Title: Rough roads and crap suspension
Post by: Tom on September 07, 2013, 04:44:41 AM
Out for a ride today - but while at the end of a particularly brain shaking road, two up, about 120ks from home the bike started running rough and finnaly stopped?? A little bit of investigation found the fuel pump not working?? A quick twiddle with the screw drivers and a bypass from tank straight to carbs and the old girl limped home. Stripping said fuel pump down I have found that the earth wire had broken off. Fixed that, but now the bike decides to have no ignition power?? Still to investigate that problem!! Still at least it got home.
Looks like I'll be dirt biking it for a few days
Any body know of a decent fuel pump?

Hi, welcome, the fuel pump itself usually not the problem, there is a set of point contacts that eventually breakdown, these contacts work like a relay where the open and close pumping the fuel. These contacts can be purchased separately and can be easy to replace, either check ebay or purchase these from RPM.

This has been discussed here many times before.

Sometimes it is the contacts, other times it is the diaphram in the pump, and sometimes it is the solenoid coil of the pump.  In any case, your choice is to either try and repair your pump unit or replace it with another.

The pump is just a low pressure 12V pump as is used in many other vehicles.
Below is a list of some of them.

Arnie

FUEL PUMPs   Part No      Pressure Range   Max. Flow
  Brand      FED-40104    1.5 – 3.5psi   28 gph
  FEDTRO      FED-40105    2.5 – 4.5psi   30 gph
Sold on Ebay.au by       the_auction_broker  (Philip Island)
* FuelFlo        015             1  -  4psi           23 gph   1.5Lpm
   Repco supplied for A$110.00
Airtex -       ES8016S      2.5-4.5 PSI          30 GPH
5/16" hose barbs   It is a solenoid pump that stops fuel if no power

Thanks for the info Arnie.
The actual problem was a broken wire to the solenoid. The points are badly worn, but I will probably get a new pump anyway. Just for peace of mind.

Just so you're aware.....There is a solution to counter those "brain shaking roads".

It's on its way from RPM.

Fixed the ignition problem. The main wire from the fuse / battery to the connector block at the ignition switch was corroded and broken where it passes by the carb bowl. The lowest point for water to settle!. Ended up replacing the whole wire as it all looked decidely old.
