Have just bought a 93 FJ1200 ABS, pick it up next weekend, it's standard with 49K on the clock, I'm keen to start upgrading it, rather like the one in a UK magazine , FZR 1000 front and back end, any advice would be great, don't know how many spares will be readily available in NZ, but mad keen to get back into it !!

Hi Steve,
Speaking from experience, if you're looking for actual FJ parts, any conversations with wreckers or spare parts guys will end up in a burst of hysterical laughter and them hanging up the phone. There's just not enough FJ's here.
However, salvation is at hand. Look in the mods section, on this site there ate how-to's for any mod you can think of, so if you find the donor parts from other bikes then do it.
Also, Randy at www.rpmracingca.com (http://www.rpmracingca.com) is the man for any FJ specific parts you need and myself and 99% of other users here will highly recommend him. He's awesome.
Its a Kiwi renaissance on here this week, that's 2 new Kiwi's so far! Look out you bloody Stralyns we're catching up.. :blum1:

Welcome Steve, all my upgrades included parts from other (non FJ) bikes, 92' GSXR 750 17" rear wheel, 88' FZR1000 front wheel. Oh, my forks are 89' FJ and I put the RPM valves in them, but there are other fork options. My rear shock will be an RPM shock. Use the search function for a wealth of addicting information, we call it Moditus. Some upgrades will require you lose the ABS, so if it is still working and you want to keep it then you will have that limitation. Still plenty of good stuff you can do.
Welcome Steve. You are in the right place here. Lots of FJ's around the world and lots of parts, idea's, help and opinions. :good2: Any older bike will at times present challenges but you have a lot of options with the FJ and lots of suppliers of parts new and used if you dig around.
Randy at RPM http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=39 (http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=39) is a member here and highly recommended. He can get factory Yamaha parts also. He is an FJ rider and knows FJ's.
Sites with parts break down and part numbers: (there are many more)
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1993/parts.html (http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1993/parts.html)
http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/1993-yamaha-fj1200aec.html (http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/1993-yamaha-fj1200aec.html)
And there is e bay. Handy for modification's.
Try to get a Yamaha factory copy of a service manual. It contains a wealth of information. Some of the aftermarket manuals are good but seem to contain a few errors and a bit incomplete at times. If you do your own service work don't hesitate to ask questions first. It's a lot cheaper and easier to ask how to do something before you get into it.
I also recommend that you scan / read the old forum postings (will take you a few nights) there is a wealth of information there.
Cheers George
Welcome to the group. :hi: More and more parts are becoming unavailable from Yamaha. Randy @ RPM is a great source for OEM parts and custom designed parts. Also eBay is a great source. Plus there are members here that have caught the disease of Moditus. A byproduct of this disease is many spare parts that may be had at a much reduced cost than from the dealer or eBay.
Fred
Welcome Steve, if you are already talking about mods before you even picked up the bike you have Moditus. Sorry to give you the news.

Thanks for the replies, Well I've got it home and i'm starting to think about the strip / rebuild, the ABS will go with a different rear wheel, I would prefer a 4into 1 The tank and body work will need adressing (I'd like it coloured like the standard white / grey / red, white wheels................................................as I said thats what i'd like but lets just get started :yahoo: :yahoo:
