Title: abs cement
Post by: chiz on September 02, 2013, 08:37:05 PM
Hi
Probably well known but like my ST1100 abs black pipe cement also bonds the plastic on my 84 FJ.I just grind and back it up with JB on the backside. The front fender is off and shows lots of cracks and broken bits.

Also you can use a Plastic Epoxy glue manufactured by Loctite (available at your local Wally World and most box stores). Another product that has a lot of strength when if left set up for 24 hours is Weld-On #16. JB Weld is good stuff but will not "melt" or chemically bond into the ABS.
With the Weld-On #16 it is very important to let it set for 24 hr's. I also have found some cheap small spring clamps (Harbor Freight items) handy to have around for holding things together.  :good2:  The local plastic supplier gives me small scraps/mill end of ABS sheets about 1/8 thick that I keep around for backing material or making parts.  :bye2:

George,
When using ABS cement, did you mix 50/50 abs scarp plastic and cement? And cure for 24? I recall you described med the procedure once, but i've seem to have deleted the PM  :pardon:

Yes I have made the "goo". I don't remember that it was 50/50, I just put a bunch of it in a sealable bottle with the ABS cement. Just makes a thick paste. It takes about a day for it to liquefy the solids into a paste form.  Just one of many ways to fill holes in ABS.  :good2:

Thanks George...

I'm stocking up a lot of supplies this days to prepare for the winter and moditus time... Thank God RPM is open year round  :good2:
The biggest project is fixing all them cracks and broken fairing pieces before new paints get applied... (all though i do have a new fiberglass fairing too, but hey, who cares :-)

Cheers
