I thought this might be of interest to some.
What makes this different from other products is it's static film, no adhesive, can be peeled off and re applied many times over.

Excellent :good2:
I will consider that after my repaint..
Thanks
Looks like a very interesting product.
Shame they don't have any for either the FJ or the Aprilia Shiver.
I'd especially like the headlight protector for the Shiver as I already have what may be the same material over the headlight on the FJ.

So Noel, how would this work? I don't see a listing for FJ's....Get a sheet and cut it to match the tank?
I'm getting a tiny bit of scuffing on my clear coat at the knee indentations on my tank from the ballistic nylon material on my riding pants.
Does anyone out there have any templates we could use?
I like this idea (it's removable and replaceable) I'm in...Let's do this.
Randy, let's get a bunch made up (precut) for our tanks.
It is probably 3M "Clear Bra" material or a copy. You can buy the material and cut your own. Check out the posting in "You Tube" to get an idea how easy it is. I have been thinking about installing it on the top side of my tank for add protection from tank bags, gas etc..
Here is one of many:

Hey George, I'm not sure the top of the tank is a good idea with gas dribbles and all...

Here's a warning they post:
IMPORTANT: While the tankslapper material is an excellent, inexpensive solution for preventing abrasion damage to your paint's surface, it is not intended to prevent damage from fuel or chemical spills. In the event the film should come into contact with these substances, while refueling for example, you must immediately removed the effected piece of film from your bike and wash it with soap and water, at that point it will be ready to re-install.
Failure to do so will result in damage to the film and possibly your paint finish.
This is of particular concern to tank bag users because typically that portion of your kit often surrounds the fuel inlet on your tank.

The back of the tank (the belt buckle area) and the knee indentations would be what I would do.

OK, an idea down the tubes :cray:... It was a thought anyhow... I wonder if the 3M material is the same. You have to use a heat gun to remove it and you can't reinstall it. Somewhere along the line I will get a piece to test on my old tank.
Back to sanding and polishing ##$@% :dash2:

+1 I would buy both an innor one for knee indent and ones for back of the tank x 2. One set for both my fj's.

George, I think the "Clear Bra" is the same as pretty much every other similar product, semi permanent. It sticks to the paint but can be removed if necessary.
The difference with this product is it's static film, just peels on and off.

I think you are correct Noel. From what I have seen the clear bra (ans similar) products remove easy with a heat gun. I don't know there resistance to gas or reaction,..... yet . More investigation needed. I can see where a static pad would leak liquids under it. That would / is very bad for paint for sure.

Yes Pat, I have that exact problem. I begrudgingly have a conventional protector on the back of the tank but don't like the idea of semi permanent plastic all over my paint and had considered velcroing lambswool pads to the inside leg of my pants.
An internet search last night failed to find this product in bulk so I have emailed them asking if they will sell blank sheets. It's not very expensive.
Someone here on the forum must posses the skills to make a perfect template for the knee indents.
In fact, someone here must know where you can buy this stuff in bulk. It is commonly used on all sorts of things.
How could you possibly cover this up permanently with plastic.

These guys are in Escondido, Ca. Just next door to where I am staying. I think I'll stop in for a chat.
Unfortunately, my bike is back in Palm Desert, and I am in Leucadia.
Anyone in the San Diego have a FJ tank I could borrow? (You will get a free set when done)
Oh yea Randy, I'm gonna sign you up as our dealer....
Stay tuned.

Your are right. This stuff, as opposed to the more permanent films, does not like fuel.
Anyone that owned a bike in the 70's will remember the red / pink staining around the filler cap they all developed over time. Although more modern clear coats are impervious to petrol my refuelling habits have stayed with me. I invert the nozzle carrying it to and from the tank and have never had a single drop of fuel on the FJ tank. Even if you did spill some it's not a disaster, simply peel the film off and wash it then stick it back on.
Noel
I have a spare tank, but not in San Diego, think North Glendale/La Crecenta... If that will work...
Paging MoPar Steve......
I would think a vinyl sign business could cut it, you would have to come up with a digital file for the pattern. Need to talk to a sign maker :) ?
George
Ok, I just got off the phone with Lucas, the owner of Pacific Auto Trim.
He doesn't want a tank, he wants the whole bike. He needs it for about 1/2 hour to cut and make the patterns for our FJ's...
I told him fine, as soon as I can get a bike, I'll call him and set up a appointment. He sounded very interested in making a product for our FJ's
Anyone in or near the San Diego area care to volunteer?

Brilliant work pat, I'll send an fj over :good2:
Sorry too far to bring my bike but count me in on a set!

Working on it.....
I have just installed some pieces of this stuff on the tank. I am in the process of possibly starting a business in this industry. I had my wifes car done and have done a little bit of work with the company that does this. Its expensive material. Its self adhesive, yes you need a heat gun to remove it and it does stretch. It can be a real bitch to work with. It looks easier than it is to apply. Dust is a HUGE issue as well, particularly on black and white objects. Not very forgiving if you have to remove it as it stetchs. I got some sample sheets and have bought a machine to cut it with. (NOT SCISSORS) Lol. There are different brands on the market. I have tried 2 companies and had alot of success with one. Unfortunately the company only sent me A4 size sheets to try, however I cut the sheets in sections and yeah it may look a little like a patchwork quilt, I managed to cover the top of the tank. The gloss factor is brilliant. I had the tank repainted prior to this so my way of thinking is some protection is better than none. I double layered it at the seat end and still the gloss was exceptional. I also as an experiment used the other brand. What a letdown. I am going to invest more time into this as I think its great, if you didnt see the joins you would never know its on. This product is also on my wifes car on the front. A huge plus for stones and also Bird shit. It scars the material and does not effect paintwork. Once I get a roll of this material I am going to recover the tank in one sheet. Just to give you an idea of cost. To do the front of a car from halfway down the bonnet all the front bumper/ spoiler /lights/driving lights/half the front guards / side mirrors/ doorcups and strip along the top of the rear bumper itr cost $950. Very well worth it. It doesnt stop large rocks but resists alot of sand blasting / scratching. If I new how to post pictures on here I would do it. If I get enough interest I may look at the bike tanks as an option. Patterns would need to be sent or made though. I had asked the company about the bike tanks being totally covered, but the only down side to it is it would have to be done in sections as the material isnt a heat shrink product. I dont care about seeing the joins as long as my pride and joys are protected.
Jeff, the Tank Slapper product is not the 3m product. It's thinner and has no adhesive.
Check out the website. They sell both products and they discuss the differences.
There's 2 versions in 3m also Avery make one. It's thick not as shiny. Hard to cut and mould to shape. I'm using 3M.

The static film (Tankslapper) I imagine is not as shiny or able to be polished like the semi permanent ones, but that is what I want. I want something I can put on for trips and peel off when I get home and stick on the garage window till next time I use it. If it gets a bit of crap under it from taking it on and off I don't really care, although they can be washed. It will only be on the bike when I am riding long distances. You do need a permanent hard one at the back of the tank but I just don't like the idea at looking at my tank under plastic. I know it's shiny and protects it and all that. I know it makes perfect sense but I just don't like it.
Mind you, I do wish I had put a hard one on the top of the duck tail which has been knocked around from luggage and a piece above the tail light which is showing signs of all the road debris thrown up by the tyre.

Here's a update:
MoparSteve to the rescue! We have an appointment @ Pacific Auto Trim on Tuesday for pattern templates! :good2:
Ask and ye shall receive.... http://thetankslapper.biz/osc/index.php?cPath=26_1238&osCsid=970566d743c21f7a91752e8a80f606bd (http://thetankslapper.biz/osc/index.php?cPath=26_1238&osCsid=970566d743c21f7a91752e8a80f606bd)
The photo's are not up yet. The 'Tankslapper" is the static cling material....The 3m product is the clear film with adhesive.
Both products are the same thickness.
The tank used for the patterns was Steve's 1990 (moparman) so if you have a 84/85 FJ...DO NOT order the top piece for the tank..the hole in the film for the gas cap will be in the wrong place. The tank sides for the knee cutouts would be fine. They are the same on all models.
Did they make something for the tail section (top of the duck tail)
Dan, I'll check tomorrow....we did talk about the importance of protecting the tail piece.
They need some clarification on their web site as to what the tank kit contains....
Did they ever get the ones for the tail piece cut?
