I actually found a set of yamaha's and also a more oddball one on ebay, just not sure on fitment for the oddball one.
From the previous owner it seems as though once you flop the fj over, the brake pedal devours the clutch cover, I have 2 spares with nice holes in them

Ok, Renntec or Factory Yamaha or http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230371872609&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_976 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230371872609&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_976)
So far 2 votes for renntec
I have a factory set of OEM
But I want the added protection of the renntec

they are more now than what i paid for mine but i would still buy them again in a heartbeat.....
couple of questions you need to answer for yourself.......while pinching pennies AND trying to protect your investment.........
1) how much is a spare clutch cover?
2)Are you gonna carry it around with you while out riding?
3) how much will the tow bill be if your bike accidently tips over (or an unintentional dismount occurs) and all your oil runs out on the ground?
4 ) question 3 + in the middle of nowhere...... with no cell coverage???????? :flag_of_truce:
5) who will you send the bill to when a dog (canine) runs over your bike while driving a uninsured pickup truck thru a gas station parking lot?...tipping your bike over so the brake lever punches "the" hole..... oh yeah oil on the ground there too......renntec engine bars would have prevented a rather large fiasco in that case.
some bonus information for ya....i low sided with mine on and they kept the bike from smashing my ankle as well..... a little sanding and black paint and the Renntecs were back and ready for action..... so they are also durable.
come to a FJ rally and you will see way more FJs with the renntec engine bars than you will see without them...... but thats not a selling point it just means we have some smart (ass) owners
it has been my experience that the good shit costs extra for a reason..... it's worth it! :good2:

+1... and a side benefit that I hadn't counted on is that the bike seems noticeably more solid with them on.
FWIW, once upon a time we had a group buy on the Renntecs.

Well, I guess I will go with the renntecs as soon as I can afford them. I wont be riding until then anyway, too much other stuff to do on the bike
Make that 3 votes for the Rentecs.
Yes, I bought mine thru the group buy.
The are EXCELLENT........ my story..... fitted them on a Thursday, went for a ride the next Sunday and high-sided......... not a mark on the engine at all.......same can't be said for the cosmetics or the rider!
Go Rentec..... they are very strong and easy to make them look right again after a dismount.

+1 on the Renntecs. My bike went sliding down the highway for about 20 or so yards on the bars. Flattened and blued the bars, but no harm to the engine. Picked the bike up and and rode it home. (add in an adrenalin rush and rush hour traffic, and it wasn't quite as simple as that). Sanded and painted the bars and they're still on there.

Or when some dumb ass uninsured driver runs into your bike as you are getting ready to load it up for a big trip out west. The engine bars saved my bike from additional damage. They are well worth their cost IMO

Add 2 more votes for the Rentec bars. I have them on my '85 and '93 FJs. Fortunately I haven't had to use them, but it's good insurance.
That price is a bit of a shock, but I bought mine many years ago for around $100/set.

OK, OK already you convinced me. :flag_of_truce:I'm going to order a pair as soon as I can.

Has anyone started (in the middle of) a group buy for Renntec products.
I would like a set of engine bars $188.95 seems a bit much but I have not ever herd anything bad about them.
10% off would be nice but don't have all summer to do this. So if anyone wants any Renntec products at 10% off lets do this.
If not, does anyone have any nice ones they want to get rid of.

just think about your ankle for a minute and wonder how it would compare with the weight of the motorcycle on top of it.
i was really happy when i went down with mine.....instead of the bike dragging me down the road i was able to just pull my foot right out from underneath..... Lots of benefits with these renntecs :good2:

If the group buy will include bars that fit my 91, then count me in as well.
Leon
All right now, we have 4, any more takers. One more and we can at least get 5% off.
Does not need to be only engine guards, rear racks or any other Renntec product will work.
Any fabricators out there that that are willing to beat that price & fit please speak up.

Yeah, worth every penny. The tow alone would have cost more than the bars. I rode her home, had a broken mirror, but otherwise bike was fine. Don't recall my ankle having issues. I hit with my right arm and leg, then went tumbling down the highway, scraping the helmet.

Frank,
I understand that, we're lucky to have the parts that are still available for these dino's.
Being on the top 10 best bike EVER list, may have something to do with that.
I just can't believe that only four of us want these bars.

I am interested in a set for my 86', I just don't have the funds for them.....
I can relate to that, that's why I want the discount.
And I'm not getting younger, and it's not getting lighter.
So maybe a little insurance, plus strengthen the frame can't hurt.
Bob W
Lets do this thing!
Who has the hookup for the discount?
Leon
I have been talking with them, and we need 5 more to get 10% off.
But we have enough to get 5% off right now, and it's only been a couple of days.
I do want to stay on top of this thread so we can get this going.
It is the yahoo discount don't know who started it but thanks.
This will work for any of the Renntec products. guards, racks, bags etc.

Don't think it would be any big deal to make these. anyone willing to do a little measuring and shoot a few pictures? (can't see where that bar that angles down attaches at the bottom) and send me the info, I will look into it and mabe make up a set. See what kind of time and material expense I get tied up in it. Just received a pm from Russel
They're in the mail!! :yahoo: :yahoo:
UPS left mine on the doorstep yesterday. I'll be installing them Friday.
Got mine today, they look great! :good:
Got them today, had them on 20 minutes later. Now hopefully I'll never need them.

Does any one know if the guards shipped yet? I haven't seen mine yet.
(popcorn)
Russell emailed me the other day and said that my guards were boxed and ready to go.I had someone try to fraudulently try to use my M card so I had to cancle my card and am waiting for my new one so I can pay for the shipping :dash2:  So I guess that he must have them and they are on there way.
That is one bitchen bike Leon! :good2:
Is it too late to get on this deal? I've been debating about getting a set and this put me over the edge.
Travis tried but Russell said they need another 10, That's kinda bull shit seeing we just did a 12/13 person group buy.
All it did was save the shipping any way.
Got mine the other day, opened the box and just knew I didn't want to go any farther. Great big box and there basically wrapped together, scratched all to fuck. (for brand new)
Don't like the mounting either, no spacers like back in the day. (hokey at best)
Will need to upgrade hardware just like on my flexy flier rear rack. They are cool looking though.
Bob W
Mine showed up Monday. Same packing as Bob's, but at least they were not scratched. I noted the same, our 'deal' came out to free shipping. Thanks, but really ...
But, Good Job Bob! :hi: Thanks for putting it all together.
So, after looking at these big chunk's of steel, I'm thing they need to be silver instead of black. Anybody else thinking that?

That's too bad, for $188+ I would have expected better service. I've been on the fence on getting a set because I was undecided if I liked the looks. Last thing I would want is to receive set of scratched up bars.

One of mine was all garfed up when it arrived on the 1st group buy.

Mine were packed tightly together and only had two small chips in the paint, not bad in my mind.
I think the black blends in with the engine color and doing so, don't stand out, like they would if they were painted silver.
But I think that is all a matter of taste.
If I see some painted silver and mounted on a bike, I might reconsider.
So lets see some pictures guys!

Same with one of mine from the first group buy. What was that? Like 6 years ago? Also, wasn't the price about $130 back then??
Anyway, you would think they could learn basic packaging skills. This type of service comes from people who don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. It is a shame that this is our only option. I know others have chimed in before about possibly making them and selling them. What ever came of that?
i can say the paint that came on mine originally was very soft....scratched very easily.
the good news is they work as intended and are reasily repainted.
KOokaloo!
i was pretty lucky. the packaging was decent and there wasn't a scratch on them. got them on there right now and it looks pretty nice.
i think for a group buy, i would have expected a better discount. but apparently we wanted them bad enough that we paid the price, welcome to capitalism.
I am going to get my welder buddy to look them over and give me a price on making some up.
Another buddy has a powdercoat business, for any color option. I will let you guys know.
If anyone that has had these for a while, and wished they were a little different please speak up.
I don't want to build these, if there maybe a better set up. I am open to suggestions.

I think we all had the same complaint on the first group... not packed very well. I did not get in on this buy for my other '87 because I didn't like the $50 dollar increase. If someone make some up for less than the original group price $130 I am in for a set.

I am interested in silver to match the frame for sure..... I asked Russel about color options as i mentioned before and it started to look like it was going to be worse than pulling teeth so I backed off.. I will be very disappointed if mine arrive with any scratches- they are supposed to be new. :unknown:
As crappy as the paint is, just spray them what ever color you like. If you don't like that spray them black again.
Think I'm gonna get mine powder coated, black.
I should be able to show my buddy today, see what he says. I doubt your gonna see less than $130.00.

Wait - are they painted? The ones from our first group buy 6 or so years ago were powdercoated black.
If so, then that sucks; more expensive and lower quality. At least the shipping service is consistent!

Marsh if they are powderd they are really poorly done, I will show mine to my powder coater buddy and see what he thinks. as long as I get him before the :drinks: do.

If anyone has a set to loan me, I could reverse engineer them and make drawings. I would prefer a set that fits 86/87 (I would not install them). Then we can find a shop to make them. Randy used my reverse engineering to make the fork braces. I need to figure out how to get a free set for my engineering services for the club. The offer is out there if anyone wants to take it.
I just remember getting my set a being marred up. I think I coated mine myself when I had my wheels done but I maybe wrong, I'll have to check when I get back home.

Thank guys you kinda make me feel better, knowing I'm not alone in this.
But it really pisses me off that in 25 plus years they haven't figured it out yet how to ship.
It's not like it's a fly by night operation.
Bob W
At least you all have your bars I am still waiting for mine.
Sounds like they will need powdercoated so they dont scratch.
i just shot mine with krylon gloss black..... and after 10 years, one lowside and several tip overs i'm still glad thats the way i went.... super easy to sand the scuffs off and touch up the boo boo's that are bound to happen sooner or later.
JMO
kookaloo!
Cool sounds like a nice solution.
My set finally arrived today! :good2:
I am pleased to report that they are scuff free and looking sweet. I will mount the m up the next time I am out in the garage wrenching!
tim
They must have had to make yours, but at least they were not scratched.
I am looking in to better fittment on mine, not happy with the way they mount them. :ireful:
(unless I'm doing something wrong) :dash1: It's pretty staight forward.

Hi Ray McDonald here just started to install my engine guards and was wondering if there is supposed to be a spacer where the bolt goes into the foot peg bracket? also where you take the dummy hole cover out is the bar supposed to fit into the hole or just but up against it? :flag_of_truce: :dash2: :scratch_one-s_head:

The fit is not very precise... it will end up in the vicinity of the hole, but does not go in it.

thx Randy. I got them on and they don't look to bad. I am going to take the bike over to my brothers place and see if he can't machine a spacer to fit in the footpeg bracket hole. I'm kinda lucky, he has a lathe and a milling machine. He has way to many bikes(note the tone of jealousy) nortons triumph bultaco ajs yamaha kawasaki bsa rocket 3, and a ton of parts for them all

I would think that, for the cost, they'd make that part of them fit a bit better, but hey, that would take some effort. :dash1:

Yea, I agree they definitly could fit better, but they look pretty good on the bike and after looking at some of the pictures posted here they are probabley still a good investment. Now all I need is for the weather to cooperate so I can go for a ride. This working for a living really sucks, especialy when I have to get up at 2:30 to go to work and don't get home until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The joys of hauling logs for a living.
