haigslea.

I couldn't believe my eyes as we pulled into the car park, to see FIVE FJ1200's lined up in the car park (with owners standing by and watching me).  I parked up the other end of the car park, with my group, but immediately headed down to the FJ's and by way of introducing myself said "I'm ditching that gang & joining your gang". Well I had the right bike, so they seemed to be happy to accept me then & there.

Well that my life story to date, but many more biking chapters to come.

Doug, It was great to meet you and the gang.  You all impressed me as really genuine nice guys (must be a prerequisite to getting an FJ).  Really looking forward to getting together soon.

Good stuff Paul. Yep, saw you again at Ma Ma Creek as we went past on the way to Nobby. Was a good day out.  But keep your eyes peeled in the "Downunder" section of this forum, thats where we list all ride details, get togethers, Manshed days etc.

And again, your number plate is the same as mine apart from one letter, lol.

Welcome Paul, great story on finding/stumbling onto the local convict branch of the FJowners. Now tell us the other story on how you accidentally bought your FJ. We love stories as much as pictures (FJ porn).

:hi: Mate! What a great intro! Fate is an amazing thing (We couldn`t believe how close ya number plate was to X Ray`s). Something Similar happened at the Aussie Rally in Bellingen this year. ...Plenty of absolute evidence here to support your prerequisite notion. ...There IS something special about the FJ. I was on the phone to dash yesterday (Darran-oz.fj) and asked him about a sensation I get when I`m on a ride of more than a couple of hours... After putting his filthy mind back on track I explained that it might be something to do with my soft ears. (he began ta choke again!)...but anyhow, he agreed he`d experienced tha same sensation, also when by himself, on a long ride.
Now that I know it`s not my old ears, I would be interested ta know if it only pertains to the FJ.
After a couple of hours the sounds become almost silent, except for a soft buzz that exudes quality engineering and harmonises into a euphoric feeling that blocks out all Newtonian physics. ...it`s just fantastic and have heard it described as "On Song"...then again I guess we could be just w......     Nahhh!
...Sorry, I`ve digressed off topic a bit, but look`n forward ta seeing you at Manshed 2 (Saturday 28th Sept)  :drinks:

Welcome to the forum Paul, great story about about how you got your bike, and yes we are a sight to behold,  :shok:a motley looking crew that there ever was. You should've ditched that other mob and came with us, but there's always next time.

I've only been a forum member for about 6 months, and the mods I'm doing to my bike I would never have done, if it wasn't for the knowledge on here.

There are some very smart people here, and if you have a problem with anything, just ask and I bet your problem will be solved.

Hi Paul and welcome aboard from another Gold Coaster (Burleigh Heads).   This is a great forum and the Aussie FJers I've met so far a an easy bunch to get along with.  My FJ is the 91 black and brown.
