Just registered as a new user to the forum. I live on the Mornington Peninsula. Examine Crime Scenes for a living. I have nearly got my 92 FJ1200 on the road. Still in the same configuration as it's previous life as a West Aust Police Bike (minus the cop stuff). It was sitting in the previous owners garage for the last 9 years or so. Great site. I have learned lots already from previous posts.
G'day mate,
what kind of police parts did it have?
does it look the same as a regular non police fj ?
welcome to the barbie :-)
Kookaloo!
Frank

It wasn't me! Best to use a revolver these days or make sure you collect your casings - or so I've heard! ;)
I don't think we have ever had an actual owner of one of the Police FJs as a member of any of our groups. Cool! I've seen a couple of low resolution pics of the AUS Police FJs and one from South America as well. I do remember the fairing was shaped differently. Other than that I have NO IDEA what any of the differences are - but I would LOVE to know! Please post up some pics of your FJ in the Gallery section when you have a chance for all of us to enjoy! Welcome!
Hello Frank.
Still has the police digital speedometer above the speedo, a radio box over the pillion seat. Faring has been manufactured. Has police siren or radio controls on the right side of handle bars incorporated with starter and kill switch. Looks identical to this picture:

Last person to ride it 9 years ago claimed to have got it up to 200KPH. Won't go anywhere near that speed with me onboard. I ride like an old tart.

We have big white BMW solos here in Victoria. White helmets and fluro bike jackets. I don't know if an old fat bloke in a black helmet and dri rider will have the same effect of traffic. I plan to ride this to work regularly so I will however have the same blue uniform on beneath my jacket.
If you put a black "PENSKE" sticker above the front headlight it looks like "POLICE" at first glance. We have guys here in southern California who ride the current BMW decommissioned police bikes with amber bulbs/lenses in place of the blue and red. They purposefully keep the bikes looking as police as possible and get the proper white helmets, etc. I have run into a group of them a couple of times on the Ortega Hwy (Hwy 74) here in SoCal - they scare the shit out of you every time...
More - bigger - photos please!
I will post some photos soon. I think I will remain anonymous on the old police bike. Being mistaken for a police bike can sometimes attract the wrong kind of people. The sort that may not be as friendly and who may want to pay me back for all the wrongs done to them by the cops.
ANONYMITY IS GOOD. A CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY WOULD BE BETTER.
A CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY WOULD BE BETTER
I beg to differ, being invisible on a bike is deadly, in my honest opinion. Its the cagers that always say "I didn't see him, he came out of nowhere". Be as visible as possible. If being visible causes a problem where you live, then I would consider a different mode of transportation that keeps the target off your back. I ride as if the cagers cannot see me and do my best to chose positions out of blind spots and offer as many options for corrective maneuvers as possible. Hell, I don't even commute to work anymore on the bike. Perhaps you meant that being seen as law enforcement was the challenge. Maybe you can get that cloak of invisibility to come with a cloak of invulnerability. Might as well dream big.... :unknown:
Hi there WRINKLY12...... I saw one of the old police FJs up for sale on ebay a few months ago......yours?
Harvy
Sunshine Coast Qld.
Make no mistake, I ride like everyone is out to get me. Always got the headlights on, also pick my place on the road whenever possible.
Just threw the cloak bit in as it might be fun not to be seen.( but not on a bike though). With over 20 years in the job I have seen what happens when cars and bikes come together. Cars usually win.
Got my FJ from a freind who was planning to do it up. Had both legs broken in an industrial accident a while back and sold it to me.
$800.00 and I have spent about $1800 so far. new tank (Old one rusted out) new screen coming, chain sporickets etc etc... I thought haveing a sailboat was expensive. Yamaha Love me and the children's inheritance....... What inheritance!

Wrinkly12,
Hello and welcome :hi:
With a boats you have two best days, the day you buy and the day you sell it. With the FJ's you only have one best day, the day you buy it.
Later...... :bye2:
I must admit it was a good day to see someone hook up and tow the boat away. I now have more room in my driveway.

I read on one of the lists that a
POLITE sticker works well on ex-police bikes.

Hello, wrinkly12, and welcome!
Gooday wrinkly, welcome, have fun with your new project, it would be interesting to see.
I come from Vic (Mt Dandenong) but now live in Tassie.

Had a bit of a hiccup today. I had the engine checked and a roadworthy test done. Earlier I took my wheels to another dealer and had two new tyres fitted. Unfortunately they fitted two different speed rated tyres which I am now informed will not pass roadworthy. Anyway getting a new front tyre and hopefully returning the other front tyre to the the other dealer for a refund. Otherwise all is good.
what breed of tyre are you using?
DUNLOP GT501. 120/70H17 on front and Rear was: USA 'V'. You would think a dealer would know not to put two different rated tyres on. In their defense I did just drop the wheels off for fitting.

Without being pedantic,is the bike ''92 and the fairing for an "86 "police issue/variation given the square base on the screen .just curious.
rossco (long time VB drinker)
Happy to be proved wrong,I'm used to it.

A mate of mine who I ride with in Sydney has an ex police ST1100 and people do react when they see it, he rides daily to and from work and reckons he gets said reaction at least twice a week.
As he does not log on to this forum I can say he is "an old fat bloke in a black helmet and dri rider" so you may be in luck :hi:
On the old police bikes, my mate has a std ST1100 and the ex police one, the police one has well thought out handle bar risers and lay out, heaps of additonal switches which he is using for other electrical equipment and a double the std rating alternator, so he is very happy, he is now using the std one for spares.
Had the FJ out on the road over the weekend and last couple of days. Pretty happy with it so far. Yes people do hesitate to overtake when they approach from behind.
I think I need to have the carbs tuned as I did 70km tonight and used a 1/4 of a tank of fuel. Carbs also leaking onto the garage floor when parked there. Intermittent problem at this stage.
Sorry ROSCO.
I don't know where the faring came from. Eagle Screens in West Aust replaced my screen and it was described as FJ 1200 police on their website. The faring is made of fibreglass with white gelcoat on outside.
Could be made by that mob in SA(if they're still going?),good luck with the carbs
