Hi everybody, I just picked up a pretty clean 1992 FJ1200 for doing day rides short trips with my girlfriend. I've had loads of bikes in the past and just moved here from Seattle. My other ride is a Ryca flat tracker looking 650 single, heaps of fun, but, only room for one.
My bike is pretty solid except for the following:
runs very rough at idle, wants to die, but, pulls strong over 2000. I will try new plugs. Also plan to rip the carbs apart for a good cleaning. Maybe the fuel mixture screws are off a bit too, it has the stock airbox. Rubber air intake manifold is cracked a bit, but, that's easy to replace.
A few of the carbs seem to be leaking fuel, maybe from the bowl gasket or seal. Looks like a metal gasket on mine. Hopefully pulling them out won't require stripping the frame to the metal :dash2:
ABS light flashes intermittently on the dash. Manual says this means it's not working. Yamaha dealer in town doesn't even work on bikes older than 2000... Hope to read up on some solutions here.
Otherwise, that baby is a plush, soft, smooth, comfortable, great protection, 2-up rocketship.
Pegs touch down to early though.
Cheers big ears -Dave
Welcome Dave, your idle issue is likely clogged idle jets, they gum up fast with this new gas. Use the search function, you find a boat load of info to get your FJ back into the Kookaloo zone. With your other issues I would consider the RPM carb fastener kit (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=carbkit&cat=39) . It has what you need to replace all the O-rings and the fasteners with SST hex socket fasteners. Makes working the carbs easier. If you are feeling like another upgrade to help wok on the carbs then consider UNI dual pods. With the air-box out getting to the carbs is a breeze.... Enjoy our digital campfire....
Welcome to the group Dave. I am originally from that area, 45 miles North in Beaufort, SC. There is a huge wealth of knowledge here. If in doubt, ask a question.

Thanks guys, I'll be reading all up on the carbs. Fred, I lived on Parris Island from '78-'80, my father was in the Corps when I was a kid. Beautiful little town, especially back then. Good memories.
I had my High School Prom on Parris Island and I also went to Boot Camp there when I enlisted.

Welcome! Sounds like you need a good carb cleaning and tune. All the carb parts are available which is nice. Some resources are:

Randy at RPM is a member here and an invaluable source of parts and information.
When you get ready to work on them let us know. There are a few tips that will make it a lot easier remove and work on them. Ask questions, it is cheaper and lot less stress

Dave welcome, congrats on getting the FJ. 92 is a good year. The abs never worked well. mine quit in the first year or two. Most remove it and use the R1 brake calipers, EBC HH pads and stainless steel brake lines. Hope this helps.
Kurt
Cheers Kurt. Yup, must get some EBC HH pads. Will look into removal requirements.
Welcome to the forum Dave.....from Toronto Canada....love to take a trek out that way some day...
